  • Latest On Eagles' Coaching Search, Josh McDaniels 'Prime' Candidate?

Jan 18 · Pro Football Rumors Eagles Jalen Hurts Carson Wentz
  • Philadelphia Interviews Josh McDaniels For Head Coach Role

The Philadelphia Eagles have added two new candidates to their list for potential head coach, as Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels was brought in for an interview Sunday, while a request has been made to speak with Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy. McDaniels has been through the rigor of interviewing for multiple franchises' head coach gigs since returning as New England's OC back in 2012. With Bieniemy also on the Eagles' list, it would appear that a move of officially having a new HC is at least a few days off. One of the biggest factors is likely how prospective coaches would handle the Carson Wentz/Jalen Hurts situation at QB, as the Philadelphia brass appears to be leaning toward keeping Wentz in the mix come '21.

  • Eagles Fire Doug Pederson

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Doug Pederson has been fired, according to a source. Pederson met with ownership again on Monday to discuss his future plans for the team and their offense in particular, but apparently the team's brass didn't like what they were hearing and were ready to move on after Pederson led the team for five seasons, including a Super Bowl win in 2016 over the Patriots. The Eagles went 4-11-1 and benched the struggling Carson Wentz late in the season in favor of rookie Jalen Hurts, who provided a spark down the stretch. A questionable decision to bench Hurts for Nate Sudfeld in the Week 17 regular season finale against Washington also wasn't a good luck for Pederson, and he reportedly wasn't convinced that Hurts was the franchise signal-caller heading into 2021. It's unclear if this move will improve Wentz's chances of sticking with the team moving forward.

  • Doug Pederson On Shaky Ground

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Doug Pederson's status is on shaky ground and he could be out as the head coach if owner Jeffrey Lurie is not confident about Pederson's vision for the team in their next meeting, according to sources. The two are expected to meet again early this week in Florida after discussions this past Tuesday didn't go well. Lurie's concerns go well beyond the struggles of quarterback Carson Wentz, ranging from personnel to the coaching staff's outlook. The Eagles went 4-11-1 in 2020, but Pederson led the team to its only Super Bowl title in 2017 and playoff berths each of the previous three seasons. Philadelphia finished 26th in scoring (20.9 points per game) and 28th in passing yards (207.9 per game) this season, with Wentz being benched in favor of rookie Jalen Hurts down the stretch. Wentz plans to ask for a trade this offseason because of a fractured relationship with Pederson, according to sources.

  • Eagles Players Didn't Like Jalen Hurts' Benching

Philadelphia Eagles running back Miles Sanders said that "nobody" on the team liked the decision to bench rookie quarterback Jalen Hurts for Nate Sudfeld in the Week 17 loss to the Washington Football Team, who took the NFC East title with the win. Head coach Doug Pederson was determined to get Sudfeld some work in the game, but many players and coaches on the sidelines were "shocked and outraged," according to The Philadelphia Inquirer's Jeff McLane. Hurts was 7-for-20 for 72 yards and also ran the ball eight times for 34 yards and two touchdowns before being pulled. Sudfeld predictably struggled, tossing an interception and losing a fumble. Philly has a major decision to make under center heading into 2021. Is Hurts their guy or will they give Carson Wentz another chance? Hurts outplayed Wentz when given the opportunity, and his dual-threat ability will make him a high-end QB2 in 2021 if Wentz is out of the picture.

  • Jalen Hurts Benched In The Fourth Quarter

Philadelphia Eagles rookie quarterback Jalen Hurts was benched in the fourth quarter of Week 17's loss to the Washington Football Team. Before being pulled, Hurts had completed just seven of his 20 pass attempts for 72 yards and an interception. He was much more effective on the ground, rushing eight times for 34 yards and two touchdowns. Nate Sudfeld took the ball in the fourth quarter, leaving the Eagles with way more questions than answers heading into the offseason. Their QB situation will be one of the more interesting things to keep an eye on throughout the offseason.

  • Jalen Hurts To Start In Week 17

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Doug Pederson said that rookie quarterback Jalen Hurts will start in Week 17 against the Washington Football Team on Sunday night. Hurts has started the last three games after taking over for an ineffective Carson Wentz in Week 13. In his first three NFL starts, Hurts has gone 62-for-113 for 847 yards, five touchdowns and two interceptions while running 38 times for 238 yards and a score on the ground. The Oklahoma product did throw two picks and lose a fumble in the Week 16 loss to Dallas, but there's no denying that he's provided a much-needed spark for this Eagles offense. Hurts has thrown for over 300 yards in each of the last two games. The 22-year-old will have a tough matchup against Washington to close out the year, but he'll be a QB2 with upside as the Eagles look to spoil Washington's playoff hopes.

