Mike's Thoughts: An aggressive redraft rank if the 49ers decide to slow play Lance behind the veteran Garoppolo, because they otherwise have a very competitive team. I don't think that will happen. Even if they are winning games early they could turn the reigns over to Lance if he is outplaying JimmyG in practice. Drafted Lance 14.07 (163) in a 1QB 12-team PPR on 8/15.

  • Trey Lance Could Be Starting Soon

The San Francisco 49ers have lost four games in a row heading into a Week 8 matchup with the Chicago Bears, and quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo struggled badly in a Week 7 loss to the Indianapolis Colts. With rookie first-rounder Trey Lance (knee) returning from a sprained knee this week, he could be on the field in a key role very soon if Garoppolo continues to struggle and the team continues to lose, according to sources. In a perfect world, Lance would sit all year and learn behind Garoppolo, but the team could make a change sooner than later if Garoppolo continues to struggle. Lance, the No. 3 overall pick, has more upside than Jimmy G from a fantasy perspective, and fantasy managers may want to consider stashing him now if you have the room if your QB situation isn't ideal.

  • 49ers Thinking About Future With Trey Lance

San Francisco 49ers rookie quarterback Trey Lance (knee), the third overall pick in this year's draft, is expected to return to backup duties after returning to a limited practice on Wednesday. Head coach Kyle Shanahan reiterated that Lance's health and readiness, not the team's record, would dictate how much he'll play and when he'll take over starting duties from Jimmy Garoppolo. "I get all the questions and everything like that, but we didn't draft Trey to just fix this year," Shanahan said. "We drafted him so he could be the quarterback here of the future." The Niners want Lance to develop and prefer not to throw him in the fire, which could potentially damage his development. It's clear the third overall pick has more pure upside than Jimmy G, and he's worth stashing in deeper leagues for his rushing prowess alone, but San Francisco is preaching patience.

  • Trey Lance Back At Practice Wednesday

San Francisco 49ers rookie quarterback Trey Lance(knee) was back to a limited practice Wednesday after missing the past two weeks with a knee injury. Despite head coach Kyle Shanahan saying that quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo played his worst game on Sunday, there seems to be no indication that the veteran will lose his job. Still, with the team not performing, it's not a bad idea to stash Lance if he's available in your league. The rookie's raw ability and rushing floor could make him a huge factor in the second half of the fantasy season.

  • Trey Lance "On Pace" to Practice Wednesday

San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan said quarterback Trey Lance is "on pace" to practice Wednesday. According to Shanahan, Lance will likely be limited if he does practice this week. The No.3 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft will back up Jimmy Garoppolo in Week 8 against the Chicago Bears. Lance has been dealing with an MCL sprain in his left knee and has been sidelined since Week 5. The 21-year-old is considered day-to-day. Fantasy managers should continue to stash Lance as a high-upside stash in all league formats.

  • Trey Lance Doesn't Practice Monday

San Francisco 49ers rookie quarterback Trey Lance (knee) was not at practice on Monday while dealing with a left knee sprain, and Nate Sudfeld could serve as the team's backup quarterback for the second straight game in Week 7 against the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday night. Jimmy Garoppolo (calf), who has been out since Week 4, practiced without limitations on Monday and is on track to return in Week 7. Lance injured his knee in his first career start in Week 5, and it appears serious enough to keep him out coming out of the bye week. The 21-year-old first-rounder went 15-for-29 for 192 yards, no touchdowns and an interception in his starting debut, also rushing 16 times for 89 additional yards. There's a lot to like long term with Lance, but it's clear that Garoppolo is the starter when he's healthy.

