  • Is Desmond Ridder The Future In Atlanta?

The Athletic's Josh Kendall writes that the consensus is that nobody outside the Atlanta Falcons building knows whether the team is committed to quarterback Desmond Ridder for the long term because no one inside the building is talking. Ridder started the final four games of 2022 and went 73-for-115 for 708 yards, two touchdowns and a 112.9 passer rating on third downs. "I don't think it's smart business strategy ever to give away what your plan is," head coach Arthur Smith said. One private QB coach watching practices at UNLV this week expressed concerns about Ridder's throwing motion and how it will affect his accuracy and arm health down the road. Ridder's QB coach Jordan Palmer, however, notes how cerebral he is and says he's "set up for success." Atlanta has the No. 8 overall pick in this year's draft and enough salary cap space to add a high-profile QB, but they could also be content to let Ridder open the 2023 season as the starter under center.

  • Desmond Ridder Throws Two Touchdowns In Win

Atlanta Falcons quarterback Desmond Ridder had two passing touchdowns in the team's 30-17 Week 18 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The rookie quarterback finally had a touchdown after failing to find the end zone over his first three career games. The former Cincinnati Bearcat had his best performance of the year, totaling 224 passing yards and a pair of touchdowns. Furthermore, Ridder had 15.9 fantasy points against the Buccaneers after totaling only 22.9 fantasy points over his first three starts. The Falcons end the year with a 7-10 record and will have a top-10 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. Ridder has made a case to be the starter next year. However, things could change between now and April.

  • Desmond Ridder A Low-End QB2

Atlanta Falcons quarterback Desmond Ridder hasn't done much since taking over as the starter. Last week the rookie made some impressive throws but only scored 5.7 fantasy points against the Arizona Cardinals. Furthermore, the 5.7 fantasy points were his lowest total of the year. The former Cincinnati Bearcat hasn't scored a touchdown in three games this season. However, Ridder has a limited receiving core with Kyle Pitts (knee) out for the year. This week he faces the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in a meaningless matchup for both teams. While the Buccaneers could pull their starters in the second half, fantasy players should start Ridder only as a last resort.

  • Desmond Ridder Quiet In Week 17

Atlanta Falcons quarterback Desmond Ridder had a quiet performance in the team's 20-19 Week 17 win over the Arizona Cardinals. The rookie was making his third career start on Sunday. The former Cincinnati Bearcat completed a career-high 73.1% of his pass attempts. However, he had only 169 passing yards in the game. Ridder did commit his first turnover of the year, fumbling in the second quarter. The rookie finished the matchup against the Cardinals with only 5.7 fantasy points, a career-low. Yet, he played well in the game. Next week the Falcons take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in a meaningless game for both teams. Hopefully, Ridder can end his rookie season on a high note with a win over the Buccaneers.

  • Desmond Ridder Offers Limited Upside

Atlanta Falcons quarterback Desmond Ridder has started the past two games after riding the bench for the first 13 games this season. In his two starts, the rookie has averaged only 157.5 passing yards and 8.6 fantasy points per game. Yet, the former Cincinnati Bearcat had a solid performance last week against the Baltimore Ravens, throwing for 218 passing yards. While he hasn't scored a touchdown this season, Ridder hasn't committed a turnover either. This week he faces the Arizona Cardinals. They have surrendered 18.1 fantasy points per game to quarterbacks this season, the eighth-most in the NFL. However, they have held quarterbacks to only 8.8 fantasy points per game over the past three weeks. Ridder only belongs in fantasy lineups as a desperate QB2 option.

  • Desmond Ridder Totals 218 Passing Yards

Atlanta Falcons quarterback Desmond Ridder has 218 passing yards in the team's 17-9 Week 16 loss to the Baltimore Ravens. The former Cincinnati Bearcat had his second career start on Saturday against Baltimore. While he didn't have a touchdown for the second consecutive game, the rookie quarterback played well. He completed 66.7% of his pass attempts, compared to 50% last week. Furthermore, he averaged 6.6 yards per attempt compared to 3.7 a week ago. With only one week left in the fantasy season, Ridder doesn't have much value. However, the rookie quarterback has an appealing matchup next week against the Arizona Cardinals, making him a low-end QB2.