  • Doug Pederson Expects To Return In 2021

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Doug Pederson doesn't think his job is in jeopardy and "fully expects" to return as the head coach next season despite losing to the division-rival Cowboys in Week 16 to eliminate the team from postseason contention. As Pederson pointed out, the Eagles have won a championship and have made the playoffs in three of the five seasons that he's been in charge. Philly enters a Week 17 matchup with Washington with a 4-10-1 record. Rookie quarterback Jalen Hurts will remain the starting QB in the regular season finale. Hurts has started the last three games since taking over in Week 13 for Carson Wentz. The rookie had his worst outing so far against Dallas, committing three turnovers, but he's thrown five touchdowns and two picks to go with 847 yards and a rushing score in his three games. The 22-year-old will be a QB2 with upside against Washington to close out the year.

  • Jalen Hurts Totals Over 400 Yards In A Loss

Philadelphia Eagles rookie quarterback Jalen Hurts totaled over 400 yards of offense in a Week 16 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. Hurts completed 21 of his 39 pass attempts for 342 yards, throwing one touchdown and two interceptions. Hurts also ran the ball nine times for 69 yards. He played very much like a rookie in this one, making some excellent plays right next to some head-scratching ones. He fumbled twice, losing one of the two. Hurts completed passes to nine different receivers, continuing a trend of spreading the ball around to anyone in an Eagles jersey. The loss eliminated the Eagles from the playoff picture, so they'll wrap up their season next week against the Washington Football Team.

  • Jalen Hurts Easily In The QB1 Conversation For Week 16

Philadelphia Eagles rookie quarterback Jalen Hurts is easily in the QB1 conversation in Week 16. In fact, he may be somewhere in the top half of that list. Hurts has been the overall fantasy QB13 and QB1 in his two starts, respectively, and those were against much better defenses than his Week 16 opponent in the Dallas Cowboys. Hurts could have league-winning upside in the fantasy championship and should be started in every format in which he's rostered.

  • Jalen Hurts To Start Against Cowboys

Philadelphia Eagles rookie quarterback Jalen Hurts will make his third start in Week 15 against the division-rival Cowboys, according to head coach Doug Pederson. At this point this was just a formality after Hurts threw for 338 yards and three touchdowns while adding 63 rushing yards for another touchdown in the Week 15 loss to the Cardinals. The 22-year-old exceeded expectations in his first career start against a tough Saints Defense in a win last week, and he certainly didn't disappoint in his second career start. Hurts has provided the necessary spark for an Eagles offense that was stuck in neutral for most of the year under Carson Wentz. He has made everyone around him better and he should have some QB1 upside in a Week 16 meeting against a Dallas defense that isn't scaring anyone.

  • Jalen Hurts Totals Four Touchdowns In Week 15

Philadelphia Eagles rookie quarterback Jalen Hurts was responsible for four touchdowns in a Week 15 loss to the Arizona Cardinals. Hurts completed 24 of his 44 pass attempts for 338 yards and three touchdowns. He added 11 rushes for 63 more yards and another touchdown. Hurts moved the ball much better than Carson Wentz did at any point this season, but it wasn't enough to give the Eagles their fifth win of the season. Hurts looked good on the ground like last week, but looked better through the air than he did last week. He did fumble the ball three times, but all three were recovered by the Eagles. Hurts is sure to get the Week 16 start against an exploitable (but suddenly effective) Dallas Cowboys Defense. He'll be a QB1 for the fantasy championships.

  • Philadelphia Plans To Name Week 16 Starting QB On Monday

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts delivered a masterful performance during Sunday's loss to the Cardinals, compiling 399 yards of combined offense to go along with four touchdowns. But that was not enough for head coach Doug Pederson to tab him as the team's starter for Week 16 versus Dallas. Pederson noted that he would likely announce his starting QB on Monday, which is almost certainly going to be Hurts, as opposed to Carson Wentz. After a solid performance in his first start against a tremendous Saints Defense, Hurts put together eye-popping numbers against a solid Cardinals unit, which puts him in consideration for QB1 status in deeper season-long leagues should he ultimately be tabbed to face the Cowboys.

