  • Elijah Mitchell Dealing With A Hamstring Issue

San Francisco 49ers running back Elijah Mitchell (hamstring) may miss the entire preseason. The 24-year-old is currently dealing with a hamstring issue, although he's forecasted to be ready for Week 1. He was the team's most productive back last season, finishing the year with 963 yards and five rushing touchdowns off 207 carries, so being without him wouldn't be ideal, especially with Trey Lance still developing. Nevertheless, if Mitchell can't suit up for the season opener, Kyle Shanahan may lean on Jeff Wilson Jr., Trey Sermon, and rookie Tyrion Davis-Price to collectively carry the load. The team's second-leading rusher during the 2021-22 campaign, Deebo Samuel, could also be utilized more than usual out of the backfield.

  • Tyrion Davis-Price Listed As Fourth RB On Depth Chart

San Francisco 49ers rookie running back Tyrion Davis-Price is listed as the team's No. 4 RB on the first unofficial depth chart of training camp. Second-year back Elijah Mitchell is the starter, with Jeff Wilson Jr. and Trey Sermon directly behind him. Fantasy managers shouldn't read too much into these unofficial depth charts, but it's another reminder that the Niners backfield is very crowded. Davis-Price has looked impressive in training camp and could be involved early in his rookie season, but it's unrealistic to expect him to have a big role given all the other bodies in this backfield. The 21-year-old will be much more attractive in dynasty/keeper setups, and he might be worth a late-round dart throw in deeper leagues.

  • Elijah Mitchell To Be Part Of Committee Approach?

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan appears determined to deploy more of a running-back-by-committee approach in 2022, according to NBC Sports' Matt Maiocco. Mitchell put together a strong performance in his rookie season when Raheem Mostert was lost for the season in Week 1, rushing for 963 yards and five touchdowns. But Mitchell missed six games due to injuries, and there are serious concerns about his durability, which is why the Niners drafted Tyrion Davis-Price in the third round. Mitchell had a "clean-up" procedure on his knee in the offseason, and San Fran also has 2021 third-rounder Trey Sermon in the fold. Davis-Price has the talent to make an immediate contribution in his rookie season, and there's also Jeff Wilson Jr., who could be the No. 2 to open the year. Mitchell should be your first target from this backfield as a low-end RB2, but this could be a frustrating situation from a fantasy perspective.

  • Tyrion Davis-Price Listed As No. 2 On Depth Chart

San Francisco 49ers rookie third-round running back Tyrion Davis-Price is second on the RB depth chart behind Elijah Mitchell and ahead of Trey Sermon heading into training camp. Davis-Price is big, fast and elusive, which could make him an excellent one-two punch with Mitchell. The 21-year-old seems destined to at least be a short-yardage and goal-line option for San Fran this year, which could hurt Mitchell's fantasy ceiling in his second season. Sermon had a tough rookie year in 2021, finishing with 41 carries for 167 yards and one touchdown. He remains in the mix, but it will be an uphill climb for him to find work in the backfield, barring injuries. Behind the trio of Mitchell, Davis-Price and Sermon, the Niners also have Jeff Wilson Jr., JaMycal Hasty and Jordan Mason.

  • Latest On 49ers' Running Backs Room

The 49ers’ running backs room is loaded with talent but loaded, too, with questions marks and a history of injuries. In a breakdown of every San Francisco player from OTAs to minicamp, The Athletic’s Matt Barrows laid out the situation.  The 49ers counted on a sixth-round rookie as their lead back last year. Elijah Mitchell […]

  • Elijah Mitchell To Share The Rushing Load In SF?

San Francisco 49ers' second-year running back Elijah Mitchell emerged as the team's lead back last year, leapfrogging third-rounder Trey Sermon. However, Nick Wagoner of ESPN reported that fantasy managers might need to exercise caution with Mitchell due to the team featuring a different lead back in each of head coach Kyle Shanahan's five years leading the team. They drafted a running back in the third round, selecting Tyrion Davis-Price of LSU. Davis-Price will join Mitchell, Sermon, JaMycal Hasty, and Jeff Wilson Jr. in a once again crowded 49er backfield. Shanahan has spoken highly of Davis-Price, indicating he may see ample snaps to take the rushing burden off of wide receiver Deebo Samuel. "The more guys you can add the better, but kind of the physicality that he brings gives you a chance to have a very physical one-two punch," Shanahan said. "I thought Deebo helped us do that towards the end of last year bringing that in, but you don't want that to be just your one-two punch. You got to bring in some other backs to do that." Mitchell would likely have a much higher ADP if not for the risks of Shanahan pulling some surprise personnel moves.
