Straight Cheese Streaming Pitchers Week 10 – Caleb Smith, Skaggs, Heaney

June 7, 2018 By Chris Spencer Leave a Comment

Tyler Skaggs, Los Angeles Angels

Chris’ Stream-O-Matic 2000 is heating up as he on a nice two-week run of solid streaming pitcher results. For Week 10 he checks in with three pitchers, two from the LA Angels including Tyler Skaggs.

Straight Cheese, an exercise identifying less than desirable, questionably talented, low-owned pitchers that you can use for a spot start for your fantasy baseball team. These are streaming pitchers Week 10.

First, lets take a look back at my picks from last week.

Week 9 Review

Name Date GS IP ER H BB K Dec ERA WHIP
Wade LeBlanc 5/31 vs. TEX 1 5.00 1 4 2 4 W 1.80 1.20
Jordan Lyles 5/31 vs. MIA 1 7.00 2 6 1 7 W 2.57 1.00
Tyler Skaggs 6/3 vs. TEX 1 6.00 0 4 3 6 W 0.00 1.17
Kyle Gibson 6/3 vs. CLE 1 5.67 2 2 2 7 - 3.17 0.71
Total for Week   4 23.67 5 16 8 24 3-0 1.90 1.01
Running Total   33 185.00 84 171 62 179 12-9 4.09 1.26

Not as good as the previous week, but I’ll gladly take it. Each and every game means more data, and with more data comes more confidence in the Stream-O-Matic 2000. The downside of having more confidence in my process means that I am less willing to “reach” for pitchers to stream. In fact, this week I only have three recommendations for you, my loyal readers.

With that out of the way, let’s swipe right on these pitcher’s profiles!

Streaming Pitchers Week 10

The pitchers are listed in order of appearance as of Wednesday morning. Ownership info from Yahoo! (Y) and ESPN (E) and all 2018 stats are through Tuesday, June 5th.

LHP Caleb Smith, MIA
Owned Y39%/E31% · vs. San Diego Padres – Friday, June 8th

First things first, the Marlins may suck but this guy is good. Through 12 starts he has a 4.03 era, 1.19 whip and 74 strikeouts in 60 1/3 innings (29.6 k%). He got shelled in his last outing in Arizona (5 earned runs in 4 innings) but don’t let that scare you. He’ll get the Padres at home where he excels. In home games he has a 3.51 era, 1.21 whip and 33 strikeouts in 25 2/3 innings (31.1 k%).

San Diego comes into the matchup with a 0.276 wOBA (26th), 0.171 iso (10th) and striking out 28.2% of the time (worst in MLB) vs. LHP on the road. At first the iso looks worrisome but Caleb is currently holding batters to 0.140 iso when he pitchers at home. He’s in a great matchup that we all can take advantage of.

LHP Tyler Skaggs, LAA
Owned Y49%/E44% · @ Minnesota Twins – Saturday, June 9th

That’s right! I’m rolling with Skaggs again this week. Through 12 starts he has a 3.27 era, 1.27 whip and 70 strikeouts in 66 innings (25.1 k%). His numbers are even better when you look at his road splits: 2.94 era, 1.16 whip and 33 strikeouts in 33 2/3 innings (only 23.2%). He’s good and the argument could be made that he should be owned in more leagues.

The Twins are currently putting up a 0.299 wOBA (19th), 0.103 iso (28th) and striking out 26.8% of the time (29th) vs. LHP at home. In fact, playing around with the splits leaderboard over at FanGraphs I see that Minnesota in the first 5 innings vs. LHP at home have 120 plate appearances, 0 homeruns, 0 triples, 5 doubles, 0.243 wOBA, 0.046 iso and 22.5 k%. If you look up the word “inept” in the dictionary, it says, “See Minnesota Twins vs. LHP at home in 2018.”

LHP Andrew Heaney, LAA
Owned Y44%/E32% · @ Minnesota Twins – Sunday, June 10th

You just read about how bad the Twins are vs. LHP at home. Well, Heaney is a southpaw, too. Through 10 starts he has a 3.12 era, 1.10 whip and 58 strikeouts in 60 2/3 innings (23.6 k%). Heaney isn’t as skilled on the road as Skaggs: 4.43 era, 1.43 whip and 20 strikeouts in 22 1/3 innings (20.4 k%). But, he is holding batters to a 0.108 iso and hasn’t allowed a homerun on the road yet in 2018.

Let’s hope history doesn’t repeat itself. Back in April I recommended streaming Heaney when he faced off against the Giants. Things did not go well. He served up 3 homeruns in that game… out of only 4 he’s allowed all season! I’m saying roll him out there again this weekend. He wouldn’t do me wrong again… Would he?

Remember, these suggestions aren’t ludicrous. They’re @Roto_Chris.

Straight Cheese Week 9 Streaming Pitchers – Skaggs, Gibson, LeBlanc

May 31, 2018 By Chris Spencer 2 Comments

Seattle Mariners Wade LeBlanc

Chris wouldn’t think of rostering Wade LeBlanc under normal circumstances, but facing the Texas Rangers provides the right circumstances to include LeBlanc in his week 9 streaming pitchers.

Straight Cheese, an exercise identifying less than desirable, questionably talented, low-owned pitchers that you can use for a spot start for your fantasy baseball team. These are week 9 streaming pitchers.

First, lets take a look back at my picks from last week.

