C.J. Stroud Impressing Coaches Early On

Houston Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans said that rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud has "done an excellent job" early on during organized team activities. It's good to see Stroud making a strong impression early on, but the Texans won't determine their starting signal-caller until training camp or after. Davis Mills saw the first repetitions at Tuesday's practice and is still technically fighting for the starting job in Week 1 of the regular season. The Texans also have veteran journeyman Case Keenum around. Stroud, the second overall pick in the draft, may not be the starter out of the gate in his rookie season, but he's fully expected to start the majority of Houston's games this year. The 21-year-old has plenty of long-term upside, but his fantasy value will most likely be limited in Year 1.

C.J. Stroud Running Second-Team Offense At OTAs

Houston Texans rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud is starting off with the second-team offense as the team begins OTAs. Third-year quarterback Davis Mills is getting all of the first-team reps thus far, but it's only a matter of time before Stroud gets the chance to work with the first-team offense after being selected No. 2 overall in the 2023 NFL Draft. There's no guarantee he'll start in Week 1, but it's almost a foregone conclusion he'll start early in his NFL career. Stroud will have limited fantasy upside in his rookie year with a pass-catching group of Nico Collins, Robert Woods, John Metchie, Tank Dell, and Dalton Schultz. That said, the team is early in the rebuilding process, so Stroud has plenty of time to develop.

Shaq Mason Agrees To Contract Extension With Houston

Offensive guard Shaq Mason has agreed to a three-year contract extension with the Texans. The deal is worth $36 million, with $22 million guaranteed. The 29-year-old landed in Houston from the Buccaneers in March, bolstering the team's offensive line for the 2023-24 campaign. Mason has plenty of experience under his belt, starting 115 games during his career. He is also a two-time Super Bowl champion, so his presence is good news for rookie signal-caller C.J. Stroud.

C.J. Stroud Asked Texans To Take Nathaniel Dell

Houston Texans rookie wide receiver Nathaniel Dell said that quarterback C.J. Stroud told the Texans front office after he was drafted with the second overall pick last Thursday night that he wanted the team to select Dell later in the draft. Stroud and Dell developed a relationship at the NFL scouting combine and will now be working together in their first NFL season. Dell is a bit undersized, but he was productive with 29 touchdowns at the University of Houston in his final two seasons, and he has a clear path to become the team's slot receiver in his first year at the next level. The 23-year-old could be worth a late-round flier in deeper fantasy leagues this fall, although both he and Stroud will certainly see their fair share of ups and downs in their rookie season.

Texans Select Ohio State QB C.J. Stroud With No. 2 Pick

The Texans sent out some smokescreens in recent weeks regarding their No. 2 selection, but the organization ultimately landed on the expected pick. With the second-overall pick, Houston has selected Ohio State QB C.J. Stroud. Expectations had grown recently that Houston – thought to be much higher on Bryce Young than any other passer – was considering […]
Apr 28 · Pro Football Rumors NFL Draft Texans C.J. StroudC.J. Stroud Taken Second By Houston In 2023 Draft

The Texans selected Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. The 21-year-old had a successful career as a Buckeye, appearing in 28 games and throwing for 7,775 yards, 81 touchdowns, and 12 picks. That said, Stroud is a talented passer, whether inside or outside the pocket. But he must improve under pressure, especially against bigger and faster professional football players. Nevertheless, with Houston in rebuilding mode, Stroud could struggle early. However, he has plenty of upside and is predicted to have a long, successful career in the National Football League.

Anything Possible With Texans At No. 2 Overall

It feels like anything is possible with the Houston Texans at No. 2 overall in the first round of this year's NFL draft on Thursday night. "No one knows what they are doing," an NFC executive said. Both the Texans and Arizona Cardinals at Nos. 2 and 3, respectively, are candidates to trade out, but it's hardly a slam dunk a deal will be there to be done. Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud would be hard to pass up, and Kentucky's Will Levis had a positive pre-draft meeting with Houston. But it also appears the Texans are open to taking a defensive player at No. 2, and multiple executives expect both Houston and Arizona to lean defense. If Houston goes defense, they'd likely take either Alabama's Will Anderson Jr. or Texas Tech's Tyree Wilson.

C.J. Stroud Could Slide In First Round

Alabama quarterback Bryce Young is the overwhelming favorite to go No. 1 overall to the Carolina Panthers in the first round of this year's NFL draft on Thursday night. But with the Houston Texans now expected to target one of the top edge rushers instead of a QB, Ohio State's C.J. Stroud could find himself without an early landing spot. The Detroit Lions (No. 6) and Las Vegas Raiders (No. 7) are expected to entertain the thought of drafting a QB if Stroud is there, but they might prefer an instant-impact pick on defense instead. "I think his slide could be similar to [Justin] Fields' and he went at 11," one league executive said. "There's no way [Stroud] gets past Tennessee at that spot. With [Ryan] Tannehill entering his last year of the deal, it makes sense."

