Bailey Zappe Signed To 53-Man Roster

The Patriots signed quarterback Bailey Zappe back to the 53-man roster. The signal-caller was surprisingly waived on cutdown day but added to the practice squad after clearing waivers. But considering New England is releasing Matt Corral, it appears Zappe is now the permanent backup. The last move also means there's still a chance Zappe could emerge as the team's starter at some point during the season, so Mac Jones may be on a short leash moving ahead. The 24-year-old appeared in four games last season and threw for 781 yards, five touchdowns, and three interceptions while completing 70.7% of his attempts.

New England Patriots quarterbacks Bailey Zappe and Malik Cunningham were surprisingly released as teams cut down to 53-man rosters on Tuesday. Patriots Waive Bailey Zappe

The New England Patriots waived backup quarterback Bailey Zappe in a surprising move on Tuesday, according to a source. With the Patriots also waiving Malik Cunningham on roster-cutdown day, Mac Jones is now the team's only signal-caller on the roster with the 2023 regular season starting next week. However, the Patriots are hoping to get both Zappe and Cunningham back on their practice squad if they clear waivers. There was some early offseason talk about Zappe potentially competing with Jones for the starting gig in training camp this summer, but that never came to fruition and New England is fully committed to helping Jones bounce back after a disastrous offensive showing in 2022. Bailey Zappe Efficient In Preseason Opener

New England Patriots quarterback Bailey Zappe completed 12-of-14 passes for 79 yards in Thursday's 20-9 preseason loss to the Houston Texans.
