Samaje Perine Hard To Trust In Week 3

Denver Broncos running back Samaje Perine played half of the offensive snaps in the Week 2 loss to the Washington Commanders, but he had only four touches for seven yards to show for it. Fantasy managers envisioned Perine having a much bigger role in Denver's backfield with the team easing Javonte Williams in after his ACL and LCL tears last year. The 28-year-old isn't going to just go away, but it's fair to wonder if he's a worthwhile RB3/flex play moving forward, even in a great matchup in Week 3 against the Miami Dolphins, who have been a top-five matchup for opposing RBs through two weeks. Perine should have a better game this Sunday on the road, but you also might have better upside flex options.

Samaje Perine An Afterthought In Week 2 Loss

Denver Broncos running back Samaje Perine was supposed to be sharing a bigger part of the backfield workload early in his first season in Denver as the team eased backfield mate Javonte Williams in after his ACL and LCL tears in Week 4 of 2022. But in the Week 2 loss to the Washington Commanders, Perine had just one carry for four yards and caught three of his four targets for 20 yards in the 35-33 loss at home. Rookie Jaleel McLaughlin had as many carries as Perine and took his handoff five yards to paydirt. In the season opener last week, Perine saw 12 touches for 78 yards, so this was a big-time disappointment. The full expectation is that Williams will eventually gain even more work in the Broncos' backfield, so Perine will enter the Week 3 matchup in Miami as tough to trust as an RB3/flex in deeper leagues.

Samaje Perine - Week 2 Outlook for Fantasy Football

Denver Broncos running back Samaje Perine had the exact same snap share (45 percent) as backfield mate Javonte Williams in the Week 1 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders. This was expected with the Broncos wanting to ease Williams in after he tore both his ACL and LCL in Week 4 of last year. Perine had 12 touches to Williams' 17, although Perine was more efficient with eight carries for 41 yards and four receptions for 37 yards. As the season wears on, Perine is expected to become less valuable to fantasy managers as Williams gains a bigger share of the backfield touches. However, he looked pretty explosive in the season opener and should still have a significant role as a runner and pass-catcher in Week 2 against the Washington Commanders this Sunday. Perine is still in play as an RB3/flex this weekend in fantasy, albeit in a less-than-stellar matchup.

Samaje Perine Averages Over Five Yards Per Carry

In running back Samaje Perine's debut with the Denver Broncos in Week 1 of the regular season on Sunday against the division-rival Las Vegas Raiders, he was extremely efficient on the ground in a 17-16 loss. Perine had eight carries for 41 yards (5.1 yards per tote) while catching all four of his targets for a team-high 37 receiving yards. The 27-year-old had five fewer carries than teammate Javonte Williams, but if he can continue to stay involved in the passing attack, he should have standalone fantasy value as a flex consideration as the Broncos ease Williams back from a torn ACL and LCL that he suffered in Week 4 in 2022. Note: Top wideout Jerry Jeudy (hamstring) was inactive on Sunday and tight end Greg Dulcich injured his leg and didn't return.

Samaje Perine A Worthwhile RB3/Flex Play

Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton said that running back Javonte Williams (knee) is "going to play a big role" in Week 1 against the Las Vegas Raiders, so where does that leave Samaje Perine? Williams has had an impressive recovery after tearing his ACL and LCL in Week 4 in 2022, but all signs point to the Broncos easing him back into the offense. Williams is going to be active, but at best, this might be a 50-50 split in Week 1, and Perine could easily have flex appeal all year long. It's no secret Payton has liked to rotate his RBs over the years. If Perine out-snaps Williams in Week 1 against a Raiders defense that allowed the fifth-most half-PPR points per game to RBs last year, he'll have RB2 upside on Sunday. Perine's fantasy value is going to be the highest early in the year, so start him if you drafted him.

