Fantasy Advice

Stud. Confidence runs high with Burrow and he backs it up. Not expected to run much but he did score 5 TD on the ground last year. Awesome receiving talent. It will be interesting to see if the team retains Joe Mixon by restructuring his contract. RB depth behind him is, in a word, yikes. Regardless, there isn't a lot of downside with Burrow. 8/14: Caution flag added for a calf injury which is keeping Burrow on the sidelines through camp and preseason. He is expected t be ready for the start of the season.

  • Joe Burrow Listed As Full Practice Participant

    Headshot for Joe Burrow

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow (calf) was listed as a full participant in Wednesday's practice for the first time since the week of the Baltimore Ravens game in Week 2. However, the Bengals only held a walkthrough practice on Wednesday, so his status was an estimation. The 26-year-old strained his calf at the beginning of training camp and missed all of the preseason before aggravating the injury in Week 2. He gutted it out in the Monday night win over the Los Angeles Rams, but his mobility was very limited and he didn't look good by any means while throwing for 259 yards with no touchdowns and one interception on a great play by a Rams defensive back. The good news about Week 3 is he was finally able to get top wideout Ja'Marr Chase involved. Burrow should get better as the season progresses and his calf injury gets put behind him, but for now, he's more of a low-end QB1 in fantasy.

  • Joe Burrow Guts Out Calf Issue In Close Victory

    Headshot for Joe Burrow

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow (calf) completed 26-of-49 attempts for 259 yards and one interception in Monday's narrow 19-16 win over the Los Angeles Rams. Cincinnati's game plan called for a hobbled Burrow to get the ball out quick despite a zone-heavy Rams defense that wasn't sending much heat for most of the night. It was a sleepy first half for the entire Bengals offense, and the 26-year-old's mostly rhythmless start to the year dragged into this one for a pitiful 5.3 yards per attempt on 49 throws. Burrow's pick came on a great fourth-quarter play by Ahkello Witherspoon to keep LA within striking distance when it seemed Cincy was about to pull away. Look for Burrow and the Bengals to try and open up the air attack in a prime opportunity to do so in Week 4 against the Tennessee Titans defense, which has nearly surrendered three consecutive 300-yard passing days to open the season.

  • Joe Burrow Officially Active On Monday Night

    Headshot for Joe Burrow

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow (calf) is officially active on Monday night against the Los Angeles Rams after being listed as questionable to play. Burrow aggravated his right-calf strain in Week 2, an injury that kept him out for all of training camp and the preseason. The 26-year-old was able to do enough throughout the week to convince the coaching staff to let him play, though. Burrow probably isn't 100 percent, however, and fantasy managers that started him the first two weeks of the season probably should have gone in another direction to be safe. The Bengals will try to keep Burrow out of harm's way as much as possible, which could mean a bigger workload for lead back Joe Mixon in this one.

  • Optimism Surrounding Joe Burrow's Monday Night Status

    Headshot for Joe Burrow

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow (calf) went through a workout on Monday morning and there is optimism that he will play and that his status for Monday night's game against the Los Angeles Rams is trending in the right direction, according to sources. Burrow is campaigning with the coaching staff and trainers to play, but his status remains uncertain. Burrow's final status for Week 3 will become official soon. If the 26-year-old is inactive, backup Jake Browning would start for the Bengals, which would be a big downgrade for all of the team's offensive skill players in terms of fantasy upside. Burrow missed all of training camp and the preseason because of his calf injury, and it's led to a slow start for the entire Bengals offense.

    Headshot for Joe Burrow

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow (calf) is still uncertain for Monday's game against the Los Angeles Rams. The signal-caller is a true game-time decision with a calf strain that he aggravated last week. Burrow did gradually take more work in practices and handled first-team repetitions during Sunday's walkthrough. He is officially listed as questionable. If Burrow is unable to play, Jake Browning will get the start. The 27-year-old has thrown one pass in his NFL career.

  • Joe Burrow Will Be Game-Time Decision Monday

    Headshot for Joe Burrow

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow (calf) is expected to be a game-time decision for Week 3 versus the Los Angeles Rams. According to NFL.com's Ian Rapoport, Burrow's pre-game workout will decide whether or not he suits up. His status remains a true question mark, but given that Burrow doesn't play until Monday, it would be wise for fantasy managers to make backup plans. Pulling Burrow, the QB32 overall in fantasy football, from lineups on Sunday allows for managers to find his replacement within a larger list of candidates. On the other hand, waiting until Monday night comes with risk, because if he's ruled out, managers will have to pivot to Matthew Stafford or Baker Mayfield.

