Carson Wentz Doesn't Plan On Retiring

According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, free-agent quarterback Carson Wentz doesn't intend on calling it quits anytime soon. The Commanders recently released the veteran signal-caller, saving the team just over $26 million against the salary cap. Wentz is coming off one of the worst years of his career, finishing the 2022-23 campaign with 1,755 yards, 11 touchdowns, and nine interceptions (eight games). Another team will likely be interested in picking up the 26-year-old this offseason, especially since he's open to any role. However, his days as a productive quarterback are probably over, so he won't see much interest from fantasy managers.

The Washington Commanders released quarterback Carson Wentz on Monday, which saves the team $26.17 million against the 2023 salary cap. After another disappointing year for Wentz in D.C. in 2022, he will be on the open market this offseason. The 30-year-old signal-caller completed only 62.3 percent of his passes for a career-low 1,755 yards, 11 touchdowns and nine interceptions in eight games (seven starts) and was benched late in the year for Taylor Heinicke. Wentz also missed some time due to a finger injury in the middle of the season. Seven years into his career, Wentz could be headed for backup QB duties in 2023 for whichever team he signs with. In Washington, Heinicke and Sam Howell are set to compete for starting duties, but the Commanders could also bring in more QB competition via free agency, trade or the draft.

Washington Commanders quarterback Carson Wentz might have taken his last snap with the team. According to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com, the Commanders' recent discussion about the quarterback position "reinforces the fact Washington and Wentz will probably part ways." During his lone season with the Commanders, Wentz played in just eight games due to a combination of injury and poor performance. He went 2-5 with a 62.3 percent completion rate, 1,755 yards, 11 touchdowns, and nine interceptions. The Commanders would recoup a whopping $26.2 million in cap space by releasing Wentz, which seems like the most probable outcome at this point. Doing so would leave the team with Sam Howell as its starting quarterback but could also put them in the running to re-sign Taylor Heinicke.

Carson Wentz And Logan Thomas Could Be Released This Offseason

Washington Commanders quarterback Carson Wentz and tight end Logan Thomas were mostly ineffective during the 2022-2023 campaign and are reportedly in danger of being released by the team this offseason. Although both battled with injuries throughout the year, neither was overly productive when healthy. The Commanders could save over $26 million by cutting ties with Wentz and almost $5.2 million by releasing Thomas. Sam Howell is currently expected to start under center for Washington next season, making a split with Wentz all the more inevitable. If they choose to move on from the 31-year-old Thomas, the Commanders would be left with John Bates, Armani Rogers, and Cole Turner at tight end.

When asked about the team's plan at quarterback and whether QB Carson Wentz will be with the organization in 2023, Washington Commanders general manager Martin Mayhew said, "We're currently working through all that." In his first year in D.C., Wentz struggled with injuries and inconsistent performances, posting a 62.3% completion percentage, a career-low 1,755 passing yards, 11 touchdowns and nine interceptions in just eight games played (seven starts). The 30-year-old will have a $26.1 million salary cap hit in 2023 if he sticks on the roster. He has no dead cap hit either, so there's a very good chance Wentz will find himself on the open market this offseason. If that happens, Sam Howell and Taylor Heinicke could compete for the starting job, depending on who else the organization brings in at the position.

Washington Commanders quarterback Carson Wentz completed 16-of-28 passes for 143 yards and three interceptions along with three carries for seven yards and a touchdown in Sunday's loss to the Cleveland Browns. Week 17 marked Wentz's official return to the starting role for the Commanders and boy did he disappoint. Instead of providing a boost for their stagnant offense, the seventh-year pro only made them worse with his poor play and questionable decision-making. With this dreadful performance, Wentz's starting spot should be far from locked in for Washington's Week 18 matchup against the Dallas Cowboys.
