  • Saints Rework Contracts Of Derek Carr, Nathan Shepherd

    Headshot for Derek Carr

After reworking Erik McCoy‘s contract earlier this week, the Saints continue to carve out cap space. According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the Saints have restructured quarterback Derek Carr‘s contract, opening around $23MM in cap space. Meanwhile, ESPN’s Field Yates adds that the team also restructured defensive tackle Nathan Shepherd‘s deal, clearing another $3MM in space. […]

  • Saints Restructure Derek Carr's Contract

    Headshot for Derek Carr

The New Orleans Saints restructured quarterback Derek Carr's contract on Friday for salary cap purposes, a move that was expected to give the team around $23 million in cap relief for the 2024 season, according to sources. Carr is due $30 million in base salary this year, so converting a portion of that into a signing bonus provides immediate savings. The 32-year-old veteran signal-caller is under contract with the Saints through 2026. In his first year in the Big Easy, he threw for 3,878 yards, 25 touchdowns and eight interceptions while amazingly not missing a single game despite suffering multiple concussions, cracked ribs and a shoulder sprain. Carr is as tough as they come and can give fantasy managers low-end QB1 lines on occasion, but he's best drafted as a fantasy backup.

  • Saints Working To Hire Klint Kubiak As Offensive Coordinator

    Headshot for Derek Carr

The New Orleans Saints are reportedly working to hire San Francisco 49ers passing-game specialist Klint Kubiak as their new offensive coordinator, according to sources. Kubiak would join the Saints' coaching staff after he coaches his final game with the 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII on Sunday, Feb. 11, against the Kansas City Chiefs. No deal can be finalized until after the Super Bowl. The 36-year-old becomes the latest Kyle Shanahan disciple to go elsewhere after having success with the Niners. He's the son of former Broncos and Texans head coach Gary Kubiak, who led Denver to a Super Bowl 50 win in 2015. Klint will be replacing Pete Carmichael, who spend the last 15 seasons as the Saints' OC. He has experience as the primary play-caller and will now work with an offense that includes Derek Carr, Alvin Kamara and Chris Olave.

  • Saints Expected To Restructure Derek Carr's Contract

    Headshot for Derek Carr

New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr is set to count $35.7 million against the salary cap in 2024, and his contract presents an opportunity for the team to create some more cap space by March 13, the start of the new league year. The Saints are expected to restructure Carr's contract by that date, which would effectively tie the team to Carr for at least the next two seasons. Leaving Carr's contract alone would have allowed them to move on from Carr next year with a relatively small financial penalty. The 32-year-old is set to make $30 million in base salary in 2024. If the Saints choose the most aggressive route and convert all but the veteran minimum to a signing bonus, they could lower Carr's cap hit in 2024 to around $14.2 million, which would clear more than $21 million in immediate cap relief. Carr got better down the stretch in 2023 and finished his first year in New Orleans with 3,878 passing yards, 25 TDs and eight picks while playing through a sprained AC joint in his shoulder, fractured ribs and two concussions.

The Saints are looking for a offensive coordinator after firing Pete Carmichael after 15 seasons as the team's offensive coordinator. In addition to Pitcher and Waldron, the Saints have also requested permission to speak with Los Angeles Rams quarterbacks coach Zac Robinson for the offensive-coordinator position. Former Las Vegas Raiders and Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Jon Gruden could also be a candidate to either join the Saints' coaching staff or be the team's next play-caller given his familiarity with quarterback Derek Carr.

  • Saints Fire Offensive Coordinator Pete Carmichael

    Headshot for Derek Carr

The New Orleans Saints fired offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael on Tuesday, according to sources. Carmichael has been the team's offensive coordinator since 2009, continuing in the role through the transition from Sean Payton to current head coach Dennis Allen in 2022. In addition to Carmichael, the Saints have parted ways with senior offensive assistant Bob Bicknell and wide receivers coach Kodi Burns. The Saints offense finished the season strong, but overall they were pretty inconsistent in 2023 under quarterback Derek Carr. New Orleans ranked ninth in the league in points per game (23.6), 14th in total yards per game (337.2), 11th in passing yards per game (234.7) and 21st in rushing yards per game (102.5) over 17 games.