Titans Have Lost Faith in Malik Willis

According to Sports Illustrated's Peter King, the Titans have "lost faith" in quarterback Malik Willis. King added there is talk Tennessee is interested in moving up to the No. 3 spot to acquire Ohio State signal-caller C.J. Stroud. However, the biggest takeaway is surrounding Willis, who appeared in only eight games since being selected in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft. The 23-year-old had a miserable rookie campaign, throwing for 276 yards and three interceptions while completing just 50.8% of his attempts. He also had 27 carries for 123 yards and a touchdown. At this rate, it certainly seems possible Willis may have already played his final snap for the Titans. But regardless of where he suits up this season, his fantasy value can't get much lower.

Titans Have Interest In C.J. Stroud, Will Levis

The Tennessee Titans are in the quarterback mix with the first round of this year's NFL draft quickly approaching on Thursday night. ESPN draft analyst Todd McShay has heard there is real interest in Ohio State's C.J. Stroud and Kentucky's Will Levis, with the latter being the more recent name. Tennessee has spoken to at least four different teams about a potential move up or down the board in the first round. There is a belief that they will target a player to move up for -- likely one of the QBs -- but then pivot to trade down if it doesn't work out. Any move down in the first round would likely keep them inside the top 20, and Tennessee QB Hendon Hooker would then become a possibility. Ryan Tannehill is turning 35 years old in 2023 and is in decline.

C.J. Stroud Could Fall To Lions At No. 6

The Detroit Lions could surprisingly be in the quarterback market in this year's draft, and it's unlikely that Ohio State QB C.J. Stroud would fall past the Lions at No. 6 overall if he falls out of the top-five picks on Thursday night. Stroud is a younger and cheaper version of Jared Goff with better physical traits. ESPN draft analyst Todd McShay hasn't heard Florida's Anthony Richardson connected to Detroit. If Stroud is gone, Alabama edge rusher Will Anderson Jr. and Texas Tech edge rusher Tyree Wilson would likely be the pick. But if they are also unavailable, Illinois cornerback Devon Witherspoon or Oregon cornerback Christian Gonzalez could be the Lions pick.

Seahawks Expected To Take Quarterback In First Round

ESPN draft analyst Todd McShay has a strong sense that the Seattle Seahawks won't leave Round 1 of this week's draft without a quarterback. McShay thinks Seattle could be targeting Ohio State's C.J. Stroud or Florida's Anthony Richardson at No. 5 overall, depending on who is still available. The idea is that either Stroud or Richardson could sit behind Geno Smith in the short term. If both players are gone, McShay thinks the Seahawks will go with either Alabama edge rusher Will Anderson Jr. or Texas Tech edge rusher Tyree Wilson. Multiple sources say that Georgia defensive tackle Jalen Carter isn't expected to be the pick. If Seattle doesn't take a QB at No. 5, they could go with Tennessee QB Hendon Hooker at No. 20 overall.

Texans To Pass On C.J. Stroud At No. 2 Overall?

ESPN draft analyst Todd McShay keeps hearing from people around the league that the Houston Texans will not take Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud at No. 2 overall this Thursday night. It really sounds like the Texans will pass on the quarterbacks, which goes against everything we've thought for months leading up to the NFL draft. If that's the case, Houston could trade back, and the Colts (No. 4) and Texans (No. 11) are both intrigued by the top QBs in this year's class. The Texans also have the No. 12 overall selection in the first round. Some sources are convinced they'll take Alabama edge rusher Will Anderson Jr. if they stay put at No. 2. Texas Tech edge rusher Tyree Wilson is also connected to the Texans with this pick.

Multiple reports have connected the Colts to Kentucky quarterback Will Levis, and the organization is still very interested in the prospect. However, things could get tricky if Ohio State’s C.J. Apr 22 · Pro Football Rumors NFL Draft Colts Will Levis Anthony Richardson C.J. Stroud Bryce YoungCardinals Expected To Field Offers For No. 3 Pick

The 2023 NFL Draft is approaching, and the Cardinals have the No. 3 overall pick. With a loaded quarterback class, there's speculation multiple clubs searching for a young up-and-coming passer will make a move to acquire the selection. General manager Monti Ossenfort said he anticipates talks to "heat up" in the next few days. Arizona seemingly feels confident in Kyler Murray (knee), even though he'll likely miss the beginning of the season. However, with signal-caller Bryce Young expected to be the top selection and Alabama linebacker Will Anderson linked to the Texans at No. 2, many teams will look to move up to snag quarterbacks C.J. Stroud, Will Levis, or Anthony Richardson. Although some within the Arizona front office refuse to use the word "rebuild," the organization is in an excellent spot to address needs on both sides of the football. Then, there's the issue of DeAndre Hopkins and whether or not he'll be a Cardinal this season.

