Buccaneers Release John Wolford

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers released quarterback John Wolford on Monday. The Buccaneers already named Baker Mayfield as the starter at QB heading into the 2023 regular season, while Kyle Trask will serve as his backup to kick things off. With no other signal-callers on the roster, Wolford will be a candidate to return to Tampa on their practice squad. The 27-year-old former undrafted free agent out of Wake Forest spent the first three seasons of his NFL career playing for the Los Angeles Rams. In those three years, he went 61-for-104 for 626 yards, only one touchdown pass and five interceptions in seven games (four starts).

Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback John Wolford (neck) is "feeling better," according to head coach Todd Bowles. "He's moving around, so, you know, that's the best we can offer right now. The tests came out pretty good. We'll just see how he recovers." The signal-caller, who signed with the Bucs in May after playing most of his career with the Rams, sustained a neck injury during Saturday's preseason meeting with the New York Jets. But considering this isn't the first neck injury of Wolford's career, the team will likely have a better idea of his condition soon while taking things slow in the process.

John Wolford Suffers Injury On Saturday

Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback John Wolford (neck) was forced to exit early during Saturday's preseason matchup against the New York Jets. Wolford was called upon to take over the quarterback duties after Kyle Trask played the entire first half. Sadly, the 27-year-old suffered a neck injury when he had his helmet driven to the ground on a sack. Wolford was placed on a backboard and carted off the field. It sounds like he still has all his movements, so hopefully it was only a minor injury. The Bucs should give another update on his status shortly.