  • Trey Lance Suffers Knee Sprain In Week 5

San Francisco 49ers rookie quarterback Trey Lance (knee) suffered a left knee sprain in the Week 5 loss to the Arizona Cardinals in his first career NFL start. The injury is not expected to be a long-term issue, but Lance could be sidelined for a week or two. The good news is the 49ers have a bye in Week 6, and quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo (calf), who still remains the starter when healthy, is expected to be back for a Week 7 matchup with the Indianapolis Colts. Lance went 15-for-29 for 192 yards, no touchdowns and an interception against Arizona, adding 16 rushing attempts for 89 yards on the ground. The 21-year-old third-rounder isn't likely to miss much time, if any at all, but it could be a while before he sees another start, depending on Garoppolo's health.

  • Trey Lance Held Without A Touchdown In Week 5 Debut

San Francisco 49ers rookie quarterback Trey Lance completed 15 of 29 pass attempts for 192 yards and an interception, adding 16 carries for 89 yards on the ground during Sunday's 17-10 Week 5 loss against the Arizona Cardinals. Lance failed to score a touchdown in his debut and threw an interception, getting stood up on a goal-line rushing attempt and facing continuous pressure in the pocket. The rookie was impressive as a ball carrier, using his speed and size to average 5.5 YPC. The 49ers will head into their Bye Week on a three-game losing streak with no promises that Lance will return under center for their return in Week 7 against the Indianapolis Colts.

  • 49ers Not Prepared For Trey Lance To Start?

San Francisco 49ers rookie quarterback Trey Lance was forced into action in the second half of the Week 4 loss to the Seattle Seahawks when Jimmy Garoppolo injured his calf in the first half. Head coach Kyle Shanahan wasn't ready for the switch and had recently avoided the idea of even getting Lance in more regularly alongside Garoppolo. San Fran hopes Lance is the future of the franchise, but the plan wasn't to play him this soon. Shanahan sounded more committed to Jimmy G recently, but they may have no choice but to start Lance in a Week 5 showdown with the undefeated Arizona Cardinals. The 21-year-old first-rounder threw two touchdowns in relief, but he looked flustered most of the time and took off running seven times for 41 yards. There's clear upside here because of Lance's dual-threat abilities, but he's raw and inexperienced and wouldn't come recommended as a QB1 streamer if he has to make his first career start in Week 5.

  • Trey Lance Throws Two Touchdowns in Week 4 Loss

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance completed 9-of-18 pass attempts for 157 yards and two touchdowns during Sunday's 28-21 Week 4 loss against the Seattle Seahawks. The rookie came into the game to relieve an injured Jimmy Garoppolo and connected on a 76-yard deep ball to Deebo Samuel in the third quarter, albeit against blown coverage. Depending on the severity of Garoppolo's calf injury moving forward, Lance could ascend into QB1 territory for fantasy lineups, as he displayed his big arm and rushing upside, carrying seven times for 41 yards against the Seahawks on Sunday.

  • 49ers Fans Itching For Trey Lance

San Francisco 49ers rookie quarterback Trey Lance had 49ers fans going wild after he scored his first career rushing touchdown in Week 3 against the Green Bay Packers. It was a one-yard touchdown run right before half-time and it gave the team their first points of the day. 49ers fans are very clearly eager to see the Lance, the third overall pick in this year's draft, get his opportunity. However, he's played just seven snaps so far and the starting quarterback job is still firmly in the hands of Jimmy Garoppolo. Garoppolo has led the team to a 2-1 record out of the gate. He's thrown four touchdowns and one interception and he's completed 67.4% of his passes. 49ers fans will have to remain patient on the changing of the guard for now.

  • The 49ers Aren't Going To Play Trey Lance "Just To Get Him Snaps"

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said the team "isn't going to play QB Trey Lance just to get him snaps." The first-round quarterback did not enter Week 2's 17-11 win over the Philadelphia Eagles. Lance appeared in Week 1, he completed his only pass attempt for a five-yard touchdown and rushed three times for two yards in Sunday's 41-33 win over the Lions. Shanahan reportedly insists Lance doesn't enter games with a set number of plays that feature Jimmy Garoppolo's backup. "No, I never have a plan that," said Shanahan. "Hey, I'm going to use him, or I'm not going to use him. It's always an option throughout the game. It's been two games, and I've never had him in the openers, and I've never had him as a designated time. I plan on doing that week-to-week and whenever I feel like putting him in. You saw when I did in Week 1, and I never got that urge in Week 2." The 49ers are 2-0, and there is no rush for San Francisco to bench Garoppolo at the moment, making Lance a high-upside bench stash in fantasy leagues.