Week 8 Review

Name Date GS IP ER H BB K Dec ERA WHIP
Ross Stripling 5/25 vs. SDP 1 6.67 0 6 0 10 W 0.00 0.90
Daniel Mengden 5/26 vs. ARI 1 9.00 0 2 0 5 W 0.00 0.22
Marco Gonzalez 5/28 vs. TEX 1 6.67 0 4 4 4 W 0.00 1.20
Week 8 Total   3 22.33 0 12 4 19 3-0 0.00 0.72
Season Total   29 161.33 79 155 54 155 9-9 4.41 1.30

Well, like the new Han Solo movie, that went better than I anticipated. Cahill’s start was pushed to Monday vs. the Rays but I wouldn’t have recommended him since they actually do alright vs. RHP on the road. Didn’t matter as he went out and tossed 8 scoreless innings; striking out 6 and only giving up 4 hits with no walks. The only real blemish from last week was falling further under my self-imposed strikeout per inning goal.

With that out of the way, let’s check all our jean pockets looking for a few dollars!!!

Week 9 Streaming Pitchers

The pitchers are listed in order of appearance as of Wednesday morning. Ownership info from Yahoo! (Y) and ESPN (E) and all 2018 stats are through Tuesday, May 29th.

LHP Wade LeBlanc, SEA
Owned Y11%/E7% · vs. Texas Rangers – Thursday, May 31st

Recommending LeBlanc is more about pointing out just how bad the Rangers are vs. LHP on the road. Through Tuesday in that situation they are putting up a 0.250 wOBA (worst in MLB), 0.124 iso (25th) and striking out 28.8% of the time (worst in MLB).

Let me make it clear. I wouldn’t think of rostering Wade LeBlanc under normal circumstances. His 2.70 era and 1.10 whip are an illusion. His 4.38 xFIP, 0.277 babip and 83.8 lob% are all signs telling the buyer to beware. Stuff like this could be overlooked if he was striking batters out… but he isn’t (19.1 k%). The Rangers are the perfect team to stream an otherwise unattractive pitcher against.

RHP Jordan Lyles, SD
Owned Y16%/E8% · vs. Miami Marlins – Thursday, May 31st

Much like LeBlanc, Jordan Lyles is a middling starter finding himself in an advantageous situation this week. I’ve picked on the Marlins numerous times in this column and for good reason. They struggle on the road and especially against righties. Currently vs. RHP on the road they have a 0.272 wOBA (29th), 0.119 iso (worst in MLB) and 25.7 k% (26th).

Lyles currently has an overall 3.83 era, 1.16 whip and 40 strikeouts in 42 1/3 innings. I like him better since joining the rotation recently. In his 4 starts he has a 3.90 xFIP and 25.5 k%. As a reliever he has a 4.84 xFIP and 20.0 k%. I look for him to continue putting up good, usable numbers against the Marlins.

LHP Tyler Skaggs, LAA
Owned Y51%/E47% · vs. Texas Rangers – Sunday, June 3rd

Take everything I said earlier about how bad the Rangers are on the road vs. LHP and add it to how well Skaggs is pitching and you have news you can use. Through 11 starts, Tyler has a 3.60 era, 1.28 whip and 64 strikeouts in 60 innings. I’m not going to waste any more of your time on this one.

Unlike Rizzo’s slide, there is no debate here. Roll Skaggs out there confidently.

RHP Kyle Gibson, MIN
Owned Y18%/E20% · vs. Cleveland Indians – Sunday, June 3rd

It might be time to take a look at what Gibson is doing and graduate him from streaming. Through 11 starts he has a 3.57 era, 1.25 whip and 66 strikeouts in 63 innings. He’s striking out batters at a 24.8% clip while also holding them to a 0.290 wOBA and 0.132 iso.

The Indians are awful on the road. They are averaging a full TWO RUNS less in road games than home games (most in MLB). In fact their 5.93 runs per game at home is 2nd in MLB while their 3.88 runs per game on the road ranks 23rd in MLB. What’s even better for Gibson (and for us) is that on the road vs. RHP they have a 0.280 wOBA (25th), 0.160 iso (15th) and 25.3 k% (23rd). The stars are aligned for Gibson this weekend. Take advantage.

Remember, these suggestions aren’t ludicrous. They’re @Roto_Chris [Editor’s Note: Oy 🙄]

Fantasy Baseball 2013 Consensus Top Prospects

March 19, 2013 By Rick Leave a Comment

One of my favorite tasks prepping for the upcoming fantasy baseball season is compiling my consensus top prospects list, a ranking of the next best players in baseball. This is the fourth year publishing the list. Feel free to go back and check the top prospects from 2010, 2011 and 2012, and you’ll quickly see what a major impact these players have on the fantasy baseball landscape today. The top of this list are the guys you want to build your deep keeper and dynasty league fantasy baseball teams around for years to come.

This year I used 14 publicly available “top 100” prospect lists to form the basis of my list, although there were changes to the lists included in the consensus from last year. Players had to be named on at least seven of the lists to make the final cut. Players were given 100 points for a 1st place listing, 99 points for second, 98 for third and on and on down to 1 point for a selection as number 100.

Each list that formed the consensus is identified in the key below. Each player’s score for that list is indicated and their average is listed last. Scores are based on the number of lists they appear. I realize this simple system has the potential to skew the results of those picked on fewer lists, but overall it provides a good snapshot of the guys you should target for your rosters.
