Raiders "Leaning" Toward Starting Aidan O'Connell
According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, the Raiders "are leaning" toward starting quarterback Aidan O'Connell on Sunday against the Los Angeles Chargers. Jimmy Garoppolo (head) didn't clear concussion protocol and was ruled out on Saturday. While veteran Brian Hoyer is on the roster and ready to take over under center, O'Connell may get a chance to make a name for himself in Week 4. That said, fantasy managers shouldn't feel comfortable starting the rookie. However, he could prove useful for those in deep, Superflex formats versus a struggling Chargers defense.

Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Aidan O'Connell could be in line for the start if starter Jimmy Garoppolo remains in the concussion protocol and can't play this weekend. Garoppolo was placed in the protocol following the Raiders loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday night and is still in the protocol on Friday. The Raiders rookie quarterback performed well in the preseason, passing for 482 yards and three touchdowns with a 69% completion percentage in three games. Preseason success is not always predictive of regular season success, but O'Connell may be the preferred start over veteran Brian Hoyer because of his potential. Raiders wide receiver Davante Adams shared praise of O'Connell to the media, stating that the rookie had opened a lot of eyes in the organization. Garoppolo has one more chance to clear the concussion protocol on Saturday to be eligible for Sunday's game, so more clarity on the situation should be available tomorrow. If Garoppolo does not clear the protocol, the starting job on Sunday will belong to O'Connell or Hoyer. O'Connell seems to have more upside against a Chargers team, which has been one of the easiest matchups for quarterbacks, but fantasy managers should look elsewhere for a streaming quarterback in Week 4.

Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Aidan O'Connell played the majority of Saturday's meaningless preseason matchup against the Dallas Cowboys as fellow QBs Jimmy Garoppolo and Brian Hoyer had the night off. The rookie completed 17-of-26 for 178 passing yards, with no touchdowns, interceptions, or sacks taken. O'Connell had an impressive first preseason with the Raiders, completing 43 of 62 passes for 482 yards, three touchdowns, and no interceptions in three games. He has done enough to make the Raiders as QB3 behind Brian Hoyer, although the down-field ability he showed this month could make him the more attractive replacement if starter Garoppolo were to go down. He is an upside pick in multi-quarterback dynasty leagues.

The rookie finished 15-of-18 passes for 141 yards and one touchdown, adding 7 yards on the ground to finish with a 117.8 quarterback rating during the team's 34-7 win against San Francisco. O'Connell showed poise and touch on Sunday, most notably on a few tight throws to fellow rookie TE Cole Fotheringham. If O'Connell continues his strong start to the Preseason he could turn a shaky-looking Las Vegas quarterback room into a slightly more interesting one.
