Fantasy Football News, Notes and Rankings Changes – Quarterbacks

August 16, 2017 By Mike Leave a Comment

Derek Carr

I might have Derek Carr ranked a little high but it sure seems like he is getting drafted at a good value based on two of my recent drafts – QB12 and QB13.

I should have done this from Day 1 when I published my 2017 fantasy football rankings, but with us now in the final month before the season starts, better late than never. Here are news and notes to explain changes to my rankings, so you have a little more insight into what I am thinking ranking players.

Starting from the bottom up, I adjusted the quarterback rankings including adding Christian Hackenberg, since he will likely start for the New York Jets at some point this season. I shifted the tiers so Tier 8 is at Rank #33, the start of the projected backups, which is slightly odd since the one exception is Tom Savage at #33, still the projected Week 1 starter for the Houston Texans.

Tier 7 shifted up to include Mike Glennon after he struggled badly in the Chicago Bears preseason opener. Tier 6 now only includes Jared Goff and Brian Hoyer – two guys with decent job security, pretty low expectations but some upside given their offensive coordinators, plus Goff got a nice boost to his receivers with the Sammy Watkins trade. I haven’t moved Goff up the rankings but I would consider him as a late backup option in best-ball leagues.

Tier 5 captured Tyrod Taylor and Blake Bortles, two I would consider to have less job security than the players above I originally had them grouped with. Both may post good end of season numbers, but I still think it will be a bumpy ride along the way and I am not very interested in owning either of them this season.

Tier 4 moved up to split Marcus Mariota and Philip Rivers (Tier 3) from Dak Prescott and Eli Manning. That is mostly based on upside. I would pay a fair price for Mariota or Rivers if I waited that long for my starting QB. For Prescott and Manning I would expect to get them a little cheaper in the draft. Fair to say I would much rather have a Tier 3 and above starting QB than Tier 4 and below.

I moved Jameis Winston to #6 ahead of Cam Newton because Cam still isn’t making deep throws in practice, causing mild concern. Cam’s ADP is dropping as a result. Speaking of ADP, I still don’t see much caution by fantasy players drafting Andrew Luck. Go ahead and thank you! I like the guy but the risk is outweighing the reward given his current circumstances. His receivers as a group aren’t even that good until Donte Moncrief proves himself more.

Added the “target” icon to Russell Wilson as I am feeling more comfortable with him as an above average starter, and possibly more, at an acceptable draft cost. Derek Carr doesn’t move from my #4 spot for now but interesting to note I’ve drafted him in two straight drafts as QB13 (!) in the 10th round and QB12 at the top of the 11th round in another. Maybe I’ve got him a bit high since he offers up little to no rushing stats, but on a trending up team with two excellent receivers – assuming Amari Cooper is fully healthy and further progresses – I feel pretty confident in Carr.

Player notes were reviewed and many added for all significantly ranked players.

As for Draft Buddy, thanks for those of you who already purchased. I am working on a version 2.0 Draft Buddy for this season, which allows for an optional method of importing rankings directly, from various sources, as an alternative to the projections generated cheatsheets. This way you could for example import dynasty specific rankings to Draft Buddy.

I am close to finishing the new version yet at the same time one aspect really has me stumped as to why it isn’t working properly. Darn that Microsoft Excel, VBA and conditional formatting is all I will say about that for now, but hopefully I do figure this out so we can release the new version.

In other news I am participating in the annual Scott Fish Bowl (really big) fantasy football tournament. My picks are automatically added to my Twitter feed so you may have seen them there. It is a very unique league set up and scoring, making for some wildly different pick strategies and a lot of fun.

Feel free to start a conversation commenting on the rankings here, or on Facebook or Twitter. Thanks!

Fantasy Football Draft Buddy 2017 Released

June 13, 2017 By Draft Buddy Leave a Comment

Screen Shot 2017-06-02 at 2.51.52 PM

We are up and running for the 2017 fantasy football season! Early June is our normal release date, and we met that timetable with a soft launch last week.

Check the pages linked below for more info about our custom cheatsheet and draft tracking software, and take advantage of the early bird special right now to save $4 off the purchase price!

Overview Videos Screenshots Instructions Testimonials Purchase Download

The detailed player projections included by default in Draft Buddy are from FF Today. These include projections for 61 QB, 122 RB, 153 WR and 75 TE, so very deep at the offensive skill positions, plus every projected starting kicker, every team defense, and 120 DL, 140 LB and 150 DB on the individual defensive player side. Nice job Mike K. and Antonio!

