  • Alex Smith Will Be On 53-Man Roster

The Washington Football Team plans to keep quarterback Alex Smith (leg) on their 53-man roster for the start of the regular season, according to sources. Smith has been battling to return to football for almost two full years after breaking his leg and dealing with multiple complications that almost cost him his leg. There remains plenty of uncertainty regarding Smith's health, and his place on the depth chart behind Dwayne Haskins remains to be seen. He's due $16 million fully guaranteed in 2020. While still recovering, Smith is expected to be a mentor for Haskins in his second season after he made seven starts and nine appearances in 2019 as a rookie.

  • Dwayne Haskins Embracing Competition With Alex Smith

Washington quarterback Dwayne Haskins has more competition in the QB room, but is embracing the return of Alex Smith and views it as an opportunity for both players to improve. Smith, who suffered a devastating leg injury in 2018, has been activated off the PUP list and has been clear for football activities. Smith has been a successful starter in this league so the leash will be shorter if Haskins struggles, but both QBs have said the right things about wanting to help each other and Smith was already helping mentor Hasking last season. The second-year QB will still have the first crack at the starting job and improved late last season with five touchdowns to one interception in his last five games. Haskins is a risky pick, but the former first-round pick has upside as a QB2.

  • Alex Smith Activated Off PUP List

The Washington Football Team has activated quarterback Alex Smith (leg) from the PUP list and he has been cleared for football activities. Smith suffered a gruesome injury in November 2018, fracturing multiple bones in his right leg. His first surgery on the leg led to him developing life-threatening necrotizing fasciitis, which in turn led to numerous additional surgeries and a lengthy recovery process. The fact that he's made it all the way back is simply remarkable. Dwayne Haskins and Kyle Allen figure to be the team's top two quarterbacks to enter the year, with Smith as the third-string signal caller.

  • Alex Smith Could Compete For Starting Job

At one point, it looked like Washington quarterback Alex Smith would never step onto a football field again after a devastating leg injury in 2018, but head coach Ron Rivera says that if Smith is healthy, he'll have a chance to compete for the starting job. That's bad news for second-year passer Dwayne Haskins, who struggled as a rookie. Haskins not winning the starting job this year would signal bad news for his future in Washington and could suggest that the team will be looking for a new quarterback in 2021, as Smith's not the long term answer at this point in his career. This is a quarterback room to avoid in re-draft leagues this season.
