Have we posted a Mike Trout image this fantasy baseball season yet? No? Corrected!
Fantasy baseball is a lot more complex than fantasy football. Fantasy football almost exclusively scores players using fantasy points. Fantasy baseball uses fantasy points, but also roto or category scoring. Roto is probably more popular, although I’m not completely confident it is even though it dominates analyst discussions.
With respect to traditional season-long fantasy leagues, football is weekly. With the exception of the occasional bye week, every team plays once a week – simple. Baseball is daily or weekly. Weekly fantasy baseball could include periods with different start and finish days, and some periods could be merged, like over the MLB All-Star Game.
Fantasy playoffs? Mostly yes for football, Weeks 14-16 of the NFL season is pretty standard. For baseball, maybe yes, maybe no. It seems a lot of leagues do not have playoffs and instead grind out total points for the full season to declare a champion.
Some fantasy baseball leagues use a head-to-head schedule, like our Draft Buddy H2H Fantasy Points league, and then incorporate playoffs. How many teams qualify and what periods to use late in the season, when MLB rosters are in a lot of flux for called up minor leaguers I might add, there is no standard.
Who Do I Start Advice
What is my point in all of this? I thought it would be great if we could provide regular advice about players with good and bad matchups to help decide whether you should start them or bench them. That also dovetails nicely into add-drop advice, if players are identified as possible good starts going forward and available free agents in your league.
So I am going to attempt that, and I’ve got some ideas that still need to be worked out, but understand no matter what there will be some limitations. Baseball is complex, and the available player pool is very deep. Mad props to the guys who spend so much time analysing and writing about fantasy baseball for the masses on a full-time basis. It’s a lot of work.
Chris is bringing back his streaming starting pitchers column, Straight Cheese, which will be of immense help to him and I in our NFBC league (thank you Luis Severino). Between that, and whatever I can cobble together (weekly column? new site features?), hopefully we can be a contributing factor in your 2019 fantasy baseball success.
Fantasy Baseball Week 1
MLB Opening Day is upon us! In one of my leagues we include stats from the March 20-21 Oakland Athletics-Seattle Mariners games played in Japan, and in another, they are not included. And then there are a variety of bestball leagues that I won’t bore you with the details. In actively managed leagues with weekly lineup submissions, the deadline is start of the games on Opening Day. The week (or period) concludes on Sunday in the NFBC league, and the other extends to the following Sunday for an extra-long Week 1 (period 1).
Even though a pretty short period of four days, the NFBC league is probably more common. Then we get into a routine of submitting free agent bids and setting lineups for the week from Monday to Sunday. For this first short period, we pretty much want to start the guys higher on our draft boards, except for those who are out due to injuries or were sent down to the minors. Unfortunately, there are a few key injuries already.
Lets run through the hitter positions using the season ADP, the projected matchups, and identify points of interest for some players that could impact their performance in the short-term.
Below are the Top 24 eligible 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, C, Top 60 OF and handful of DH only UT-eligible, based on NFBC ADP at the time of our last Draft Buddy update. Pete Alonso – I thought this was already decided but MLB Trade Rumors posted not long ago the New York Mets are including Pete Alonso on the opening day roster. Maybe I thought this was a done deal after receiving a trade offer yesterday (and not the first) for Alonso. Not yet Matt!

Francisco Lindor – Even though he is playing minor league games and reports of his calf injury recovery are positive, it looks like Lindor will start the season on the IL, so bench him for now.
Fernando Tatis, Jr. – The Padres with a small surprise to the delight of many fantasy baseball owners this morning, Tatis made the opening day roster and will likely start at shortstop while Luis Urias does not. Having never played AAA we should temper expectations a bit, but this is a play’em if you got’em situation.
Jorge Polanco – Reading Polanco is questionable to start Opening Day because of a tired arm. If he can’t play the field and is blocked from the DH spot by Nelson Cruz, that poses a problem. Something to monitor Polanco owners.
Carlos Correa – What is with all the shortstops with question marks? Correa, also questionable to start the season due to neck stiffness.