Broncos Likely To Limit RB Javonte Williams' Workload Upon Return

The Broncos’ offense will have a new play-caller in the form of head coach Sean Payton as well as new faces up front. One of the most signficant factors in the team’s ability to rebound from last season’s struggles, though, will be the play of lead running back Javonte Williams. The 23-year-old’s second season in Denver was […]
Sep 3 · Pro Football Rumors Broncos Samaje Perine Javonte WilliamsSamaje Perine Could Have A Big Role For A While

ESPN's Dan Graziano thinks that Denver Broncos running back Samaje Perine could be the team's lead running back for a good chunk of the 2023 season. Javonte Williams (knee) has been practicing and even saw some action in the preseason after suffering a torn ACL in Week 4 of 2022. However, people close to the situation are saying that Williams needs to be eased in. Denver signed Perine as a complement to Williams once Williams got healthy. But if Perine shows he can handle early down work, it could allow the Broncos to take their time with Williams and bring him along slowly until he's fully healed. On 95 carries with the Cincinnati Bengals in 2022, Perine ran for 394 yards and two touchdowns. The 27-year-old is a nice RB3/flex to target in fantasy drafts this weekend.

The Denver Broncos held Javonte Williams (knee) out of their first preseason contest on Friday night against the Arizona Cardinals as he continues to recover from a season-ending knee injury last year. As a result, offseason signing Samaje Perine acted as the lead back for the starting offense and finished with a team-high six carries for 26 yards (4.3 yards per carry). He ripped off a long gain of 11 yards and was unable to haul in his only target in the passing game. The Broncos offense didn't really do anything impressive until their fourth drive, which culminated in a 21-yard touchdown pass to receiver Jerry Jeudy. Although Williams appears to be on track to be ready for Week 1 of the regular season against the Raiders, all indications are that Perine will be heavily involved early on to help ease Williams back. It gives the 27-year-old some RB3/4 appeal in fantasy drafts as Williams' handcuff.

Javonte Williams Running Just Fine

Denver Broncos running back Javonte Williams (knee) suffered a torn ACL in Week 4 of the 2022 season but surprisingly did not start training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list and is already practicing in late July. Hopefully, this isn't a case of rushing a player back from a major injury too soon, but Zac Stevens, a Broncos beat reporter, said Williams is running "just fine" at practice. The team might opt to ease Williams into action during the 2023 campaign, so expect the third-year back to share touches with Samaje Perine early on. Either way, fantasy managers who got a massive discount on Williams in early fantasy drafts will likely see a great return on investment.

Broncos RB Javonte Williams Expects To Be Cleared For Training Camp

A busy Broncos offseason has been marked by several changes on the field and the sidelines, but one of its other top storylines has been the recovery process of Javonte Williams. The team’s lead running back provided the latest optimistic remarks on that front. Williams spoke about his rehab from the torn ACL and LCL […]
Jul 9 · Pro Football Rumors Broncos Javonte Williams Melvin Gordon Samaje PerineJavonte Williams Feels "Ready To Go"

Denver Broncos running back Javonte Williams (knee) recently spoke to reporters at teammate Patrick Surtain II's football camp. He revealed he's continuously worked with the Broncos' training staff since the conclusion of the offseason program. Even better, Williams is optimistic he'll be cleared in time for training camp while adding he feels "ready to go." The 23-year-old has rushed for 1,107 yards and four touchdowns since entering the league in 2021. He also had 59 catches, three of which resulted in a trip to the end zone. However, Williams played four games before a torn ACL abruptly ended his 2022 season. But It appears more likely than before that the 2021 No. 35 overall pick may avoid a stint on the injured list. Yet, that doesn't mean he won't miss games to start the regular season, meaning Samaje Perine may remain in line to see an enhanced role early on.

Offseason In Review: Denver Broncos

While last season marked the Broncos’ sixth straight sub-.500 campaign, it was easily the most memorable letdown for the franchise during its post-Super Bowl 50 swoon. Denver’s attempt to pair blockbuster trade acquisition Russell Wilson and first-time head coach Nathaniel Hackett backfired spectacularly, with the latter joining Urban Meyer (2021) and Pete McCulley (49ers, 1978) […]
