  • Marcus Mariota Might Not Make Roster

    Headshot for Marcus Mariota

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Marcus Mariota was brought in this offseason to be the backup to Jalen Hurts this upcoming season. However, the 29-year-old might've played his way off the 53-man roster, according to Mike Garafolo. Rookie quarterback Tanner McKee has exceeded expectations and earned praise from the coaching staff. On Thursday, McKee completed 19-of-34 passing attempts for 158 yards during the preseason finale. Honestly, McKee might've done enough to overtake Mariota for the backup gig. The Eagles must decide how much faith they truly have in Mariota to play a role on this team in case Hurts does go down.

  • Marcus Mariota Has Rough Outing In Second Preseason Game

    Headshot for Marcus Mariota

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Marcus Mariota completed 9-of-17 passes for 86 yards, threw an interception, and took one carry for five yards during the team's 18-18 tie with the Cleveland Browns. The Eagles' offense struggled throughout most of the first half with the veteran under center, scoring just three of their 18 points. While Philadelphia gave Mariota $5 million this offseason, with the chance to earn $8 million, he has not been overly impressive through two preseason games. Tanner McKee had a much better night but was playing against the third-string defense. We will unlikely see Jalen Hurts step onto the field next week against Indianapolis, but even if he does, Mariota should see another two-quarters of play.

  • Marcus Mariota Plays Two Series In Preseason Start

    Headshot for Marcus Mariota

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Marcus Mariota completed 7-of-11 passes for 58 yards and added four carries for 29 yards during the team's preseason loss to the Baltimore Ravens. The 29-year-old made a few clutch plays, extending the first drive on 3rd and 13, where he scrambled past the first down marker on a broken pass play. Aside from this, the veteran did nothing special and looked the part of a solid NFL backup. Most of the starters were resting for the Eagles Saturday night, but Mariota did the most with what he had and led Philadelphia into scoring range on both drives. We should see more of Mariota over the next couple of weeks, but his job is secure as the Eagles' clear backup to starting quarterback Jalen Hurts.

  • Marcus Mariota Has Struggled With Eagles

    Headshot for Marcus Mariota

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Marcus Mariota isn't going anywhere as the backup to Jalen Hurts, but he has struggled mightily so far in training camp. Sloppy interceptions and tuck-and-running have been commonplace this summer, along with wayward incompletions. Nick Foles looked terrible during the summer of 2017, but the Eagles probably want to see more from Mariota, who was a former No. 2 overall pick. The 29-year-old will be given plenty of rope while being on his third different NFL team in the last three seasons. He's still learning the playbook and will hopefully look better toward the end of the preseason and camp. Outside of Hurts and Mariota, the Eagles have rookie Tanner McKee and Ian Book in their QB room.

  • Offseason In Review: Philadelphia Eagles

    Headshot for Dan Arnold

Like Doug Pederson, Nick Sirianni led the Eagles to a Super Bowl in his sophomore HC effort. The endings proved different, as Philadelphia’s defense could not stop Patrick Mahomes in a shootout, but the Eagles went from 9-8 in 2021 to the NFC’s best team. While this represents considerable progress after the team did not […]
