  • Jahmyr Gibbs Takes Back Seat To David Montgomery Again

    Headshot for Jahmyr Gibbs

Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs rushed eight times for 40 yards and caught four of his five targets for 11 yards in the win over the Green Bay Packers. With David Montgomery active, he was once again relegated to a limited workload. The talented rookie running back is becoming a frustrating fantasy asset after failing to deliver a respectable fantasy outing through four weeks. His role could grow later in the season, but for now, he should be viewed as a shaky flex play with some PPR upside.

  • David Montgomery Finds End Zone Three Times

    Headshot for David Montgomery

Detroit Lions running back David Montgomery was questionable to face the Green Bay Packers on Thursday Night Football. The 26-year-old suited up, and he delivered a big-time performance for fantasy managers who rolled the dice on him. He rushed 32 times for 121 yards and three touchdowns and caught two passes for 20 yards in the win. He continues to be the clear lead back for Detroit and is a must-start fantasy option moving forward, regardless of matchup.

  • David Montgomery Active Against Packers

    Headshot for David Montgomery

Detroit Lions running back David Montgomery (thigh), who was listed as questionable for the Thursday night game against the Green Bay Packers, is officially active for the Week 4 tilt. Montgomery suffered a bruised left thigh in the Week 2 game and was held out of last Sunday's convincing victory over the Atlanta Falcons. In the first two games of his Lions tenure, the 26-year-old split playing time with rookie Jahmyr Gibbs in the backfield and saw 37 carries for 141 yards and two touchdowns while adding just one catch for seven yards. Montgomery should have a role on Thursday night against Green Bay, but he could definitely take a back seat to Gibbs and have his snap count limited, making him a risky RB3/flex play in his return.

  • David Montgomery Expected To Play Thursday Night

    Headshot for David Montgomery

Detroit Lions running back David Montgomery (thigh) is expected to return to game action against the Green Bay Packers, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero. The veteran running back suffered the injury in Week 2 against the Seahawks and missed Week 3. Montgomery was listed as limited in practice all week. If he's ready for his normal workload, Montgomery will split touches with rookie Jahmyr Gibbs in the Detroit backfield. Consider him a low-end RB2 in Week 4.

  • David Montgomery Listed As Questionable Ahead of TNF

    Headshot for David Montgomery

Detroit Lions running back David Montgomery (thigh) is listed as questionable ahead of Thursday night's game against the Green Bay Packers. The veteran running back suffered the thigh injury in Week 2 against the Seahawks and ended up sitting out Week 3 with the issue. He got in three limited practices ahead of TNF so he's listed as questionable for the Lions' divisional tilt against the Packers. He's trending in the right direction but fantasy managers won't know for certain if "Monty" is going to suit up on Thursday until the Lions release their final inactive list a few hours before the game starts. It never hurts to have a backup plan in place but Montgomery would slot in as a mid-range RB2 against the Packers on the road if he plays. His potential return would cut into the workload of rookie Jahmyr Gibbs as well, who saw a career-high 17 rushes in Week 3.

  • Lions Optimistic About David Montgomery's Week 4 Status

    Headshot for David Montgomery

Detroit Lions running back David Montgomery (thigh) missed the team's Week 3 contest against the Atlanta Falcons after exiting the Week 2 loss to the Seattle Seahawks with a thigh injury. On Tuesday, head coach Dan Campbell said he is "starting to feel pretty good" about Montgomery's chances to play on Thursday Night Football against the Green Bay Packers this week. He also mentioned left tackle Taylor Decker (ankle) could return. If Montgomery plays and sees a full workload, he's close to a must-start option after seeing 37 carries and scoring two touchdowns in his first two games with the organization. Jahmyr Gibbs' Week 4 value would take a hit as he'd likely be reduced to a complementary role once again. However, there's always a risk Montgomery's touches could be limited, meaning he could be a risky fantasy option to begin the week.

  • David Montgomery Listed As Limited

    Headshot for David Montgomery

Detroit Lions running back David Montgomery (thigh) was listed as a limited practice participant on the team's estimated injury report on Monday after they went through a walkthrough. Montgomery didn't play in the Week 3 win over the Atlanta Falcons, but it seems as though he'll have a chance to return after missing just one game for a Week 4 matchup against the division-rival Green Bay Packers this Thursday night. In the 26-year-old's absence on Sunday, rookie Jahmyr Gibbs saw 17 carries for 80 yards, with Craig Reynolds and Zonovan Knight backing him up. Montgomery's return would cap the upside of Gibbs, who has so far been a disappointment for fantasy managers expecting RB1 upside in his first NFL season.