    Headshot for Joe Burrow

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow (calf) is questionable for Monday Night Football against the Los Angeles Rams in Week 3. Head coach Zac Taylor told reporters on Saturday that "we'll see" in regard to Burrow playing or not. The Bengals also worked out and signed veteran QB AJ McCarron to their practice squad, which would indicate that Burrow truly is questionable after re-aggravating his calf in Week 2. Although the team hasn't released their final injury report at this time, beat writer Jay Morrison stated that Burrow will be listed as questionable. Fantasy managers that roster Burrow should already have a backup plan in place in case the fourth-year QB can't go on MNF. All of the Cincinnati pass-catchers, Ja'Marr Chase, Tee Higgins, and Tyler Boyd would be downgraded if Jake Browning ends up starting under center on MNF.

  • Joe Burrow Limited In Friday's Practice

    Headshot for Joe Burrow

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow (calf) was a limited participant in Friday's practice. Burrow didn't do anything on Wednesday after aggravating a right-calf injury in the Week 2 loss to the Baltimore Ravens that caused him to miss all of training camp and the preseason this summer. The return to practice gives the 26-year-old a chance to play on Monday night against the Los Angeles Rams, but we'll know more about Burrow's status on Saturday. Cincinnati isn't going to put their franchise signal-caller in harm's way, so fantasy managers should consider him an extremely risky QB1 play for the week with the Bengals contest coming on Monday. If Burrow is held out, Jake Browning would run the offense, which in turn would make all of Cincy's offensive skills players hard to trust.

  • Joe Burrow Doesn't Practice Thursday

    Headshot for Joe Burrow

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow (calf) did not take part in practice on Thursday. Bengals head coach Zac Taylor said that the team will take it "day-to-day" with Borrow after he aggravated a calf injury in the Week 2 loss that kept him out for all of training camp and the preseason, and Burrow himself said "we'll see" when asked if he'll play on Monday night against the Los Angeles Rams. Burrow's calf injury and inactivity this summer is a big reason why Cincy's offense has gotten off to a slow start, and that may not chance for a while if he's forced to miss additional time. If you drafted the 26-year-old hoping he'd be your starter each and every week, you should already be searching for an insurance policy in Week 3, especially with the Bengals' game not coming until Monday this week. If Burrow misses Monday's game, Jake Browning would make the start under center.

  • Joe Burrow Limited In Thursday's Practice

    Headshot for Joe Burrow

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow (calf) participated in Thursday's practice and was seen wearing a sleeve on his right calf. The 26-year-old strained the calf during training camp in July and missed most of the preseason as a result. So far this season, Burrow has struggled to live up to the expectations placed on him after signing his 5-year, $275 million contract extension just before the Bengals' season started. Through the first two weeks, Burrow has 304 passing yards and has completed 57% of his passes, leading to speculation that the calf injury may be hampering his performance. Burrow is considered day-to-day and is questionable for his Week 3 matchup against the Los Angeles Rams.

  • Joe Burrow Feeling Better After Aggravating Calf In Week 2

    Headshot for Joe Burrow

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow (calf) has apparently been feeling better the last few days after aggravating his strained calf in Sunday's Week 2 loss to the Baltimore Ravens, per Mike Garafolo. The Bengals play on Monday night so they won't begin practicing until Thursday so the extra day of rest should help Burrow, Garafolo noted. While it's encouraging to hear that he's feeling better, this calf issue is likely to linger throughout the season. To make matters worse, NFL insider Ian Rapoport noted that "we are not going to get a 100% healthy Joe Burrow, probably for some time" while speaking on Good Morning Football on Wednesday morning. This could just come down to pain tolerance for the fourth-year quarterback. However, even if he's able to tough it out and play through the pain, he's not nearly as effective as a passer with a bum calf. The Bengals will release their practice report on Thursday but fantasy managers that roster Burrow would be wise to have a backup plan in case Cincinnati decides to rest their franchise QB in favor of backup Jake Browning on MNF against the Los Angeles Rams.