One new feature added out of the gate is the option for average draft position (ADP) data from three different sources. We’ve used Fantasy Football Calculator in the past, it is still there, and we added MyFantasyLeague.com and FantasyPros ADP. MFL is from their 12-team public leagues, the popular MFL10s, and FantasyPros is a 12-team composite ADP from various online league management services.

In terms of additional new features, I am working to develop some Draft Buddy features online, which will make them more flexible and provide an improved user interface. These are still in development and testing phases, not ready to be released yet.

We already noticed two issues where Draft Buddy is behaving differently than it did last year in Office 365, so a new bug fix release should be available soon. For those who already purchased – thank you! – if you have any issues or notice anything not quite working the way you expect, then please let me know.

Here is to an awesome summer ahead including many a fantasy football draft, using Draft Buddy!

  • Texans Release Duke Johnson Show More

The Houston Texans released running back Duke Johnson on Friday, according to a source. Johnson was set to have a salary cap hit of more than $5 million, so the team will move on instead. After playing in all 16 games in his first season with Houston in 2019 while carrying the ball 83 times for 410 yards and two touchdowns -- he also caught 44 passes for 410 yards and three more scores -- Johnson played in only 11 games in 2020 and had 77 carries for 235 yards and a TD while adding 28 catches for 249 yards and another score. The 27-year-old spent four years in Cleveland before a trade sent him to Houston in 2019. The Texans could also decide to cut David Johnson after acquiring him from the Cardinals in the swap that included All-Pro wideout DeAndre Hopkins when former head coach Bill O'Brien was still calling the shots.

  • Russell Wilson Hasn't Demanded A Trade Show More

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson has not demanded a trade, according to his agent, Mark Rodgers. Wilson wants to stay in Seattle and has a no-trade clause, but if a trade were considered, the only teams he would play for would be the Dallas Cowboys, New Orleans Saints, Las Vegas Raiders or Chicago Bears. Another reason a trade is unlikely: Wilson has a pre-June 1 dead salary cap number of $39 million ($7 million in savings). He also carries a post-June 1 dead cap number of $13 million in 2021 ($19 million saved) and $26 million dead cap number in 2022. The 32-year-old has made the Pro Bowl in seven of his nine seasons in the NFL and was on pace to be the MVP in 2020 before Seattle's offense crumbled in the second half. Wilson is ultimately expected to remain with the Seahawks and mend his relationship with them, but it's not out of the realm of possibility that he's traded. He's likely to remain a top-tier QB1 no matter where he's playing in 2021.

Buddy Take There are enough reports floating around that Wilson very likely is disgruntled with his current situation, but end of the day, it seems very unlikely he'll be playing in another uniform next season.

  • Texans Still Unwilling To Talk Deshaun Watson Trade Show More

The Houston Texans remain unwilling to talk about quarterback Deshaun Watson with other teams, with some clubs resorting to leaving voicemails with their trade offers, according to sources. Watson spoke with head coach David Culley recently, but the two have yet to meet in person. The 25-year-old franchise signal-caller hasn't backed off his demands to be dealt, but the Texans aren't budging. This situation will continue to be the biggest offseason storyline as we head into the new league year next month. Even without All-Pro wideout DeAndre Hopkins as his top receiver in 2020, Watson finished as the No. 4 fantasy QB behind Josh Allen, Kyler Murray and Aaron Rodgers. He could land in a better situation if he's ultimately traded, but even if he stays in Houston, Watson will be a top-tier, dual-threat fantasy quarterback.

  • Derek Carr Likely To Stay, Marcus Mariota Likely Gone? Show More

It's looking more likely that Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Derek Carr will remain with the team in 2021, while backup Marcus Mariota has been the subject of trade calls. Mariota is due $10 million in the final year of his contract and would probably get a chance to return to a starting gig under center in the NFL if he is dealt to another team. The Raiders remain committed to Carr under head coach Jon Gruden, which is why it's unlikely that Mariota will remain with the black and silver. The 27-year-old Mariota looked really good in relief of an injured Carr against the division-rival Chargers late in the season and he still can make things happen with his legs, but he'd merely be a low-end QB2 if he's traded and winds up starting for another organization in 2021.