  • Jalen Hurts Expected To Start Rest Of 2020

Philadelphia Eagles rookie quarterback Jalen Hurts is expected to be the starting quarterback in Philly for the rest of the 2020 season. Hurts is a dual-threat player who made a major impact on the ground in his first NFL start, rushing for 106 yards. His presence helps negate some of the offensive line issues that had hurt Carson Wentz. This doesn't mean Hurts will be the starter in 2021, but things are looking bleak when it comes to Carson Wentz's future in Philadelphia.

  • Jalen Hurts Set For At Least A Decent Performance In Week 15

Philadelphia Eagles rookie quarterback Jalen Hurts is set for at the very least a strong rushing performance in Week 15 against the Arizona Cardinals. Hurts ran for 106 yards last week against the Saints and ended up as fantasy's QB13. The Cardinals have an imposing pass defense, but they've allowed the fifth-most rushing yards to opposing quarterbacks, so while Hurts may not fill the stat sheet with his arm, he's a pretty safe bet to get things going with his legs. His upside is somewhat limited by the players around him on offense, but his rushing ability makes him a low-end QB1 with a higher floor than most ranked around him.

  • Jalen Hurts To Start Again In Week 15

Philadelphia Eagles rookie quarterback Jalen Hurts will make his second career start in Week 15 against the Cardinals after leading the team to an upset win over the Saints in his first career NFL start on Sunday. Hurts completed only 56 percent of his passes and averaged 5.6 yards per completion through the air, but his legs were the story, running the ball 18 times for 106 yards. He became the first rookie QB to throw for a touchdown and run for over 100 yards in his first NFL start. The Oklahoma alum provides a dual threat under center and sparked an offense that had been stuck in neutral all year under Carson Wentz, but fantasy managers will want to see more before crowning him as a QB1. The Cardinals Defense has allowed the fifth-most rushing yards (316) to QBs this year, but they've only allowed two rushing touchdowns. Hurts will be a QB2 with upside because of his rushing ability this weekend.

  • Doug Pederson Mum On Jalen Hurts Starting Another Game

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Doug Pederson wouldn't name a starter at quarterback for Week 15 against the Cardinals despite rookie quarterback Jalen Hurts playing very well in the upset win over the Saints in his first career start in Week 14. However, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport says it's basically a foregone conclusion that Hurts -- who became the first rookie QB to run for 100 yards and throw a touchdown pass in his first NFL start -- will start again against Arizona this weekend. With just three games remaining in the regular season, Hurts could have cemented himself the starting gig the rest of the way over Carson Wentz, whose contract could be traded in the offseason. Hurts is an intriguing dual-threat signal-caller, but he averaged only 5.6 yards per completion on Sunday against a very tough Saints Defense. Fantasy managers will want to see more from Hurts as a QB2, but his rushing ability will give him a higher floor than most.

  • Jalen Hurts Runs All Over The Saints In Week 14

Philadelphia Eagles rookie quarterback Jalen Hurts was impressive on the ground in Week 14, leading the Eagles to a surprise win over the New Orleans Saints. Hurts was making the first start of his NFL career and completed 17 of his 30 throws for 167 yards and a touchdown. He did the most damage with his legs though, running the ball 18 times for 106 yards. Hurts had the offense moving and made the Eagles look like a real NFL team for one of the first times this season. While coach Doug Pederson hasn't named a starter for Week 15 just yet, it's almost impossible to imagine anyone besides Hurts back under center against the Cardinals next week.

  • Eagles Players Believe Jalen Hurts Will Start Rest Of Season

Philadelphia Eagles players and team sources reportedly believe that rookie quarterback Jalen Hurts will start for the rest of the 2020 season, replacing Carson Wentz. While head coach Doug Pederson has only committed to Hurts for this week, it makes sense for the franchise to see what they have in the young passer. Hurts should be added in two-QB leagues, and we'll know more about his fantasy value after we see how his Week 14 game against the Saints goes.

  • Jalen Hurts Gets A Tough Matchup For His First Start

Philadelphia Eagles rookie quarterback Jalen Hurts will make his first NFL start in Week 14 against the New Orleans Saints. Hurts came into the Week 13 loss after Carson Wentz was benched and seemed to immediately give some life to the Eagles offense. They still lack top-end talent among their pass catchers and the offense wasn't only struggling because of Carson Wentz. But still, Hurts is the starter for at least one week (coach Doug Pederson wouldn't commit to a starter beyond this week), making him a priority add in most formats and an immediate option in 2QB and Superflex leagues.