Cincinnati Bengals head coach Zac Taylor said it was hard to say if quarterback Joe Burrow (calf) will be able to play next Monday night against the Los Angeles Rams in Week 3. Burrow apparently tweaked a right-calf injury in the Week 2 loss to the Baltimore Ravens that he's been dealing with since early in training camp. With the Bengals not playing until Monday night this week, Burrow's injury could make fantasy managers' decisions very tough. At the very least, you should have a backup QB in place just in case it doesn't look good for Burrow later this week. The 26-year-old and the Bengals got off to another slow start on Sunday, but he managed to go 27-for-41 for 222 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. That said, Burrow will be out or limited for the next chunk of training camp practices and it would be surprising to see him take part in preseason action. While it's never a positive to see a fantasy superstar get banged up in the offseason, Burrow avoided the worst-case scenario and should be just fine for the start of the 2023 NFL season.

  • Joe Burrow Suffers Calf Strain Thursday

    Headshot for Joe Burrow

Updating a previous report, Cincinnati Bengals sources have confirmed that quarterback Joe Burrow (calf) suffered a strained right calf in training camp practice on Thursday. Burrow will undergo further testing just to be sure, but it's at least good news that the talented 26-year-old isn't dealing with a dreaded Achilles injury like many speculated. We'll have a better understanding of how much time Burrow might miss this summer, but he's not expected to play in any preseason games now as a precaution so that he can be ready to roll in Week 1 of the regular season. It means that Trevor Siemian and Jake Browning will see more action in training camp. For now, this shouldn't negatively affect Burrow's fantasy stock too much as a top-five QB1.

  • Joe Burrow Believed To Have Suffered Calf Strain

    Headshot for Joe Burrow

Updating from a previous post, Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow (calf) suffered a calf strain, according to head coach Zac Taylor. While an injury early in camp is never a good thing, a calf strain is mild compared to other potential outcomes. Burrow will likely be out or limited during upcoming practices and preseason games, but his Week 1 status should not be in danger. Burrow is expected to post high-end fantasy QB1 numbers in 2023.

  • Joe Burrow Carted Off Field At Training Camp

    Headshot for Joe Burrow

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow went to the ground grabbing his calf near the end of practice on Thursday. Burrow was briefly looked at by the team's medical staff before being carted off the field. While it's a concerning development for the superstar gun-slinger, it's too early to draw conclusions about his status. Since teams usually practice far away from the facility, a player being carted off at training camp is far different than a player being carted off during a game. Surely, there will be timely updates regarding the young quarterback's status moving forward.

Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow is among the team's stars up for contract extensions this year, while Cincinnati's two-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase is eligible for a new deal next year, as the club takes aim at its first Super Bowl title.

  • La'el Collins Placed On PUP List

    Headshot for Joe Burrow

Cincinnati Bengals offensive tackle La'el Collins (knee) will open training camp on the physically unable to perform list. The veteran joined the Bengals on a three-year, $21 million contract last offseason. But he struggled throughout the season. Even worse, Collins tore his ACL and MCL during the Week 16 matchup versus the Patriots, ending his year. Cincinnati is committed to keeping Joe Burrow upright, so much so that the team signed Orlando Brown Jr. in March. Collins has proven to be a quality protector over the years. However, his future with the Bengals may come down to which version shows up to play down the line.

  • Deals Likely To Follow Joe Burrow's Impending Extension

    Headshot for Joe Burrow

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow arrived at training camp, despite an offseason filled with talk of a new contract. There isn't any doubt an extension will get done for the former LSU Tiger. However, according to Kelsey Conway of the Cincinnati Enquirer, other deals will be on hold until the signal-caller signs on the dotted line. Burrow finished last season by throwing for 4,475 yards, 35 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. He also completed 68.3% of his attempts and found the end zone five times on the run, making him a top fantasy signal-caller. The 26-year-old has made it known he wants to remain surrounded by Ja'Marr Chase and company. But until his deal is official, wide receiver Tee Higgins and linebacker Logan Wilson will need to wait. On the other hand, new agreements with those two should come not long after Burrow gets what he wants.

  • Joe Burrow Led The League In Batted Passes Last Year

    Headshot for Joe Burrow

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow led the league in batted passes at the line of scrimmage in 2022 with 25. Batted passes resulted in five of Burrow's 14 interceptions -- nobody else in the league had more than two. There were only 27 other batted-pass interceptions for the rest of the NFL in 2022. The Bengals could add more play-action or run-pass options to slow opposing defensive lineman from sitting back and waiting to put their hands up against the quick-pass game. However, Burrow had passes batted at a higher percentage when using play-action out of the shotgun last year than not. The addition of more play-action for the Bengals offense this year won't necessarily create more long-developing explosive plays down the field, but Burrow and Company can still hit on those plays at any time.
