Fantasy Advice

This is one of the more polarizing players for fantasy this preseason. Can he adequately take over for Dalvin Cook? Opportunity is there, the skill might not be. I'd be more inclined to stockpile more receiving talent than target Mattison in a draft. I did get him RB25 in the Scott Fish Bowl.

  • Alexander Mattison Shows Some Life Against Bears

    Headshot for Alexander Mattison

Minnesota Vikings running back Alexander Mattison easily led the team in rushing during Monday's dejecting 12-10 loss to the division-rival Chicago Bears, taking 10 carries for 52 yards with two receptions for 11 yards. Mattison didn't stand much of a chance at first-half production, considering Minnesota ran only 22 plays for 76 total yards and failed to convert any of their four third downs. But the 25-year-old Boise State product managed to supply a tolerable fantasy result in the end, as the Vikings were able to sustain drives a bit more effectively during the second half. Perhaps the bigger fantasy story for Mattison was his ability to seemingly extinguish the recent rise of the speedier Ty Chandler, who was relegated to sheer change-of-pace duties with five touches for 11 total yards. Still without a rushing touchdown in 2023, however, Mattison heads on a Week 13 bye as one of the NFL's least impressive lead backs before a meeting with the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 14.

  • Alexander Mattison A FLEX Option Versus Bears

    Headshot for Alexander Mattison

Minnesota Vikings running back Alexander Mattison will look to bounce back in Week 12 after a lackluster performance last week where he carried the ball 18 times for 81 yards and lost a fumble against the Broncos. The Boise State product will go against a Bears defense that has allowed just 875 yards and 3.4 yards per carry this season, so the 25-year-old looks like a touchdown-dependent FLEX option at best this week. Mattison hasn't been short of volume in favorable game scripts this season, so he figures to get his fair share of opportunity in what should be a neutral script for the Minnesota offense. However, Ty Chandler was able to outproduce Mattison last week on just 14 touches, so fantasy managers should consider the possibility that Mattison could lose some work to his explosive backfield mate in this one.

  • Vikings Want To Keep Ty Chandler Involved

    Headshot for Cam Akers

Minnesota Vikings running back Ty Chandler had a big showing against the Denver Broncos on Monday Night Football in Week 11, posting 110 yards on 14 touches. He posted 45 yards and a rushing touchdown in the week prior. Vikings offensive coordinator Wes Phillips wants to keep giving him opportunities. "I think he's shown that he making plays and we're going to continue to try to get him touches," said Phillips. "We're going to try to get him touches and make sure he's a part of it." Chandler might not have consistent fantasy value while sharing a backfield with Alexander Mattison, but the second-year back should be rostered in at least deep leagues after two impressive games. Mattison has struggled to fill the big shoes of Dalvin Cook, so this could become a clear committee moving forward. Cam Akers (Achilles) is out of the season with a torn Achilles.

  • Alexander Mattison Gets The Green Light Against Denver

    Headshot for Alexander Mattison

Minnesota Vikings running back Alexander Mattison (head) is officially active for Sunday night's matchup with the Denver Broncos. The 25-year-old was ruled out during the Week 10 meeting against the Saints due to a concussion and missed practice throughout the week. However, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported on Sunday morning that Mattison would be good to go, although fantasy managers are now getting the official update well after most games have been played. That said, Mattison has struggled on the ground this season, but he still warrants starting consideration. His availability also means Ty Chandler could see less work than initially anticipated.

  • Alexander Mattison Likely To Suit Up Versus Denver

    Headshot for Alexander Mattison

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Minnesota Vikings running back Alexander Mattison (head) is expected to play in Sunday's game against the Denver Broncos. The 25-year-old was ruled out in the Week 10 win over the New Orleans Saints due to a concussion, allowing Ty Chandler to amass 15 carries for 45 yards and a touchdown. Although Chandler still might get some touches, his involvement won't be near the level it would have been had Mattison been ruled out. As a result, fantasy managers should pump the brakes before considering Chandler for any lineup. At the same time, Mattison hasn't played at the level most had envisioned heading into the 2023-24 campaign. However, he should get a bulk of the carries out of the backfield for the favorable matchup with Denver, so he at least deserves flex consideration.

  • Alexander Mattison Questionable With Concussion

    Headshot for Alexander Mattison

The Minnesota Vikings have listed running back Alexander Mattison (concussion) as questionable for the Week 11 primetime showdown on Sunday night in Denver against the Broncos. Mattison suffered a concussion in the Week 10 win over the New Orleans Saints and never returned, leaving him up in the air to play this weekend. After not practicing on Wednesday, Mattison was limited on Thursday, but he still needs to receive final clearance through the league's concussion protocol. And with the game being on Sunday night this week, Mattison is an extremely risky fantasy lineup option, unless you also have backup Ty Chandler as insurance. Chandler has been a popular waiver-wire pickup of late with Mattison iffy to go, and he'd be an RB3/flex option in a good matchup against a soft Broncos run defense.