  • Desmond Ridder A Desperation QB2 In Week 16

Atlanta Falcons quarterback Desmond Ridder will make his second career start Saturday against the Baltimore Ravens. The rookie quarterback had an underwhelming performance against the New Orleans Saints last week, throwing for only 97 yards on 26 pass attempts. The former Cincinnati Bearcat completed only 50% of his pass attempts last week. However, Ridder didn't have a turnover despite facing a talented defense. Meanwhile, the Ravens have shut down quarterbacks lately. Over their past six contests, they have held quarterbacks to only 12.4 fantasy points per game, giving up 12.9 or fewer points to the position in all but one matchup. Fantasy players should avoid starting Ridder this week, as the rookie is a bottom-five starting option.

  • Desmond Ridder Held To 97 Passing Yards

Atlanta Falcons quarterback Desmond Ridder had only 97 passing yards in the team's 21-18 Week 15 loss to the New Orleans Saints. The rookie made his first career start on Sunday after sitting behind Marcus Mariota for the first 14 games of the year. The former Cincinnati Bearcat completed only 50% of his passes, with over half of his 13 completions going to Drake London. While he struggled to throw the ball, Ridder had six rushing attempts for 38 yards in the game. Given the matchup against the Saints, it's disappointing to see the rookie fail to throw 100 yards in the contest. Over their previous three games, the Saints had surrendered 242 passing yards per game. Hopefully, Ridder can build off his awful debut and bounce back next week against the Baltimore Ravens.

  • Desmond Ridder Set To Make First Career Start

Atlanta Falcons quarterback Desmond Ridder will make his first career start in Week 15 against the New Orleans Saints. The Falcons switched to the rookie during the bye week, as Marcus Mariota was placed on the injured reserve list with a knee injury. However, head coach Arthur Smith said he was going to make the change at quarterback regardless of Mariota's injury. The third-round rookie had 56 pass attempts for 431 yards and three touchdowns in the preseason. Meanwhile, the Saints have surrendered 16.9 fantasy points per game to quarterbacks this season, slightly above the league average. Furthermore, they have given up five passing touchdowns over their past three games. Ridder is a solid mid QB2 for fantasy players in superflex leagues this week.

  • Desmond Ridder Officially Named The Starter

Atlanta Falcons head coach Arthur Smith made it official on Monday that rookie quarterback Desmond Ridder will start moving forward, a decision that Smith called "performance-based." Marcus Mariota (knee) is also getting his knee checked out early in the week and is likely headed to Injured Reserve, which will end his season. It explains why the Falcons signed Logan Woodside for depth. The 23-year-old Ridder had the Week 14 bye to prepare to face the New Orleans Saints this weekend in his NFL debut on the road. It won't be easy for the third-round dual-threat QB in a hostile environment, but the Falcons understandably want to see what Ridder can do in the final four games. Ridder will have some low-end QB2 appeal in superflex leagues, but not much should be expected in the Falcons' low-scoring offense.

  • Falcons Considering QB Change?

Entering the season, the Falcons were one of a few teams which were expected to transition away from a veteran quarterback to a rookie at some point during the campaign. That has yet to take place, but the team’s circumstances could change during the bye week. When asked about the situation under center, Falcons head […]

  • Smith Doesn't Rule Out Desmond Ridder Start Moving Ahead

Atlanta Falcons quarterback Desmond Ridder could find himself under center moving ahead. "There's a lot that we need to make sure we get in there and evaluate fairly objectively," said head coach Arthur Smith, speaking after the team's Week 13 loss to Pittsburgh. "Everything's on the table." The Falcons are sitting just one game out of first place in the NFC South. As a result, it may not be the right time to replace Marcus Mariota with the inexperienced Ridder. The rookie hasn't seen a regular-season snap as a professional, so it's unknown how much fantasy managers will benefit by adding him to the roster. That said, Atlanta has a bye in Week 14, so there may not be an update anytime soon.
