  • Arthur Blank: Matt Ryan, Julio Jones Will Be With Falcons In 2021

Feb 4 · Pro Football Rumors Falcons Julio Jones Matt Ryan
  • Falcons Not Expected To Trade Matt Ryan, Julio Jones

The Atlanta Falcons are not expected to trade quarterback Matt Ryan this offseason, according to sources. "The Falcons have not had any trade conversations about Ryan or their star wide receiver Julio Jones. And every expectation is both players are going to be on the roster in 2021," NFL Network's Tom Pelissero said. New head coach Arthur Smith plans to run a similar offense to the one Kyle Shanahan used when Ryan won MVP in 2016. Atlanta would be on the hook for more than $44 million in dead money in 2021 if they traded Ryan before June 1. Atlanta may decide to take Ryan's heir-apparent at No. 4 overall in the draft, but the 35-year-old signal-caller is expected to stay put for at least another season. Ryan and Jones got it going to end the regular season and could be in line for bounce-back campaigns under Smith in 2021. Consider Ryan a midrange QB1 heading into next season.

  • Falcons Name Terry Fontenot As New General Manager

The Atlanta Falcons officially named Terry Fontenot as their new general manager on Tuesday. Fontenot spent the last 18 years of his career with the New Orleans Saints, most recently completing his first season as the team's vice president/assistant general manager for pro personnel. He initially got his foot in the door as a marketing intern with the Saints. New Orleans won Super Bowl XLIV in 2009 and has claimed seven NFC South titles in the last 15 years while Fontenot was around. Fontenot will now move to a Falcons team that has not been to the playoffs since 2017. He will be replacing Thomas Dimitroff, who was fired during the 2020 season. Fontenot will be working with new head coach Arthur Smith, with one of the main priorities being to figure out whether quarterback Matt Ryan and wide receiver Julio Jones are part of the organization's immediate future.

  • Arthur Smith Named New Falcons Head Coach

The Atlanta Falcons hired Tennessee Titans offensive coordinator Arthur Smith as their new head coach on Friday, according to sources. Smith was the team's top choice all along, so they get their man. The 38-year-old was one of seven coaching candidates for Atlanta after the team fired Dan Quinn on Oct. 11. Smith is expected to pair with New Orleans Saints assistant general manager/vice president of player personnel, who is expect to be Atlanta's next GM. Smith spent the last 10 seasons with the Titans but stood out the last two years as the team's offensive coordinator, helping the Titans reach the playoffs the last two seasons. Tennessee was the only team in the NFL that ranked in the top five in rushing yards per game (153.5) and passer rating (107) since 2019. He'll try to help an Atlanta team that went 4-12 in 2020 and that hasn't made the playoffs the last three years. Smith should be a good fit if quarterback Matt Ryan and veteran receiver Julio Jones stick around.

  • Matt Ryan, Julio Jones Not Off Limits Under Next GM

Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank said that none of the team's players will be off limits, including quarterback Matt Ryan and wide receiver Julio Jones, when the club hires a new general manager. "Who will come forward with a plan for us to have a championship team, a competitive team, et cetera. And that may include Matt and Julio for now, for the next two years, three years, or may not. I have no idea," Blank said. Ryan was the MVP in 2016 but will be looking for a bounce-back year in 2021 if he remains with the organization. Jones has been one of the top receivers in the NFL since he entered the league, but he was banged up for most of the 2020 season and Calvin Ridley is slowly emerging as the new No. 1 after gaining 1,374 yards in his third season.

  • Matt Ryan Throws For 265 Yards And Two Scores

Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan completed 29 of 44 passes for 265 yards and two touchdowns in a 44-27 loss to the Buccaneers. It's Ryan's third game in a row with at least 250 passing yards and two touchdowns. The loss puts the Falcons' final record at 4-12 as they head into an offseason of change. Ryan- who is under contract for the next three seasons- threw for 921 yards and seven touchdowns over his team's final three games. It remains to be seen whether the Falcons will select a quarterback in the draft, though it seems Ryan has enough arm left if they want him to play out the remainder of his contract. The 35-year-old signal-caller has finished as the QB14 or better in every season since 2009, a remarkable run of consistency. He offers no ability with his legs but should be a late-round value once again in 2021- even if his play slips a bit.

