Joshua Palmer To Start The Season As No. 3 Receiver

Los Angeles Chargers wide receivers Keenan Allen and Mike Williams are the two top receivers in the Chargers offense. Joshua Palmer will get the majority of the snaps as the third receiver early in the season over rookie first-rounder Quentin Johnston. The 21-year-old rookie pass-catcher is going well before Palmer in fantasy drafts, but Johnston struggled in the preseason and could need some time to develop before becoming more of an every-down player in the NFL. The 24-year-old Palmer, a third-round pick in 2021 out of Tennessee, took a big step in his sophomore season in 2022, catching 72 passes for 769 yards and three touchdowns in 16 games (11 starts) with Allen and Williams missing time with injuries. The bottom line is that fantasy managers should temper expectations with Johnston in Year 1.

The Athletic's Daniel Popper writes that Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver Joshua Palmer has earned more first-team repetitions in three-receiver packages at training camp alongside Keenan Allen and Mike Williams than rookie first-rounder Quentin Johnston. Johnston is in the early stages of his development and has struggled with drops. His role early in his first NFL season will be geared toward specific concepts that will allow him to play fast. Meanwhile, Palmer has the full trust of quarterback Justin Herbert and the coaching staff and has been a regular playmaker in camp. Popper believes Palmer is the safer fantasy bet over Johnston, at least early in the 2023 season. Johnston's current ADP is right around 50, while Palmer's sits at 92.

Offseason In Review: Los Angeles Chargers

Only the 1992 Oilers and 2013 Chiefs surpass the Chargers’ 27-point collapse in Jacksonville. While Sean Payton loomed as a potential HC candidate, GM Tom Telesco elected to give Brandon Staley a third season. The Bolts did overcome more major injury trouble to return to the postseason. The offseason buzz that annually follows the Chargers […]

Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver Joshua Palmer (undisclosed) left training camp practice on Thursday after 7-on-7 drills due to an undisclosed injury. Palmer went to the medical tent and then did not return to the field. We'll pass along further details on Palmer's injury when they become available. For now, consider the 23-year-old day-to-day. If he ends up having to miss considerable time, rookie first-rounder Quentin Johnston would be the primary beneficiary as the locked-in No. 3 receiver in LA behind Keenan Allen and Mike Williams. Palmer became valuable in most fantasy leagues in 2022 with both Allen and Williams missing time with injuries, as he finished with 54 catches for 607 yards from Weeks 2-13. He'll probably need more injuries among the receiving corps to see consistent targets in this offense.

Joshua Palmer, Quentin Johnston Could See Ample Playing Time

Los Angeles Chargers third-year wide receiver Joshua Palmer and rookie first-rounder Quentin Johnston are competing for the No. 3 job behind Keenan Allen and Mike Williams, but both Palmer and Johnston could see ample playing time because of their varying skill sets. "We've certainly got four guys that are all starter guys in this league, and we'll play them in a lot of different ways," new offensive coordinator Kellen Moore said. Palmer and Johnston have each had their share of standout plays in training camp so far. The 21-year-old Johnson has more immediate and long-term upside in fantasy because of his impressive physical attributes alone. Still, with limited volume as long as Allen and Williams stay healthy, Johnston will likely be an inconsistent WR4/flex in his rookie season as mostly a deep threat.

Joshua Palmer Dubbed An "Elite Player"

Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver Joshua Palmer has looked good during training camp and appears poised for a strong 2023-24 campaign under new offensive coordinator Kellen Moore. The 23-year-old has appeared in 33 games in the last two seasons, totaling 1,122 yards and seven touchdowns. While those numbers weren't enough to make him a top fantasy wideout, it at least demonstrates he's progressing. Head coach Brandon Staley stated he believes Palmer is an "elite player," meaning he could quickly establish himself as a routine target for Justin Herbert, especially if Keenan Allen, Mike Williams, or Austin Ekeler goes down with an injury.

Chargers Rumors: Ekeler, Johnston, Salary Cap

Within a limited salary cap, as other positions begin to see an increase in the average value of their contracts, the space in the salary cap for those increases has to come from somewhere. As positions like quarterback and defensive tackle are reaching new highs, it seems that the value of running backs is slowly […]
