Michael Mayer Collects Two Catches In Preseason Finale

Las Vegas Raiders tight end Michael Mayer had two first-quarter catches in Saturday's preseason matchup with the Cowboys, finishing with 20 receiving yards. Mayer has reportedly had a promising training camp and will look to contribute alongside fellow newcomer TE Austin Hooper for the Raiders this season. Temper expectations for Mayer to start the season, who should be drafted as a low-end TE2.

Offseason In Review: Las Vegas Raiders

The Raiders were unable to follow up their 2021 playoff berth with a .500 season, going 6-11 in Josh McDaniels‘ first year. This generated some faint one-and-done buzz for the polarizing coach. Mark Davis squashed those rumors early, but the second-chance HC faces pressure to make progress in Year 2. The former Patriots staple will […]

Las Vegas Raiders tight end Michael Mayer made his NFL preseason debut on Saturday night against the Rams, securing one catch on two targets for three yards. Mayer has reportedly had a promising training camp and will look to contribute alongside fellow newcomer TE Austin Hooper for the Raiders this season. Temper expectations for Mayer, who should be drafted as a low-end TE2 to start the season.

Michael Mayer Dealing With "Bumps and Bruises"

Las Vegas Raiders rookie tight end Michael Mayer missed Sunday and Wednesday's practices, but head coach Josh McDaniels said he was out because of normal "bumps and bruises" of camp. That said, there is no cause for concern as of now. The 22-year-old Notre Dame product will compete with Austin Hooper to be the primary pass-catching tight end for new Raiders quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. He could be worth stashing as a backup tight end in 12-team formats.

Michael Mayer Not Practicing Wednesday

Las Vegas Raiders tight end Michael Mayer (undisclosed) is not practicing on Wednesday, marking his second straight practice missed. The Raiders had two days off between the last time they hit the field, but there's no further information on Mayer's status yet. Hopefully, he's dealing with something minor and will get back on the field soon. The 22-year-old had a spectacular career at Notre Dame, catching 138 passes for 1,649 yards and 16 touchdowns over his final two collegiate seasons -- despite the team's offense struggling mightily during that span. With Darren Waller off of the team, Mayer will challenge Austin Hooper for the primary pass-catching tight end job in 2023. He could develop into a top target for Jimmy Garoppolo.

Michael Mayer Could Be Heavily Targeted In Rookie Season

The Las Vegas Raiders traded up to the No. 35 overall selection in this year's NFL draft to take rookie tight end Michael Mayer out of Notre Dame, and the odds are that Mayer is going to be a favorite target of quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo in his first NFL season now that Darren Waller is in New York. Mayer is a good route-runner, can get open, has reliable hands as a pass-catcher and can make defenders miss tackles. Despite being a rookie, he's also a great blocker, so Mayer is more of a complete tight end than Waller. The 22-year-old has an intriguing skill set, but Austin Hooper will also remain involved, and fantasy managers should temper expectations on Mayer's involvement in the passing attack in Year 1. For fantasy purposes, Mayer should go undrafted in standard-sized leagues.