  • David Montgomery Doubtful To Play In Week 3

    Headshot for David Montgomery

Detroit Lions running back David Montgomery (thigh) didn't practice all week and is listed as doubtful to play in Week 3 on Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons. Montgomery was expected to miss some time all along after getting hurt in the Week 2 overtime loss to the Seattle Seahawks, so fantasy managers should have already moved him to their benches for this week. Consider him highly questionable to play on a short week in Week 4 next Thursday night against the Green Bay Packers on the road. With Montgomery out, Craig Reynolds will serve as the backup to rookie first-rounder Jahmyr Gibbs. Gibbs has underwhelmed in his first two NFL games so far, but he'll have obvious RB1 upside this weekend with Montgomery out of the picture.

  • David Montgomery Does Not Practice Thursday

    Headshot for David Montgomery

Detroit Lions running back David Montgomery (quad) missed his second consecutive day of practice on Thursday. The fifth-year veteran was injured in the Lions' Week 2 game against the Seattle Seahawks, suffering a deep bruise to his thigh on a play in the third quarter. So far, Montgomery has seen the most work out of the backfield, getting 37 rushing attempts to rookie Jahmyr Gibbs' 14. Gibbs could have the breakout fantasy managers drafted him for his Montgomery misses time. The Lions take on the Atlanta Falcons at home in Week 3.

  • David Montgomery Doesn't Practice Wednesday

    Headshot for David Montgomery

Detroit Lions running back David Montgomery (thigh) was unable to practice on Wednesday. We've heard conflicting reports when it comes to Montgomery's status after he was injured in the Week 2 overtime loss to the Seattle Seahawks. Montgomery thinks he's going to need a couple of weeks to recover, while head coach Dan Campbell called him day-to-day this week. It remains to be seen if the 26-year-old will be able to play in Week 3 versus the Atlanta Falcons, but fantasy managers should prepare for the worst and plan to be without him. Rookie first-rounder Jahmyr Gibbs should have a hefty workload for as long as Montgomery is out, with Craig Reynolds and Zonovan Knight serving as his backups.

  • David Montgomery Deemed Day-To-Day

    Headshot for David Montgomery

Updating from a previous report, Detroit Lions running back David Montgomery (thigh) is being considered day-to-day after suffering a thigh bruise in the Week 2 loss to the Seattle Seahawks. An earlier report said he could miss a few weeks, so hopefully he's truly day-to-day and won't miss much more than a game. The 26-year-old has rushed 37 times for 141 yards and two touchdowns in his first two games with the organization and should continue to have plenty of fantasy value as the team's early down back -- especially in standard and half-PPR leagues. If he misses any game action, rookie Jahmyr Gibbs should see additional touches.

  • David Montgomery Expects To Miss "A Couple Weeks"

    Headshot for David Montgomery

Detroit Lions running back David Montgomery (quadriceps), who didn't finish the Week 2 overtime loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday after limping off, told reporters it would take "a couple weeks" for his quadriceps injury to heal. Montgomery was injured late in the third quarter of the 37-31 loss and never returned. Fantasy managers that had been starting the 26-year-old former Chicago Bear in the first two weeks will now have to go elsewhere for perhaps the next couple of weeks. Before leaving on Sunday, Monty had 16 carries for 67 yards and his second touchdown of the season while catching his only target for seven yards. Rookie first-rounder Jahmyr Gibbs will now definitely see his workload increase heading into a Week 3 meeting with the Atlanta Falcons, with Craig Reynolds likely to serve as his backup.

    Headshot for David Montgomery

Detroit Lions running back David Montgomery (thigh) was injured during Sunday's loss to the Seattle Seahawks. The 26-year-old, who had 16 carries for 67 yards and a touchdown, suffered what appeared to be a knee injury. However, according to head coach Dan Campbell, Montgomery may have sustained a thigh bruise, which is better news than expected. Fantasy managers will likely know more about his condition in the next day or two. But Montgomery will probably carry an injury designation heading into Week 3 against the visiting Atlanta Falcons. If he can't suit up, Jahmyr Gibbs should see more touches, with Craig Reynolds the favorite to get the rookie's scraps.

  • David Montgomery - Week 2 Outlook for Fantasy Football

    Headshot for David Montgomery

Detroit Lions running back David Montgomery looked the clear lead ball carrier in the team's Week 1 win over the Kansas City Chiefs. The 26-year-old rushed 21 times for 74 yards and a touchdown, while rookie running back Jahmyr Gibbs had just nine total touches. While Gibbs is likely to eat into Montgomery's workload as the season progresses, Montgomery is a strong play in fantasy lineups until further notice. Detroit's Week 2 opponent, the Seattle Seahawks, allowed 92 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns against the mediocre Rams' offensive line, so Detroit's offensive line might have its way in this contest. The Lions are expected to put up plenty of points in this Week 2 contest, and Montgomery should at least continue to be the primary goal line runner. Start him with confidence.