  • Alexander Mattison Returns To Practice Thursday

    Headshot for Alexander Mattison

Minnesota Vikings running back Alexander Mattison (concussion) returned to a limited practice on Thursday after sitting out of Wednesday's session due to a concussion he suffered in the Week 10 win over the New Orleans Saints. It's progress for Mattison, but he will still need to clear the league's concussion protocol before this Sunday night's contest versus the Broncos in Denver. The good news is fantasy managers that have been using Mattison in their starting lineups should know by Saturday as to whether he's cleared the protocols. If the 25-year-old is unable to gain clearance for Week 11, Ty Chandler should see the majority of backfield work for the Vikes, with Kene Nwangwu also seeing an increased workload. Chandler would jump into RB3/flex territory if he gets the start in a great matchup against the Broncos.

  • Alexander Mattison Doesn't Practice Wednesday

    Headshot for Alexander Mattison

Minnesota Vikings running back Alexander Mattison (concussion) remains in the league's concussion protocol and did not practice on Wednesday. Mattison suffered a concussion in the Week 10 win over the New Orleans Saints, and his status for the Week 11 Sunday night game against the Denver Broncos is now firmly in question. He still has a few more days to gain clearance, but fantasy managers shouldn't expect him to gain clearance to play this weekend. With Cam Akers (Achilles) done for the season, Ty Chandler should take over lead-back duties in Minnesota if Mattison misses any time. Kene Nwangwu would also have an expanded role against Denver if Mattison is out.

  • Alexander Mattison Still In Concussion Protocol Monday

    Headshot for Alexander Mattison

Minnesota Vikings running back Alexander Mattison (concussion) remains in the league's concussion protocol on Monday, per The Athletic's Alec Lewis. A concussion forced Mattison from the third quarter of Sunday's eventual 27-19 home win over the New Orleans Saints, leaving explosive change-of-pace back Ty Chandler with a featured role in his stead. It's been a tough year for the 25-year-old Mattison, who is plodding for 3.5 yards per carry and zero rushing touchdowns over 130 attempts in his first year as the Vikings' de facto workhorse following Dalvin Cook's departure. Chandler ran 15 times for 45 yards and a score against the Saints, representing an obvious waiver-wire add as Minnesota's probable lead back next Sunday night against a league-worst Denver Broncos run defense if Mattison cannot pass protocol by then. It remains to be seen if Mattison is able to log some activity during Wednesday's upcoming practice.

  • Ty Chandler Works As Lead Back After Alexander Mattison's Injury

    Headshot for Alexander Mattison

Minnesota Vikings running back Ty Chandler went from being a relative unknown in the fantasy world to a top waiver-wire pickup in the span of a week. First, backup Cam Akers suffered a season-ending left Achilles tear last week. Then, lead back Alexander Mattison (concussion) was forced to leave the Week 10 win over the New Orleans Saints, leaving Chandler in the No. 1 role. The 25-year-old saw a team-high 15 carries on Sunday and gained 45 yards (3.0 yards per carry) and the first touchdown of his career. He was not involved in the passing game. Chandler would operate as Minnesota's lead back most likely if Mattison misses any time going forward, beginning with a juicy Week 11 matchup on Sunday night against the sieve-like Denver Broncos run defense.

  • Alexander Mattison Ruled Out With Concussion Sunday

    Headshot for Alexander Mattison

Minnesota Vikings running back Alexander Mattison (concussion) has been ruled out for the remainder of Week 10 versus the New Orleans Saints. His final stat line includes eight carries for 27 rushing yards. He also caught one of two targets for an additional six yards through the air. Minnesota is already without Cam Akers (Achilles), so losing Mattison is bad news. That leaves the Vikings with just Ty Chandler and Kene Nwangwu out of the backfield (plus fullback C.J. Ham). Mattison will look to get healthy ahead of Week 11 versus a weak Broncos run defense.

  • Alexander Mattison Looking To Stay Hot Against Saints

    Headshot for Alexander Mattison

Minnesota Vikings running back Alexander Mattison had his best game of the year in the Week 9 win over the Atlanta Falcons, producing 16.3 half-PPR fantasy points on 16 carries for 44 yards and two catches for 49 yards and a touchdown. He'll be looking to keep that going in a tough Week 10 matchup against the New Orleans Saints in quarterback Joshua Dobbs' first start with the Vikings. Mattison has seen double-digit carries in the last two weeks and in six of nine games in 2023. Minnesota should continue to lean heavily on him as long as game script allows, although he's facing a Saints defense that has allowed the fifth-fewest half-PPR points to opposing RBs this year. Consider Mattison to be on the RB2/3 borderline this weekend at home.