  • Trey Lance Throws Touchdown Pass During Week 1 Win

San Francisco 49ers rookie quarterback Trey Lance completed his lone pass attempt for a five-yard touchdown to Trent Sherfield in the first quarter to put the 49ers up 7-0. Unfortunately, this was the only significant production Lance delivered during Sunday's 41-33 win over the Detroit Lions. Garoppolo looked good against a bad defense and will remain the starting quarterback against the Eagles in Week 2, rendering Lance an afterthought for fantasy purposes. He should remain on fantasy benches, even in two-quarterback leagues, until head coach Kyle Shanahan decides to incorporate him more within the offense.

  • Trey Lance Good To Go Against Lions

San Francisco 49ers rookie quarterback Trey Lance (finger) is without an injury designation on the team's final injury report for Week 1 against the Detroit Lions, which is an indication that he's good to go for his first NFL contest. Lance was limited in practice all week, but he should be on the active roster this weekend. The 21-year-old first-rounder jammed his right hand and suffered a chip fracture on one of his fingers two weeks ago. Veteran Jimmy Garoppolo will enter the year as the starter under center, but Lance figures to be involved in the offense in some capacity. However, it remains to be seen how much playing time Lance will actually see. For now, he's an excellent dynasty/keeper asset and is worth a bench stash in two-QB leagues in case he takes over for Jimmy G at any point.

  • Trey Lance Limited On Thursday

San Francisco 49ers rookie quarterback Trey Lance (finger) remained limited in practice on Thursday. The third overall pick in the 2021 has been dealing with a chip in his finger and had a splint removed on Monday. It's encouraging news that Lance could have a shot to suit up in Week 1 versus the Detroit Lions, but veteran quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo remains at the top of the depth chart for now. The 49ers didn't draft Lance to not utilize him and if he's active, it wouldn't be a surprise to see him get some action on the field. The rookie has a tremendous upside and should be rostered in most formats for that reason, even with Garoppolo opening the season as the No. 1 signal caller on the depth chart.

  • Trey Lance Still Not Throwing

San Francisco 49ers rookie quarterback Trey Lance (finger) did not throw during Monday's practice. This is a negative development in the rookie's recovery, as head coach Kyle Shanahan said last week that the goal was for Lance to practice in full on Monday. Instead, he participated during individual drills but did not make throws. With that said, according to Eric Branch of The San Francisco Chronicle, the No. 3 pick "did grip a football, which he did not do last week, during a drill near the start of practice." Going forward, it will be important for Lance to ease back into throwing once he is ready. After all, the 49ers don't want to worsen his injury before he has even played a game for them. While San Francisco has not named a starting quarterback for Week 1, it looks like Lance's ailment will give the job to Jimmy Garoppolo.

  • Trey Lance Trending In The Right Direction

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance (finger) is "trending in the right direction" according to general manager John Lynch. As the preseason concluded, it became increasingly apparent that the rookie wouldn't start Week 1, so this injury was never too concerning for fantasy managers. Still, the No. 3 overall pick holds immense upside once he inevitably takes the job from veteran quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. Excluding top quarterback options Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen and Justin Herbert, Lance is the only player that holds the same cherished combination of arm strength and mobility, and in such a quarterback-friendly system, he will be set up to channel his skills immediately. The 21-year-old is a valuable asset in dynasty and Superflex leagues and is worth a roster spot in standard leagues as well.