    Headshot for David Montgomery

Detroit Lions running back David Montgomery rushed 21 times for 74 yards (3.5 YPC) and scored a rushing touchdown in the 21-20 win over the Kansas City Chiefs. The 26-year-old handled 12 more touches than rookie running back Jahmyr Gibbs and played 78% of the offensive snaps. Until proven otherwise, Montgomery looks like the primary back in Detroit and is set up for another favorable matchup against Seattle next week. He didn't draw a single target in Week 1, though, so his fantasy production could be touchdown-dependent.

  • David Montgomery Has Real Upside In Season-Opener

    Headshot for David Montgomery

Detroit Lions running back David Montgomery joined the team on a three-year, $18 million contract this offseason. His deal was lucrative compared to the dried-up running back market, so he should see plenty of usage right away in Detroit. While Jahmyr Gibbs will likely have a lock on the receiving back role, Montgomery is expected to assume last year's Jamaal Williams role as the goal line sledgehammer. In what should be a high-scoring contest against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 1, he has real touchdown upside. It looks like Kansas City will be without Chris Jones (holdout), meaning Montgomery's path to wide-open running lanes behind one of the league's best offensive lines becomes even easier.

  • David Montgomery Expected To Take Over Goal-Line Carries

    Headshot for David Montgomery

The Detroit Lions gave running back David Montgomery a three-year, $18 million deal this offseason, but they also took rookie Jahmyr Gibbs with the 12th overall pick in the draft. The Athletic's Colton Pouncy writes that Montgomery is expected to take over the goal-line carries in one of the league's best offenses, while Gibbs is expected to play some slot receiver in addition to RB. If Gibbs stays healthy, he has the potential to develop into the fantasy star that D'Andre Swift never became due to injuries. Both Gibbs and Montgomery have standalone fantasy appeal on a weekly basis in this new and improved Lions offense, with the youngster Gibbs having the higher upside, especially in PPR leagues.

Detroit Lions running back Craig Reynolds played most of the first half in Friday's 26-17 win over Carolina, taking 11 carries for 41 yards and a touchdown and catching his lone target for a five-yard gain. Reynolds played the vast majority of snaps with Teddy Bridgewater and the second-string offense. Since top backs Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery were rested, it's hard to imagine Reynolds getting much work as the No. 3 RB if both guys ahead of him remain healthy for Week 1 at Kansas City. At this point, he's best left on the waiver wire in most fantasy leagues.

  • David Montgomery, Jahmyr Gibbs Considered Co-Starters

    Headshot for David Montgomery

Detroit Lions running back David Montgomery has typically been the first running back with the offense in training camp, but rookie first-rounder Jahmyr Gibbs gets plenty of repetitions, too. The Athletic's Colton Pouncy considers them co-starters in the backfield this year. Given Gibbs' receiving skills, Pouncy expects the snap distribution to look pretty similar. The Lions can even play them on the field together. Craig Reynolds' spot as the RB3 looks pretty safe. Head coach Dan Campbell is calling Montgomery and Gibbs a two-headed monster. Detroit took Gibbs with the sixth overall pick in this year's draft, so he's going to have a significant role early on and will immediately have more fantasy upside that Montgomery, especially in PPR leagues.

  • Jahmyr Gibbs, David Montgomery To Form Two-Headed Monster

    Headshot for David Montgomery

Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell envisions a "two-headed monster" at running back this year with rookie first-rounder Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery. Detroit had a top-five rushing attack in 2022 with D'Andre Swift and Jamaal Williams, but they've replaced them with Gibbs and Montgomery. Gibbs became the team's highest-drafted RB (No. 12 overall) since Barry Sanders went third overall in 1989. He has impressed the coaching staff in his first training camp because of his dual-threat running style. Montgomery might open the year as the favorite on early downs, but Gibbs is immediately more attractive in fantasy leagues because of his all-around abilities, especially as a pass-catcher.

  • David Montgomery, Jahmyr Gibbs Targeted Often In Practice

    Headshot for David Montgomery

Detroit Lions running backs David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs were both reportedly targeted in the passing game "quite often" in Monday's practice, according to Colton Pouncey of the Athletic. "Both Gibbs and Montgomery were involved out of the backfield," Pouncy wrote. "And both looked fluid and comfortable as receivers." Gibbs was drafted No. 12 overall mostly due to his pass-catching skill set, so there's no surprise he's involved early on. However, Montgomery getting plenty of receiving work could mightily elevate his 2023 fantasy outlook. The 26-year-old caught 155 passes in four seasons with the Chicago Bears, so he should be viewed as a real threat out of the backfield. Both Gibbs and Montgomery are expected to have plenty of value this season and both finishing as high-end RB2s wouldn't be a surprise.
