  • Taylor Heinicke To Serve As Desmond Ridder's Backup

Atlanta Falcons quarterback Taylor Heinicke said that his mindset is to be "the best backup I can be to Desmond Ridder." The Falcons were clear that Heinicke would be the backup when they signed him in free agency this week. "They drafted (Ridder) high for a reason," Heinicke said. The 30-year-old Heinicke signed for two years and $14 million with $6.32 million guaranteed, so he's one of the better-paid backup signal-callers in the league. Ridder was a third-round selection last year and made four starts in his rookie season, throwing for only 708 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions on 115 passing attempts. He'll enter Week 1 as their starter, but the 23-year-old may need to play well to hold off Heinicke.

  • Falcons Signing Taylor Heinicke

The Atlanta Falcons are signing former Washington Commanders quarterback Taylor Heinicke to a two-year deal worth up to $20 million on Tuesday, according to a source. The Falcons already have Desmond Ridder as their starter, but Heinicke receive top-end backup money with plenty of starting experience in his time in D.C. Atlanta let Marcus Mariota go after the 2022 season, so the 29-year-old Heinicke will replace him in the QB room in 2023. Heinicke is an Atlanta native and could also push Ridder for the starting job during the season if he struggles to perform. Over the last two years in Washington, Heinicke played in 25 games (24 starts) and completed 64 percent of his passes for 5,278 yards, 32 touchdowns and 21 interceptions.

  • Commanders Considering Bringing Back Taylor Heinicke

Washington Commanders quarterback Taylor Heinicke is set to be an unrestricted free agent this summer. The organization appears committed to Sam Howell as their quarterback for the 2023 season. Despite that, head coach Ron Rivera mentioned that they'd like to bring back Heinicke next season. The 29-year-old would serve as the backup to Howell, but will probably only find backup opportunities elsewhere. That being said, it's unlikely Heinicke will have fantasy value heading into next season.

  • Taylor Heinicke To Start, Sam Howell To Play In Week 18

The Washington Commanders are expected to turn back to quarterback Taylor Heinicke as the starter under center in the Week 18 regular season finale against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday, but rookie Sam Howell is also slated to play in the game, marking the NFL debut for the fifth-rounder, according to a source. Per The Washington Post's Nicki Jhabvala, Howell is taking the first repetitions in practice on Wednesday. Carson Wentz got the start in Week 17 and didn't deliver, tossing three interceptions in a loss to the Cleveland Browns. The Commanders have nothing left to play for this year, so they'd like to get a small look at Howell. With both Heinicke and Howell set to play this weekend, neither will be worth looking at in DFS lineups or in season-long leagues.

  • Carson Wentz To Start Over Taylor Heinicke In Week 17

Washington Commanders head coach Ron Rivera has decided that quarterback Carson Wentz will start in Week 17 against the Cleveland Browns, according to sources. Taylor Heinicke will head back to the bench. Wentz broke his right ring finger in October and lost the starting job to Heinicke when he returned from Injured Reserve, but the Commanders are now 7-7-1 and are in danger of missing the playoffs if they continue to lose. Wentz started the first six games before getting hurt, completing 62.1 percent of his 232 attempts for 1,489 yards, 10 touchdowns and six interceptions for a QB rating of 84.1. The 29-year-old hasn't looked much better than Heinicke in 2022 and should be considered a low-end QB2 for those in superflex leagues. The return of Wentz should be good news for rookie receiver Jahan Dotson, who developed strong chemistry with Wentz over the summer.

  • Commanders Uncertain About Starter For Week 17

Washington Commanders quarterback Taylor Heinicke was benched during the fourth quarter of their loss to the San Francisco 49ers. He threw for 166 yards with two touchdowns and one interception before hitting to the sideline. Carson Wentz came in and immediately threw a touchdown, which is going to hurt Heinicke's chances of remaining the starter. It sounds like the organization plans to make a decision on their starter on Wednesday. Wentz is certainly better from a talent perspective, but is also more turnover prone. Regardless, Week 17 is going to be a must-win game for the Commanders against the Cleveland Browns.

  • Taylor Heinicke Throws Two Touchdowns, Gets Benched

Washington Commanders quarterback Taylor Heinicke completed 13-of-18 passes for 166 yards and two touchdowns along with one interception and a lost fumble in Saturday's loss to the San Francisco 49ers. The 29-year-old came into Week 16 with rumors of his eventual benching circulating media coverage. However, despite the added pressure, he came out sharp against San Francisco's vaunted defense in the first half. Unfortunately, things fell off when the eighth-year pro lost a fumble and threw an interception on back-to-back possessions in the fourth quarter. That sealed Heinicke's fate as former starter Carson Wentz replaced him for the rest of the game. With his benching, it remains to be seen if Heinicke will start another game for the Commanders this season.
