  • Jimmy Garoppolo Wants To Help Trey Lance

San Francisco 49ers incumbent quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo said he wants to help rookie quarterback Trey Lance with his transition to the NFL after the team took him at No. 3 overall in the first round of last week's draft. Garoppolo entered the league with the New England Patriots and learned behind future Hall of Famer Tom Brady. "I try to use my own personal experiences and just what I went through, what helped me, what challenged me as a young player," Garoppolo said. "I'm going to use those tools that helped me and try to help Trey out." Jimmy G is 24-9 in his time with the 49ers, but he's been injured in two of his three seasons. Garoppolo is expected to enter the 2021 season as the starter under center, but another injury or poor performance could thrust Lance into the spotlight at some point in his rookie season. There is no definitive plan or timetable for Lance to take the starting job next season.

  • 49ers Use Third Pick On Trey Lance

With the No. 3 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, the San Francisco 49ers have selected North Dakota State quarterback Trey Lance. A quarterback was going in this spot as soon as the Niners made this trade, but there was debate for weeks about if it would be Lance or Alabama's Mac Jones. Lance won out. In his one season as a starter, Lance was 192-for-287 for 2,786 yards, 28 touchdowns, and zero interceptions. He added 14 rushing touchdowns as well. Will it take time to adjust to the NFL after playing at the FCS level and basically taking this past season off? Sure, but the physical skills are here. He's got a strong arm and is a hard runner who'll make things happen when the ball is in his hands. The 49ers still technically have Jimmy Garoppolo at quarterback, but don't be surprised to see him moved. Lance shouldn't be a top fantasy pick in 2021 for re-draft, but you can make an argument for him being the No. 2 rookie QB in dynasty.

  • Broncos Still In Position To Draft A Quarterback

The Denver Broncos are still in the running to draft a quarterback at No. 9 overall in the first round of the NFL draft on Thursday night, despite trading for Teddy Bridgewater on Wednesday. The Broncos might actually be in a better position to take a signal-caller on Thursday night because of Bridgewater's arrival. "It also gives them more of a path to drafting Trey Lance if he's there at No. 9," Silver explained. "He's not a guy that they consider is ready to play right away in an optimal world. Didn't play that much at North Dakota State, but now, with Teddy Bridgewater on board, you can make that pick and feel pretty good about it." The Broncos will likely have Drew Lock and Bridgewater compete for the starting gig in training camp, while a rookie QB could be groomed as the future starter beyond the 2021 season.

  • Falcons Keeping Options Open At No. 4 Overall

Atlanta Falcons general manager Terry Fontenot isn't sure exactly which way the team will go with the No. 4 overall pick in the first round of Thursday's NFL draft. The first-year GM insists there's "definitely no pressure" heading into his first draft, because he thinks the pressure comes in the process of preparing for the draft. "We've gone through the different things that can happen. But you never know what is going to happen at that exact moment, but we know the players that we're talking about," Fontenot said. He called Florida tight end Kyle Pitts a special player, and the belief is that the Falcons will be choosing between Pitts, North Dakota State QB Trey Lance or Ohio State QB Justin Fields if they remain at fourth overall. If they don't trade back, Atlanta wants an impact player, "whether it's a player that's going to sit or a player that's going to play right away."

  • John Lynch To Defer To Kyle Shanahan On QB Decision

The San Francisco 49ers have narrowed their options with the No. 3 overall pick in the first round of Thursday's NFL draft to Alabama quarterback Mac Jones and North Dakota State signal-caller Trey Lance. They are still comfortable with five QBs at No. 3 -- Ohio State's Justin Fields, Clemson's Trevor Lawrence, BYU's Zach Wilson, Jones and Lance. Lawrence and Wilson are expected to go first and second, respectively. Lynch said that he is collaborating with and ceding final say to Shanahan on the final QB decision. That deferral by Lynch could mean that the Niners are leaning toward Jones. "Do we know exactly who we want?" Shanahan asked rhetorically at one point. "Maybe, probably, maybe not." Shanahan also wouldn't officially guarantee that Jimmy Garoppolo would be on the roster this Sunday, and the expected 2021 starter could be trade bait this weekend. On the other hand, Shanahan said they feel "very fortunate" to have Garoppolo on the roster with a rookie incoming.

  • 49ers Down To Mac Jones, Trey Lance At No. 3 Overall

Sources are saying that the San Francisco 49ers are down to two prospects -- Alabama quarterback Mac Jones and North Dakota State quarterback Trey Lance -- as they close in on their decision of which signal-caller to take at No. 3 overall in the first round of the NFL draft on Thursday. Several sources say the focus appears to have shifted to those two, with the other QB in play being Ohio State's Justin Fields. The Jacksonville Jaguars are expected to take Clemson's Trevor Lawrence at No. 1 overall, while the New York Jets will likely select BYU's Zach Wilson. The Niners traded up to No. 3 overall with the Miami Dolphins just a few weeks ago, and the belief is that Jones is their guy. The fit with offensive mastermind Kyle Shanahan would be great news for Jones' long-term fantasy value.

  • Trey Lance To Take Part In Second Pro Day

North Dakota State quarterback Trey Lance will take part in a second Pro Day on April 19. Lance had his first Pro Day on March 12 and wowed NFL scouts with his various passes. Since Lance's first Pro Day, Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields and Alabama's Mac Jones impressed during their Pro Day workouts. Fields set his second Pro Day for April 14. The San Francisco 49ers traded up to No. 3 in this year's draft recently and are expected to draft their QB of the future, while the Atlanta Falcons at No. 4 loom as another team that could go with a signal-caller. Lance has all kinds of upside at the next level because of his athleticism with both his legs and arm. There are concerns about his lackluster 2020 season, but Lance's upside and accuracy cannot be overlooked. Sitting behind either Matt Ryan or Jimmy Garoppolo and learning for a year or two would be ideal for his development at the next level.

  • 49ers Acquire Third Overall Pick From Dolphins

The San Francisco 49ers are acquiring the No. 3 overall pick in next month's draft from the Miami Dolphins on Friday in exchange for the No. 12 overall pick, a 2022 third-round pick (San Fran's compensation pick for the Robert Saleh hiring) and first-round picks in 2022 and 2023, according to sources. The move is a blockbuster one that will have ramifications for both teams for years to come. The 49ers are moving up into the top-five picks, presumably to take their quarterback of the future. It's certainly not good news for incumbent Jimmy Garoppolo, who has struggled to stay healthy in his NFL career. Clemson QB Trevor Lawrence is expected to go first overall to the Jacksonville Jaguars. BYU's Zach Wilson, Ohio State's Justin Fields, North Dakota State's Trey Lance and Alabama's Mac Jones are the other potential first-round signal-callers.

  • Trey Lance Won't Run At Pro Day

North Dakota State quarterback Trey Lance, who is expected to be selected in the first round of the upcoming NFL draft, will not run or do agility drills at his school's Pro Day this Friday. Teams have told Lance's camp that they're more interested in seeing him throw. Lance won the starting job as a redshirt freshman in 2019 and threw for 2,786 yards, 28 touchdowns and no interceptions while running for 1,100 yards and 14 touchdowns. The talent is clearly there, but there are concerns about him starting only 17 games in college against lesser competition. Going in his favor is the fact that the Bisons ran a pro-style offense. Lance has been compared to Andrew Luck and Josh Allen for his cannon of an arm but also his ability to take off and use his legs. If he can improve on his accuracy, he'll have an extremely high ceiling at the next level.