    Headshot for Alexander Mattison

Minnesota Vikings running back Alexander Mattison carried the ball 16 times for 44 yards and added two receptions for 49 yards and a touchdown in the team's Week 9 win over the Falcons. Mattison's longest play of the day was a 47-yard reception, which made up for another inefficient day on the ground. Cam Akers (ankle) was carted to the locker room in this one, so the Minnesota offense could be leaning heavily on Mattison out of the backfield moving forward. The Boise State product should be able to maintain RB2 value for the rest of the season despite his inefficiency this season due to volume alone.

  • Alexander Mattison A Low-End RB2 In Week 9

    Headshot for Alexander Mattison

Minnesota Vikings running back Alexander Mattison will look to have a bounce-back effort in Week 9 versus the Falcons after an inefficient game on the ground in Week 8. Mattison carried the ball 16 times for just 31 yards, as he could not produce in what looked like a good matchup versus a vulnerable Packers' run defense. It does not get any easier in Week 9, as the 25-year-old will go up against a Falcons run defense allowing just 3.8 yards per carry this season. After being out-touched by Cam Akers in Week 7, Mattison reverted back to the role fantasy managers were used to in the first half of the season, as the Boise State product led the Minnesota backfield out-touching Akers 17 to 10. It remains to be seen what the Minnesota offense will look like without Kirk Cousins (Achilles) under center, but there could be an opportunity for an increased workload for Mattison with an inexperienced signal-caller.

  • Alexander Mattison Inefficient In Week 8

    Headshot for Alexander Mattison

Minnesota Vikings running back Alexander Mattison carried the ball 16 times for 31 yards and added one reception for two yards in the team's 24-10 victory over the Packers. After being out-touched by Cam Akers in Week 7, Mattison regained his role as the lead back as he handled 17 touches to Akers' 10. He wasn't able to take advantage of a solid matchup in this one, but fantasy managers can feel somewhat confident in him moving forward if his heavy workload sustains itself in the second half of the season. However, Mattison looks like a touchdown-dependent RB2 option at best, and the Minnesota offense may struggle to find the end zone without Kirk Cousins under center.

  • Alexander Mattison A Low-End RB2 Versus Packers

    Headshot for Alexander Mattison

Minnesota Vikings running back Alexander Mattison will look to bounce back against the Green Bay Packers in Week 8 after totaling just 42 yards from scrimmage in Week 7. The Packers' run defense has been generous this season, allowing 4.5 yards per carry and six rushing touchdowns through six games. Despite the solid matchup, Mattison has some risk attached to him, as Cam Akers looks to be lurking in the Minnesota backfield. The former Los Angeles Ram out-carried Mattison in Week 7 and gained 61 yards from scrimmage on 12 touches. If Mattison and Akers continue to split opportunities evenly, it would make neither an attractive fantasy option. At best, the Boise State product is a low-end RB2/FLEX option in Week 8.

  • Alexander Mattison Cedes Work In Week 7

    Headshot for Alexander Mattison

Minnesota Vikings running back Alexander Mattison put forth another uninspiring showing in Monday's 22-17 win over the San Francisco 49ers, rushing eight times for 39 yards with two catches (three targets) for three yards. Mattison teased a big night was in store after rushing for 19 yards on the first play from scrimmage, but that hope never materialized. The 25-year-old just missed a short receiving touchdown in the third period, which forced Minnesota to settle for a field goal. Mattison has been granted plenty of opportunities as the Vikings' bell-cow back, but he's mostly squandered his promotion this year. Epitomizing fantasy's dead-zone mold, Mattison's RB2 life is gasping for air while working in rotation with Cam Akers, who out-touched him 12-10 Monday, in one of the NFL's pass-heaviest offenses. A Swiss cheese Green Bay Packers run defense in Week 8 offers a get-right spot for Mattison.

  • Alexander Mattison Draws Tough Matchup In Week 7

    Headshot for Alexander Mattison

Minnesota Vikings running back Alexander Mattison will look to get the run game back on track in Week 7 as the Vikings host the 49ers on Monday night. The Boise State product amassed just 44 rushing yards on 18 carries last week, as the Vikings failed to get anything going on the ground for the second consecutive game. With a matchup against the 49ers' defense who have allowed the sixth-fewest rushing yards this season, fantasy managers shouldn't get carried away with their expectations for the 25-year-old in this one. In a game script that figures to be in the 49ers' favor, Mattison is a risky option as he may need to fall into the end zone to salvage what could be another inefficient effort running the ball. He is a low-end RB2/FLEX option at best in Week 7.

