MLB Daily Fantasy Lineups to Stack / Avoid, Tuesday June 12

June 12, 2018 By kopasetic 1 Comment

Stream-O-Matic 2000

A peak at Chris’ Stream-O-Matic 2000 that he uses to write his weekly Straight Cheese streaming article, and identify MLB lineups to stack or avoid for daily fantasy baseball.

Stack #1
Rangers
·
Stack #2
Angels
·
Stack #3
Phillies

Stacking is a well-known daily fantasy sports strategy. In an effort to identify stack worthy lineups I’ve been tinkering with the idea of looking at the opposing pitcher’s DFS points allowed. Similar to in fantasy football looking at the opposing defense’s fantasy points allowed to running backs to determine which one to start.

My approach is to look at a team’s DFS points per plate appearance and compare to the opposing pitcher’s DFS points per plate appearance. A “bad” pitcher could lead to an increase in production from the hitters and conversely, a “good” pitcher could lead to a decrease in production. It is important to note that due to the volatility of stolen bases, I do not include them when calculating ppa.

How to Read the Charts
The Rangers are facing a LHP on road and in that situation they are currently putting up 1.67 FanDuel and 1.30 DraftKings points per plate appearance or ppa. The opposing pitcher is Caleb Ferguson (Dodgers) and he is currently allowing 194% more ppa in FanDuel and 170% more ppa in DraftKings than the current MLB average (2.10 on FanDuel and 1.60 on DraftKings). The modified ppa is simply 1.67 x 194% in FanDuel and 1.30 x 170% in DraftKings.

  • Kole Calhoun to Undergo Knee Surgery Wednesday Show More

Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Kole Calhoun will undergo surgery on his right knee on Wednesday morning according to The Arizona Republic's Nick Piecoro. Piecoro reports that Calhoun will be undergoing a "right knee medial meniscectomy" and there is currently no information on a timetable for Calhoun's return. Calhoun posted career-highs with a .526 slugging percentage and 12.3 percent walk rate over 54 games in 2020, but it appears likely now he will open the season on the injured list. The Diamondbacks have several players who will have a shot at increased playing time following this injury, with Daulton Varsho likely being the player with the best shot at playing time and fantasy relevancy.

  • Rockies Don't Have The Budget To Extend Trevor Story Show More

Colorado Rockies shortstop Trevor Story, who can become a free agent after the 2021 season, is unlikely to re-re-sign with the team, per Jon Heyman of MLB Network. Heyman stated earlier that the Rockies are "said not to have the budget for any big signing at the moment, so barring some big change there won't be an extension coming anytime soon for superstar SS Trevor Story." The writing has been on the wall for some time, as the Rockies haven't even opened discussions about an extension with the All-Star shortstop. Colorado already traded third baseman Nolan Arenado to the Cardinals during the offseason and look to be heading into full-on rebuild mode. This recent bit of news increases the probability of a midseason trade, which could hamper Story's fantasy value. He should still play the first half of the year at Coors Field, though, so this recent bit of news shouldn't prevent you from taking him at his second-round ADP.

  • Matt Barnes, Adam Ottavino The Top Closing Candidates Show More

Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora admitted that his thoughts on closing out games has shifted to a more traditional approach from what it was a few years ago. Relievers Matt Barnes and Adam Ottavino are the top candidates to serve as the closer, and Cora would like to have a set closer by Opening Day. It's Barnes' job to lose after he had a 4.30 ERA and 1.39 WHIP with nine saves during the shortened 2020 season. But the right-hander will need to cut down on the walks -- he's had over a 13 percent walk rate the last two seasons -- if he wants to keep the job all year. Darwinzon Hernandez and Hirokazu Sawamura could also be options to pitch in the ninth inning if Barnes struggles in the role. Because the Red Sox haven't officially named Barnes as the guy, he's a low-end closing option worth taking in the final rounds of your draft.

  • MacKenzie Gore Cleaning Up Mechanical Issues Show More

San Diego Padres pitching prospect MacKenzie Gore fanned three in a simulated game over the weekend, taking a positive step towards his impending big league debut. His first spring training start comes Thursday against the Texas Rangers. Despite myriad injuries to the rotation in 2020, the Friars top prospect arm did not receive a call-up. At the alternate site, the 22-year-old struggled with command and mechanical issues but shined on Saturday, flashing a high-90s heater with just one free pass across seven batters. With four rotation spots locked up and a versatile pitching corps, Gore is a longshot to muscle his way onto the roster. Whether he breaks camp with the Padres, baseball's No. 6 prospect retains tantalizing upside as a frontline start with four legitimate pitches. Fantasy-wise, Gore is a prized dynasty piece but is just a stash for rosters with deep benches in redraft formats.

  • Noah Syndergaard Remains On Track Show More

New York Mets pitching coach Jeremy Hefner stated on Sunday that starting pitcher Noah Syndergaard (elbow) remains on track for a June return. Syndergaard missed the entire 2020 season due to Tommy John surgery, following a poor 2019 campaign in which he led the league in earned runs with 94 and posted a career-worst 4.28 ERA. Given consistent positive reports in the early spring regarding his health status and return calendar, Syndergaard remains a low-risk, high reward option at his current 328 ADP. Wise managers who roster Syndergaard on their bench or injured list for first the two-plus months of the season could be greatly rewarded with solid ratios and strikeouts in the second half of the season.