  • Dennis Allen Expects To Return In 2024

    Headshot for Derek Carr

New Orleans Saints head coach Dennis Allen told reporters on Monday that he expects to return in 2024. Allen also believes there is no "fracture" in the locker room following the controversial conclusion to the team's 48-17 rout of the division-rival Atlanta Falcons in Week 18, which saw backup quarterback Jameis Winston call an audible for a rushing play to Jamaal Williams that ran up the score late. Despite one of the league's most favorable strengths of schedule entering the year, the 9-8 Saints missed the playoffs. Allen will enter 2024 with a mediocre 16-18 record during his two seasons in the Big Easy, but the squad did win four of their final five games of the 2023 campaign to close out the year on a positive note. After being unable to win three consecutive games at any point this season, New Orleans will seek more consistency with starting signal-caller Derek Carr figuring to be at the helm again next year.

New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr is riding a four-game streak in which he has thrown for multiple touchdown passes. In a pivotal Week 18 matchup with divisional rival Atlanta, Carr will look to remain hot. The Falcons have allowed the 13th-most (17.5) fantasy points per game to opposing quarterbacks this season, giving Carr a softer secondary to work against. Averaging 244.7 passing yards per game over his last three starts, Carr will look to remain strong in what could be his final start of the season if New Orleans does not get the help it needs to reach the playoffs.

  • Derek Carr Playing Well As He Gets Healthy

    Headshot for Derek Carr

New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr has recently put together his best stretch of play this year, and it's no coincidence that it has come while being able to avoid injuries that have plagued him for much of the season. Heading into Week 18 against the Atlanta Falcons, the Saints have won three of their last four games and Carr has gone 92-for-126 (73 percent) for 853 yards, 10 touchdowns and two interceptions. He's been sacked five times and hasn't fumbled. "He's probably as healthy as he's been in a while, and so, you feel his accuracy in his passing, you feel more comfortable in the pocket," head coach Dennis Allen said Monday. Avoiding turnovers it the most important thing for the veteran signal-caller. With several high-end QB options potentially being rested in the regular season finale this weekend, Carr is setting up as a high-end QB2/low-end QB1 option for fantasy managers against Atlanta.

New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr has churned out his best two fantasy performances of the season over the last two weeks, finishing as the QB7 and QB3 respectively. This week in a must-win game against Tampa Bay, Carr should continue his hot streak. The Buccaneers surrender the sixth-most fantasy points per game to opposing quarterbacks, creating a favorable matchup for the Saints' signal caller. New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr is coming off of his best fantasy performance of the season after logging a season-high three passing touchdowns against the New York Giants. On a short week, Carr draws the Los Angeles Rams and returns top target Chris Olave (ankle). New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr bounced back from a rough stretch in a game-managing role in Week 15's 24-6 win over the New York Giants. On a day that he was missing top target Chris Olave (ankle), Carr completed 23-of-28 passes for 218 yards and three touchdowns. The Saints controlled the game for the entire second half, as Carr led two long touchdown drives to continually grow the lead. • Derek Carr Should Not Be Started In Week 15

    Headshot for Derek Carr

New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr is off the injury report for the first time in a few weeks, but the report remains full of his weapons. Carr has not scored over 15 fantasy points since Week 9 and has not scored over 20 fantasy points once this entire season. The New York Giants have quietly surrendered the twelfth-least amount of fantasy points to opposing quarterbacks, making this a sneaky bad matchup for Carr. Add in the fact that Chris Olave (ankle) is trending in the wrong direction to play this week, and Carr is easily avoidable. Look elsewhere for Week 1 of the fantasy playoffs.

New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr (ribs, shoulder), who has been beat up with injuries as much as any player in the league this year, is not listed on the initial Week 15 injury report on Wednesday after practicing in full. The 32-year-old is as tough as they come, somehow not missing a game all year despite two concussions, ribs and shoulder injuries. Carr admitted earlier this week that he's played through several rib fractures in 2023. Despite all the health concerns this season, Carr has five 300-yard games, although he has only 13 touchdowns and seven interceptions to show for it in 13 games played. In a strong matchup in Week 15 against the New York Giants, Carr will remain an uninspiring low-end QB2 for fantasy managers with his supporting cast pretty banged up.