Minnesota Vikings running back Alexander Mattison finished Week 6 with 18 carries for 44 yards and added four receptions for 28 yards in the team's 19-13 win over the Bears. Mattison was inefficient on the ground for the second straight outing in this one, as he averaged just 2.4 yards per carry after averaging 3.3 yards per carry in Week 5. Luckily, it seems the Vikings will continue to trust him with a hefty workload, so fantasy managers can continue to treat him as an RB2 option despite his inefficiency. The 25-year-old will get a downgrade in Week 7 with a tough matchup as the Vikings take on the 49ers.

Mattison salvaged his production with a touchdown last week, so he will look to get back to his involvement from Week 3 and 4, where he saw 25 and 18 opportunities respectively. The Boise State product has comfortably out-touched Cam Akers in the backfield up to this point, so fantasy managers can continue to treat him as the team's clear lead-back. Going up against a Bears defense that has allowed 3.7 yards per carry this season, Mattison may need a hefty workload to put up solid numbers in this one.

  • Alexander Mattison Salvages Fantasy Day With Touchdown

    Headshot for Alexander Mattison

Minnesota Vikings running back Alexander Mattison had a modest performance in Sunday's 27-20 loss to the Chiefs, totaling 46 yards on 10 touches with a receiving touchdown. Unfavorable game circumstances played a role, as the Vikings trailed early, leading to more passing situations. Cousins connected with Mattison for a nine-yard touchdown strike in the fourth quarter. While Mattison's efficiency had shown improvement in the last two weeks, it took a hit in Week 5, with an average of just over 3.0 yards per carry. While the volume of opportunities has been substantial for the Vikings' running back to start the season, he will need to deliver efficient performances consistently to sustain his workload. The upcoming game against the Chicago Bears provides a favorable opportunity for a rebound, where the Vikings might lean on the run if they secure a lead. Mattison remains a solid starting option for now, but he must minimize inefficient outings to maintain his role as the team's primary ball carrier.

    Headshot for Alexander Mattison

Minnesota Vikings running back Alexander Mattison will look to keep his strong stretch of play going into Week 5, as the Boise State product has rushed for 90+ yards in back-to-back games. Mattison has continued to handle the bulk of the backfield touches since Cam Akers arrived from the Rams, so fantasy managers can continue to treat him as the clear lead-back in the Minnesota offense. The matchup on Sunday doesn't play into Mattison's favor, as the Chiefs have allowed the 12th-fewest rushing yards this season. With the potential game script that could be seen in this one, the Vikings could go to a pass-heavy attack which we have seen plenty of in the past, bringing up the possibility of a light workload for Mattison. The 25-year-old is nothing more than an RB2 option this week.

Mattison has looked solid in the past two games and looks to be the clear No. 1 option in the Vikings backfield despite the acquisition of Cam Akers. He had a favorable matchup against a porous Panthers' run defense in this one, but fantasy managers should continue to count on him moving forward as he should be in for a sizeable workload. The 25-year-old looks to be a solid RB2 option in Week 5 in what could be a high-scoring matchup with the Chiefs.

The Chargers have allowed 211 rushing yards through two weeks, so the 25-year-old should have an easier time finding some rushing lanes on Sunday. He has averaged just 3.3 yards per carry so far this season, so he may be dependent on heavy volume and touchdown production to have a solid fantasy performance. Minnesota Vikings running back Alexander Mattison handled eight carries for 28 yards with three catches on six targets for 11 yards in Thursday's 34-28 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. Mattison lost another fumble in the fourth quarter, but was bailed out by an offsides penalty. The former third-round pick's lack of explosiveness has been well-documented within the fantasy community, but he was dealt a tough hand in this one from the get-go particularly with the Vikings trailing throughout the second half. Mattison's bell-cow role (44 snaps Thursday) remains rare in today's NFL, so should be in play as an RB2 in what could be a high-scoring Week 3 versus the Los Angeles Chargers, but he's hardly impressed to this point.

Minnesota Vikings running back Alexander Mattison will look to start his first season as the Vikings' lead-back on the right foot against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 1. The Buccaneers have had a stingy run defense in seasons past, however, they were a middling run-stopping unit in 2022 giving up the 15th most rushing yards and 4.5 yards per carry. Mattison takes over the RB1 role in Minnesota left behind by Dalvin Cook, so he can be treated as a solid fantasy option due to volume alone. Mattison has proven he can be productive when called upon as a starter, as he has averaged 94 rushing yards when he plays over 50% of the snaps.