Latest On Texans' No. 2 Overall Pick

A stream of skepticism about the Texans taking C.J. Stroud second overall has come out over the past few weeks. Apr 21 · Pro Football Rumors NFL Draft Texans Will Anderson Will Levis Anthony Richardson C.J. Stroud Tyree Wilson Bryce YoungColts Expected To Take QB With Fourth Overall Pick

The Indianapolis Colts feel tons of pressure to take a quarterback with their highest draft selection (No. 4 overall) since 2012. Their issues at the position have lingered for too long after Andrew Luck retired, and if they're desperate enough, they could even trade up to No. 3 overall to take a signal-caller they really like. While general manager Chris Ballard could trade up, ESPN's Matt Miller writes there's also considerable chatter that they won't trade up for a QB if Alabama's Bryce Young and Ohio State's C.J. Stroud are off the board by pick No. 4. In any scenario, it seems likely the Colts will leave the first round with their future starter under center, even if they don't trade up. According to sources close to the team, Kentucky's Will Levis is currently ahead of Florida's Anthony Richardson for the Colts because Levis is more likely to be able to play immediately.

Texans Not Sold On QBs Not Named Bryce Young?

ESPN's DJ Bien-Aime is selling the idea that the Houston Texans will pass on a quarterback with their No. 2 overall pick. If they don't take a signal-caller, they'll be starting either Davis Mills, who was tied for the most interceptions last year with 15, or 35-year-old Case Keenum, who has two starts since 2019. However, there is a belief around the league that Houston isn't sold on the other potential Round 1 QBs outside of Alabama's Bryce Young. Ownership could get involved and change that if they want a young QB to lead the offense, and Ohio State's C.J. Stroud would be a good fit from a value and need standpoint. But the Texans also love Alabama edge rusher Will Anderson Jr., the team's top-ranked overall prospect.

Apr 19 · Pro Football Rumors Falcons C.J. StroudC.J. Stroud Visiting With Falcons Wednesday

The Atlanta Falcons are hosting Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud for a visit on Wednesday. The Falcons have the No. 8 overall pick in this year's NFL draft next Thursday night. Now that Alabama QB Bryce Young is the overwhelming favorite to go first overall to the Carolina Panthers, it has become plausible that Stroud could still be available for the Falcons when they make their pick at eighth overall. Reports have also surfaced that the Houston Texans aren't high on Stroud at No. 2 overall. Still, Stroud isn't expected to be available to Atlanta with the No. 8 pick after being named the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year in both of his seasons with the Buckeyes. The Falcons are also comfortable with Desmond Ridder under center in 2023, so they aren't desperate to take a QB in the top 10.

Falcons Draft Needs

The Atlanta Falcons are taking a serious look at the quarterbacks in this year's draft class, but the team is comfortable with 2022 third-rounder Desmond Ridder under center, according to sources close to the team. Atlanta would need a "dream scenario" to take one of the QBs in the top 10 later this month. ESPN's Matt Miller thinks it would have to be Alabama's Bryce Young or Ohio State's C.J. Stroud, and neither signal-caller is expected to be available at No. 8 overall, where the Falcons pick. The Falcons could attack wide receiver and safety on Day 2 of the draft. The team could use Alabama safety Brian Branch, who is ranked as the top safety in this year's class.

Texans Receiving Calls For No. 2 Pick

Houston Texans general manager Nick Caserio said at his pre-draft press conference on Monday that he has received calls from teams looking to trade up to No. 2 overall in this year's draft. "Are we open for business? We're open to listening," Caserio said. In addition to the second overall pick, the Texans have the No. 12 pick in the first round. They are in full rebuild mode under new head coach DeMeco Ryans heading into 2023, so if the Texans keep the second overall pick, it would be pretty surprising if they didn't take one of Alabama's Bryce Young or Ohio State's C.J. Stroud -- basically the signal-caller that the Carolina Panthers don't take at No. 1 overall. If Houston did trade away the second overall pick, they'd receive a massive haul which would give them even more early round selections in order to beef up their current roster.

Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud is currently visiting with the Las Vegas Raiders on Tuesday, according to a source. Stroud is one of the top QBs in this year's draft, and the Raiders have the seventh overall pick in the first round. He also has visits scheduled with the Indianapolis Colts (No. 4 overall) and the Detroit Lions (No. 6) later this week. Almost every NFL team in the top-eight picks this year is spending extra time with Stroud. The 21-year-old is expected to go at No. 1 overall to the Carolina Panthers, so if the Raiders want to grab Stroud after already signing Jimmy Garoppolo this offseason, they'd most likely have to trade up. Stroud will be a popular dynasty/keeper selection this year no matter where he lands, and there's a good chance he could be starting early in his rookie season.
