Offseason In Review: Kansas City Chiefs

As partially chronicled on Netflix, the Chiefs secured their second Super Bowl championship in four seasons. Patrick Mahomes is now 3-for-5 in Super Bowl appearances as a starter and is the first quarterback since Otto Graham (1950-55) to begin an NFL career with five straight conference championship games. The two-time MVP gutted through a high […]

Kansas City Chiefs wide receivers Kadarius Toney (knee) and Richie James (knee) both practiced in full on Wednesday and have been cleared to play in Thursday night's regular season opener against the visiting Detroit Lions. Tight end Travis Kelce (knee) is questionable after hyperextending his knee in practice on Tuesday, so there could be more opportunity for the Chiefs receivers, although KC is expected to roll with Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Skyy Moore and Justin Watson in most three-wide sets to open the year. Toney's athleticism gives him plenty of fantasy upside in his first year in KC, but he'll have to be able to stay on the field and won't have an every-down role right away. Fantasy managers are best off looking in another direction than rolling with Toney or James in a flex spot in Week 1.

Richie James Upgrades To Full Practice

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Richie James (knee) was upgraded to a full practice participant on Tuesday after he was listed as limited on Monday. Barring a setback on Wednesday, James should be fully ready to go for the Week 1 regular season opener on Thursday night against the visiting Detroit Lions. Kadarius Toney (knee) is also expected to be available, but he'll likely have a limited role after having surgery for a torn meniscus this summer. With tight end Travis Kelce (knee) now in doubt for the season opener, the 28-year-old James could have an expanded role behind Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Skyy Moore and Justin Watson to kick off the season. Still, James is more of a long shot as a fantasy lineup option with Rashee Rice and Justyn Ross also available.

Richie James Limited On First Injury Report

The Kansas City Chiefs listed wide receiver Richie James (knee) as a limited practice participant on Monday on their first injury report of the 2023 season heading into Thursday night's Week 1 matchup against the Detroit Lions. Along with James, Kadarius Toney (knee) was limited, but we expect both pass-catchers to suit up on Thursday night. The 27-year-old James put up career-highs in catches (57), targets (70), receiving yards (569) and touchdowns (four) in his lone season with the New York Giants in 2022. He's now operating in one of the best offenses in the league, but he's probably not going to be a worthwhile weekly fantasy contributor unless injuries open up playing time ahead of him on KC's depth chart.

Richie James Has Been Impressive

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Richie James, a six-year veteran, was one of the team's most impressive players during training camp this summer. The Chiefs will throw the ball plenty, and James looks to be a reliable option for quarterback Patrick Mahomes. The 27-year-old has the talent to be an effective slot receiver alongside Skyy Moore this year. James can also provide a fantasy boost on special teams, as he's currently the team's top punt returner. He's an intriguing late-round flier in deep fantasy leagues, especially considering that Kadarius Toney has had a tough time staying on the field due to injuries early in his career. James led the New York Giants in 2022 with a career-high 57 catches for 569 yards and five touchdowns, so if he gets the opportunity, he could pop back up on the fantasy radar.

Richie James Corrals 43-Yard Pass On Sunday

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Richie James caught two of three targets for 44 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 26-24 preseason loss to the New Orleans Saints. The 27-year-old made his mark in the second quarter, beating Saints defensive back Alontae Taylor for a 43-yard reception on a well-placed Blaine Gabbert deep ball. James then got loose near the corner of the end zone for a one-yard score to cap off the drive. The former seventh-round pick was one of 2022's catch rate leaders at WR with 57 receptions on 70 targets (81.4% clip) for the New York Giants, and Sunday's performance can only bode well for James' playing time going forward. With Kadarius Toney (knee) not a lock for Week 1, fantasy managers will want to monitor James throughout the preseason and if he can carve out a slot role behind presumed starter Skyy Moore.

Richie James' Spot Seems Secure

Unless something drastically changes this summer, Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Richie James' spot on the roster appears pretty secure. He is the primary option for punt returner when the Chiefs start the preseason, and he has established a solid connection with quarterback Patrick Mahomes. "You can tell he's been in other offenses," offensive coordinator Matt Nagy said of James. "Some of these wideouts, you know when they have a feel and they know the timing with the quarterback. They understand the defense, they know when to speed up their route, they know when to slow down their route, they know how to play in zone. He's got that. I'm excited to see what he does this preseason." The 27-year-old led the Giants in catches in 2022 and could be in line for a bigger role if Kadarius Toney (knee) isn't ready for Week 1.

Richie James Likes Where He's At In Kansas City

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Richie James, who led all New York Giants receivers with 57 catches last year, likes his situation with his new team after inking a one-year deal this offseason. "It's very similar offenses," James said. "And you got the smartest and the greatest head coach you can possibly ask for." "Think he's a versatile guy, and he also does punt returns too. So he can take some pressure off K.T. (Kadarius Toney) or Skyy (Moore) or whoever's back there. Just having another guy is something we think is a plus," general manager Brett Veach said. Special teams coach Dave Toub said on June 1 that James was "definitely in the mix" for the team's role of starting punt returner. The 27-year-old could have a chance to carve out a role in the slot alongside Skyy Moore, but it's more of a long shot that he'll put up numbers similar to what he did last year.