  • Matt Ryan In The Low-End QB1 Range Against Tampa Bay

Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan will take on the Buccaneers for the second time in the last three weeks. Ryan comes into the season finale having thrown for at least 300 yards and two touchdowns in each of his last two games- as he prepares to face the league's 22nd-ranked pass defense. Tampa Bay's defense has been inconsistent this year, though they've been able to generate pressure on opposing signal-callers. This makes Ryan a bit risky for DFS purposes- though he was able to produce 356 passing yards and three scores against this defense in Week 15. Ryan is in the low-end QB1 range this week.

  • Matt Ryan Tosses For 300 Yards

Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan finished 27-for-35 for 300 yards and two touchdowns in the loss to the Chiefs in Week 16. The QB has tossed for at least 300 yards in the past two games now and will face a Bucs squad that allows the 12th-most points to fantasy QBs in the season finale next week. As a result, Ryan is in the starting tier in the last week of the NFL season.

  • Matt Ryan A QB2 In Week 16

Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan is a QB2 this week against the Chiefs. Last week, the QB posted 356 yards and three touchdowns and has at least 220 yards passing in the last three games. This contest with the Chiefs could be a shootout, so Ryan is a fine QB2 against a team that is middle-of-the-pack against fantasy quarterbacks.

  • Matt Ryan Torches Buccaneers For 356 Yards And Three Scores

Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan completed 34 of 49 passes for 356 yards and three touchdowns in a 31-27 loss to the Buccaneers. Without his top receiver Julio Jones (hamstring), Ryan silenced the narrative that the offense can't thrive without the former, as he put together one of his better games of the season. The veteran signal-caller completed a pass to 11 different receivers, including touchdown passes to three different pass-catchers. Ryan may have Jones back in the lineup for a potential offensive battle with Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs in Week 16.

  • Matt Ryan Should Be Avoided In Week 15

Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan gets an easier matchup on paper against the Buccaneers in Week 15. Tampa Bay's defense was stout against the pass earlier in the year but has slipped up recently, as they've allowed the eighth-most passing yards in the last four weeks. Despite their recent vulnerabilities, Ryan is hard to trust from a fantasy standpoint right now. He's failed to exceed 250 passing yards in three of his last four games and has four touchdowns to six interceptions in that span. He'll also be without Julio Jones (hamstring), all of which will make Ryan an unappealing QB2 against Tampa Bay.

  • Matt Ryan Throws Three Picks

Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan finished 21-for-32 for 224 yards, one touchdown, and three interceptions in the Week 14 loss to the Chargers. This was by far one of the QB's worst performances of the season and he now has not thrown for over 300 yards in the past six games. In addition, he has four touchdowns and four interceptions in the past three games. Ryan is looking only like a fringe starter going forward given his decline in production and turnover struggles.

  • Matt Ryan A High QB2 In Week 14

Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan is a high-end QB2 this week against the Chargers. The veteran has had at least 220 passing yards in all but one game this season and continues to showcase his terrific talent. Though the numbers usually vary each week, Ryan has been very effective. Last week, he had 273 yards and one touchdown and now has as least 270 yards in three of the past five games. The Chargers allow the sixth-most points to fantasy QBs, making Ryan a solid start.

  • Matt Ryan Has Quiet Day In Loss To Saints

Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan completed 19 of 39 passes for 273 yards and one touchdown in a 21-16 loss to the Saints. Ryan got his favorite target back in Julio Jones but was unable to get much going until he salvaged his day with a late, fourth-quarter touchdown pass to Russell Gage. In Ryan's defense, the New Orleans defense is not what it was at the beginning of the season, as the unit has gotten healthier and more effective. The veteran signal-caller will get a good chance to redeem himself next week against a Chargers Defense that struggles against quarterbacks.