  • Eagles Not Committing To Jalen Hurts Past Week 14

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Doug Pederson made the switch to rookie quarterback Jalen Hurts over Carson Wentz for Week 14 against the Saints, but Pederson hasn't committed to Hurts past this weekend's game. "I don't have a crystal ball," Pederson said Wednesday when asked if Hurts will be the starter beyond one game. Hurts will be the first Eagles rookies since at least 1950 to make his first career QB start in Week 14 or later. He went 5-for-12 for 198 yards, a touchdown and interception in relief of Wentz in the loss to the Packers last week and also ran the ball five times for 29 yards. His dual-threat ability could give the Eagles an added element on offense, but it won't be easy against a tough New Orleans defense. Since 2016, the Saints are 6-1 against rookie QBs, allowing a 53.3 completion percentage, 179.6 passing yards per game, nine touchdowns, four interceptions and an 80.2 passer rating. Hurts will be a low-end QB2 in single-season affairs. Pederson isn't giving up on Wentz, though, so if Hurts struggles this Sunday, anything could happen going into Week 15.

  • Jalen Hurts Named The Starter

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Doug Pederson is naming rookie Jalen Hurts as the new starting quarterback over Carson Wentz. Hurts will make his first career start in Week 14 against the Saints, according to sources. The 22-year-old from Oklahoma gave the Eagles offense a spark when he replaced Wentz in the Week 13 loss to the Packers, going 5-for-12 for 109 yards with a touchdown and interception. He also added five carries for 29 yards on the ground. Philadelphia just couldn't go on with Wentz stinking up the joint under center. Hurts offers more upside running the football because he's incredibly athletic and mobile. The rookie's accuracy throwing the football will be tested, though, and he'll make for a low-end QB2 against a Saints Defense that has allowed the sixth-fewest fantasy points to QBs all season.

  • Eagles Haven't Decided A Starting QB For Week 14

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Doug Pederson said on Monday that he hasn't decided on the team's starting quarterback for Week 14 against the Saints after Carson Wentz was benched for rookie Jalen Hurts in the Week 13 loss to the Packers. Wentz went 6-for-15 for 79 yards while running the ball three times for 18 yards before being replaced by Hurts in the third quarter. Hurts went 5-for-12 passing for 109 yards, a touchdown and an interception and gave the Eagles offense a spark that Wentz just hasn't been able to create in 2020. At this point, it seems likely that the Eagles will turn to the rookie the rest of the way, so fantasy managers shouldn't plan on having Wentz in superflex leagues this weekend. Hurts has intriguing upside as a thrower and a runner, but he'll be a low-end QB2 against a tough New Orleans defense if he gets the first start of his career under center.

  • Jalen Hurts Worth Stashing In Deeper Leagues

Philadelphia Eagles rookie quarterback Jalen Hurts is worth a stash in deeper formats, especially in leagues that start two quarterbacks each week. Hurts has yet to be on the field for more than seven snaps this season, but there are strong rumblings that the Eagles are unhappy with starter Carson Wentz. Even though head coach Doug Pederson has given Wentz the old vote of confidence, anyone who has watched a single quarter of Eagles football this season knows he's just not playing at a high level. Hurts may not be able to do any better given the issues all over the Eagles offense, but Pederson may not be able to keep trotting Wentz out there if he keeps looking the way he has been. Hurts should be nowhere near any starting lineups yet, but fantasy managers with a spare bench spot could give him a look.

  • Jalen Hurts Takes His First Snap Without Carson Wentz

Philadelphia Eagles rookie quarterback Jalen Hurts took his first snap of his NFL career without starting quarterback Carson Wentz also on the field. Hurts completed a six-yard pass for his only offensive statistic of the game. Hurts was reportedly taking first-team snaps during the week, leading some to believe the Eagles may be at least considering a switch. With the offensive line unable to block anyone and the receivers unable to get open, there aren't really too many quarterbacks who would succeed with this current Eagles roster.

  • Jalen Hurts To See Increased Playing Time

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts is expected to see more playing time on Monday night against the Seahawks. Carson Wentz is still the Eagles' starter- though they intend to use Hurts for plays at a time in an attempt to spark an offense that ranks 26th in yards and 24th in points scored. It's anyone's guess as to how the snaps will play out, but it could be a similar situation to the one in New Orleans, where Taysom Hill normally rotates in. Hurts likely won't have much fantasy value in this role, though he makes for an interesting stash if he impresses against Seattle.
