Three starting pitchers are likely to be headed to the bullpen in the near future. They all have had success as relievers and are going to lose a lot of value if their teams make the move, so dangle them in trade offers and see if you can get full value for them before you lose that value.
Joba Chamberlain has struggled this season and is more likely to be the long term fixture in the 2009 Yankees bullpen than Phil Hughes. If Chien-Ming Wang can stay healthy, the Yanks will need to make a decision about the odd man out and Chamberlain’s struggles make him the obvious choice.
The Athletics are likely to put Justin Duchscherer in the bullpen when he returns from the disabled list. Duchscherer has had trouble staying healthy as a starter and this will allow the A’s to likely get more innings out of him.
The Los Angeles Angels have to decide who stays in their rotation and who goes to the minors or the bullpen as a result of several starting pitchers getting healthy. Kelvim Escobar has had success as a closer, so relieving is a comfort zone for him.
Of course your league rules and keeper potential will weigh heavily in your decision about moving these three, but investigation of their value within your league is well worth the time.