  • Derek Carr Has Suffered Three Rib Fractures This Year

    Headshot for Derek Carr

New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr told reporters after the Week 14 win over the Carolina Panthers that he has suffered three rib fractures this year. Carr has been one of the most beat up players in 2023, but he somehow has managed to play in every game. He entered Sunday's game after clearing the concussion protocol for the second time this year while also dealing with ribs and shoulder injuries. He's a tough dude, no doubt. Predictably, Carr's play has been up and down in his first year in New Orleans and he has been knocked out of multiple contests early. For fantasy purposes, he's extremely risky as a low-end QB2 and will probably continue to be, although he does have a juicy matchup at home in Week 15 against the New York Giants.

New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr (ribs, shoulder) overcame injuries to lead the team to a dominant 28-6 win over Carolina in Week 14. Carr completed 18-of-26 passes for 119 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. The yardage total marked Carr's lowest of the season in a game that he did not leave due to injury. Given that New Orleans controlled the entire game, there was never much reason to force passes which contributed to Carr's unimpressive statistical output. Carr will look to provide a more lucrative fantasy line next Sunday against the New York Giants.

  • Derek Carr Clears Concussion Protocol, Will Play Sunday

    Headshot for Derek Carr

New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr (concussion, ribs, shoulder) has cleared the league's concussion protocol and will start in Week 14 against the visiting Carolina Panthers on Sunday, according to a source. Carr was a full participant in practice on Friday and was cleared by an independent neurologist following practice. Seemingly getting hurt almost every week, the 32-year-old veteran signal-caller will be a shaky low-end QB2 in superflex leagues in a bad matchup if he is indeed active on Sunday morning. Not only are the Panthers tough against opposing QBs fantasy-wise, but most of the Saints' starting offensive skill players are listed as questionable on the final Week 14 injury report. There's also the risk of an in-game setback for Carr, who has already been in the concussion protocol twice in 2023.

  • Derek Carr Listed As Questionable

    Headshot for Derek Carr

The New Orleans Saints are listing quarterback Derek Carr (concussion, ribs, shoulder) as questionable for the Week 14 contest against the visiting Carolina Panthers on Sunday despite putting in a full practice on Friday. Carr is not yet out of the league's concussion protocol. Both Carr and backup Jameis Winston took snaps in practice this week. Fantasy managers should have a better idea on whether Carr will have a chance to play on Saturday, but either way, he's looking even more shaky as a low-end QB2 option in superflex leagues against a Panthers defense that hasn't been kind to opposing QBs this year. The 32-year-old Carr went for just 228 passing yards, no touchdowns and an interception in the first meeting with Carolina all the way back in Week 2. The Saints offense is incredibly beat up this week, as Chris Olave (illness), Taysom Hill (foot, hand), Juwan Johnson (quadriceps) and Rashid Shaheed (thigh) have all joined Carr as questionable to play Sunday.

  • Derek Carr Practices Again Thursday

    Headshot for Derek Carr

Dealing with three separate injuries, New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr (concussion, rib, shoulder) was able to practice on a limited basis for the second straight day on Thursday. This isn't Carr's first concussion of the year, which makes the fact that he's practicing at all a little surprising. It doesn't mean the 32-year-old will be cleared to play in Week 14 against the Carolina Panthers, though. Carr has eclipsed 300 yards passing in five games in 2023 but has only 11 touchdowns to show for it and is seemingly getting hurt every week. If he's active on Sunday, he'll be a low-end QB2 for fantasy managers in a tough matchup against Carolina. In Week 2 against the Panthers, Carr threw for 228 yards, no touchdowns and one interception. If he cannot play, it will be turnover-happy Jameis Winston making the start at QB for the Saints.

Although it was only a limited session, it's still a positive development, considering the 32-year-old suffered a concussion in the Week 13 matchup with the Detroit Lions. Of course, he remains in concussion protocol, so he's not out of the woods just yet. Nonetheless, assuming Carr can play in Week 14, he's a viable option for most fantasy managers. But if he's not available, Jameis Winston would likely be under center.
