  • Kellen Mond, Anthony Barr Out Against Bengals

Minnesota Vikings rookie quarterback Kellen Mond and linebacker Anthony Barr (knee) have been ruled out for the Week 1 season opener against the Cincinnati Bengals. Rookie left tackle Christian Darrisaw (groin) has also been ruled out. With Mond being a healthy inactive, it means that Sean Mannion will serve as Kirk Cousins' backup to kick off the 2021 season. Barr worked his way back from a torn pectoral muscle that he suffered in Week 2 of last year, but he's been dealing with a knee injury for more than a month. In Barr's place on Sunday, Blake Lynch should get the start at strongside linebacker. The Vikings defense should be much better than a year ago, but they are a low-end starting unit, at best, to open the season against a Bengals offense that has plenty of upside.

  • GM Rick Spielman Praises Kellen Mond

Minnesota Vikings rookie quarterback Kellen Mond has endured a roller coaster training camp, from starting it on the COVID list to playing well in the final preseason game against the Chiefs. Mond completed 16-of-23 passes for 196 yards, one interception, one lost fumble and 40 rushing yards over the weekend, mixing some good with plenty of bad. The rookie led the Vikings on their only two touchdown drives of the entire preseason and General Manager Rick Spielman praised the young signal caller for working through the growing pains. "You can get the practices and get the reads, but when you get in games like this, especially for young quarterbacks in the preseason, you're going to get hit. So they have to get through their progressions quicker." Mond has outplayed quarterback Jake Browning during the preseason and should serve as the backup for Week 1.

  • Kellen Mond Battling For Backup Job

Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kellen Mond will battle for the QB2 role on the team with Jake Browning this weekend in the Vikings final preseason game. The rookie got off to a slow start in training camp after being placed on the COVID list and his preseason performance has been uneven at best. Mond final four drives in the second preseason game resulted in three-and-out's and Browning, to this point, has been able to push the ball down the field more. Mond should see plenty of playing time this weekend.

  • Kellen Mond Passes For 61 Yards

Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kellen Mond completed 6-of-12 passes for 61 yards in the Vikings preseason loss to the Colts. The rookie did not lead the team on a scoring drive and had a nice 23-yard connection called back by penalty. Mond has been behind schedule after missing the first portion of training camp due to testing positive for COVID but has inched his way past quarterback Jake Browning for the QB2 role on the team. The coaching staff may use the final preseason game to evaluate one more time but Mond has positioned himself to be the backup for Week 1.

  • Kellen Mond Just 'OK' Against Broncos

Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kellen Mond has barely been able to practice during training camp after being placed on the COVID list and it showed in his first preseason game. Head coach Mike Zimmer didn't mince words, telling reporters, "He was OK. I didn't like when tried to shovel pass the ball to whoever it was on the one third-down play. He used his legs a couple of times. He just has to get moving a little bit quicker. Everything is in slow motion with him, and he's going to have to improve that.....Does (Kellen Mond) take a little too much time reading sometimes? Maybe. But a lot of it is processing....I can tell he needs playing time." Mond currently is the QB3 on the roster but backup quarterback Jake Browning did not play well either. Mond ascend to backup by preseason's end.

  • Kellen Mond Passes For 56 Yards

Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kellen Mond completed 6-of-16 passes for 56 yards in the Vikings preseason game against the Broncos. With starter Kirk Cousins not dressing for the game, Mond entered after second-string quarterback Jake Browning tossed an interception. The results were not pretty as Mond struggled to find open receivers but added 25 rushing yards on five attempts. The rookie passer only got three practices under his belt before being thrust into game action so it's hard to get too down on this mediocre debut performance. It will be easier to assess Mond's progress after another week of practice and more reps in the preseason.

  • Kellen Mond Activated From COVID List

Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kellen Mond has been activated off the COVID-19 list. Mond tested positive on August 1 and will be behind schedule after missing the first two weeks of camp. The rookie passer is being groomed as a possible heir to the starting position with Kirk Cousins entering the final year of his contract. Mond is returning just in time as the team prepares for several joint practices with the Denver Broncos this week.

  • Kellen Mond Tests Positive For COVID

Minnesota Vikings backup quarterback Kellen Mond has been placed on the team's COVID-19 list on Monday after testing positive over the weekend. Mond's positive test has also removed starting quarterback Kirk Cousins and third-stringer Nate Stanley from the practice field due to high-risk close contact. This is not the way Mond wanted to start his pro career and this development seriously hampers the Vikings offense for the rest of this week. All three passers are now in the league's protocols for unvaccinated players and are in line to miss several days, if not this entire week of training camp.
