  • Desmond Ridder Sees Bulk Of Snaps On Friday

Atlanta Falcons rookie quarterback Desmond Ridder saw the bulk of the snaps during Friday's preseason opener against the Detroit Lions. He completed 10 of 22 passes for 103 yards and two touchdowns while also adding a team-most 59 rushing yards. Ridder is expected to open the season as Marcus Mariota's backup, so it makes sense that he took over for Mariota following the opening drive on Friday. Ridder has some fantasy appeal in dynasty leagues but should remain untouched in redraft formats.

  • Falcons Agree With Desmond Ridder On Rookie Deal

The Atlanta Falcons and third-round rookie quarterback Desmond Ridder agreed to a four-year rookie deal worth $5,362,962 on Tuesday. The deal includes a $1,080,336 signing bonus. The Falcons rookies are reporting to training camp on Tuesday, so they needed to get something done with Ridder so that he could participate. Veteran Marcus Mariota is fully expected to begin the 2022 season as Atlanta's starting signal-caller, but if he falls flat, Ridder could push him for the job at some point down the line. The 22-year-old Ridder will have his ups and downs if he ends up starting games at some point in his rookie season, and he's probably not worth drafting in single-QB, single-year fantasy leagues.

  • Desmond Ridder To Compete With Marcus Mariota?

Atlanta Falcons veteran quarterback Marcus Mariota was the clear No. 1 QB during organized team activities and mandatory minicamp, and he'll have that spot when training camp opens in late July, but rookie third-rounder Desmond Ridder is expected to make a competition of it. It won't be surprising if Ridder takes Mariota's job at some point in 2022. "Behind the scenes, the things that he has done that have really impressed me are from the neck up. You're betting on the physical things that you have seen at times to catch up, but he's light years ahead of most young quarterbacks I have been with from the neck up. I will give him that compliment publicly," head coach Arthur Smith said. Ridder's stock in keeper/dynasty drafts is rising.

  • Desmond Ridder To See Starts In Rookie Season?

It seems like a matter of when, not if, Atlanta Falcons rookie quarterback Desmond Ridder gets to start in his first NFL season, in the opinion of's Daniel Flick. Veteran Marcus Mariota will almost certainly begin the season as the starter, and the Falcons coaching staff won't just play Ridder to play him, so he'll have to be deserving of the opportunity to start. Mariota, a former second overall pick and Heisman Trophy winner, struggled under head coach Arthur Smith in their time with the Titans, and he never played a full season due to injuries in Tennessee. Ridder, taken in the third round of the draft, isn't a natural passer, but he has plenty of leadership qualities and can also make noise on the ground like Mariota. The 22-year-old won't be in play in single-year fantasy formats, but he's a solid developmental pick in dynasty/keeper drafts.
