  • Broncos Haven't Received Calls On Russell Wilson

    Headshot for Russell Wilson

When asked about quarterback Russell Wilson's trade market this offseason, Denver Broncos general manager George Paton said he hasn't been contacted by any teams. Meanwhile, head coach Sean Payton said on Tuesday that a decision on Wilson's future with the team will come "in the next two weeks" before the start of free agency. Expectations are that Wilson will be released before the start of the new league year on March 13, which will cause Denver to carry an $85 million dead-money salary cap hit in 2024. The 35-year-old had a bounce-back season in 2023 in his second year with the team, but his fate seemed sealed when the Broncos benched him for the final two regular season games. Wilson didn't appear finished quite yet last year, but even a move to a better team in 2024 wouldn't ensure that he'd be a trustworthy QB1 in fantasy.

  • Broncos Surely To Add At Quarterback Position

    Headshot for Jarrett Stidham

The Denver Broncos are likely to soon move on from quarterback Russell Wilson, the veteran signal-caller who went 11-19 as their starting QB in the two seasons since his blockbuster trade from the Seattle Seahawks. Releasing Wilson would leave the Broncos with $85 million in dead money and also a gaping hole at a position that the team hasn't been able to successfully fill since Peyton Manning's retirement in 2016. Long-time backup Jarrett Stidham started the final two games in 2023, but Denver is surely to add more at the position this offseason. However, it remains to be seen if the Broncos will add to the position in free agency, through the draft, or via a trade. It's all on the table, but whichever direction they go, it's more likely than not that they'll be going cheap at QB in 2024.

  • Russell Wilson Not Expected Back In Denver

    Headshot for Russell Wilson

What the Denver Broncos decide to do with quarterback Russell Wilson this offseason is one of the biggest storylines in the NFL. The Broncos can keep him in the fold for 2024, knowing the quarterback room will be awkward after they benched him for the final two games of the season. Virtually no one around the NFL expects Wilson to return, though, since it would lock in $37 million in 2025 guarantees. They could pay him $37 million of 2024 guarantees to go away, knowing offsets will be minimal with prospective teams leveraging Denver's guaranteed money against him. It will be tough to trade him. The money paid to Wilson handcuffs a team that is probably going to be forced to go cheap at QB, either with veteran Jarrett Stidham, another veteran or a draft pick.

  • Broncos Decision On Russell Wilson Coming "Sooner Than Later"

    Headshot for Russell Wilson

Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton said that the team will decide on the future of quarterback Russell Wilson "sooner than later" as an important deadline related to his contract looms. The 35-year-old QB has a trigger in his contract that would guarantee his $37 million salary for 2025 if he's still on the roster on March 17. If the Broncos want to cut Wilson, they would be on the hook for $85 million in dead money as the result of future guarantees accelerating onto the 2024 salary cap. Denver could split the charges over two seasons via a post-June 1 release. The Broncos have the No. 12 pick in the upcoming NFL draft and could be looking for a new signal-caller after the team benched Wilson with two games left in 2023. Payton said the team is evaluating their QB options through a fresh lens and have yet to make any final decisions.

  • Broncos Expected To Hire Pete Carmichael

    Headshot for Russell Wilson

The Denver Broncos and head coach Sean Payton are expected to hire former New Orleans Saints offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael to an unspecified role on the offensive staff alongside offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi, another former Saints coach. Carmichael was fired by the Saints after the 2023 season following 15 years as their offensive coordinator. The 52-year-old spent four years as an offensive assistant with the Los Angeles Chargers before joining the Saints. He was promoted to offensive coordinator with the Saints in 2009 and helped the team win Super Bowl XLIV. Payton and Carmichael had some of the most productive offenses in NFL history with Drew Brees as their QB, but with Russell Wilson likely out the door this spring, they'll first need to address the QB position before thinking of contending in 2024.

  • Sean Payton Not Closing The Door On Return Of Russell Wilson

    Headshot for Russell Wilson

Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson bounced back from a disastrous 2022 season in 2023. The veteran completed over 66% of his passes for 3,070 yards, 26 touchdowns, and eight interceptions in 15 starts. However, the Broncos still benched him for the team's final two games, marking what looked to be the end of his time in Denver. However, head coach Sean Payton said Wilson has a chance to return in 2024, "That final decision has not been made," Payton said. Ultimately, this report should be taken with a grain of salt, as things have seemingly gotten ugly between the QB and the head coach. Headshot for Brandon Johnson

Denver Broncos wide receiver Brandon Johnson had four receptions on five targets for a team-high 88 receiving yards in Sunday's 27-14 loss to the division-rival Las Vegas Raiders in the Week 18 regular season finale. Johnson was utilized more in the final few weeks of the year with Courtland Sutton suffering a concussion in Week 16 and with the Broncos benching quarterback Russell Wilson for the final two games due to financial reasons. The 25-year-old pass-catcher concludes his second year in the NFL with 19 catches on 30 targets for 284 yards and four touchdowns in 13 games played. Unless the Broncos decide to trade one of Sutton or Jerry Jeudy this offseason, Johnson will most likely enter his third NFL season as valuable receiving depth for Denver and off the fantasy radar. The Broncos will also have a big question mark under center if they cut ties with Russell Wilson in March, as expected.

  • Russell Wilson Expected To Be Cut In March

    Headshot for Russell Wilson

Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson is expecting to be cut by the Broncos in March, according to league sources. Wilson has been starting for Denver for almost two months while knowing the organization would likely move on from him after this season. The team made it aware to Wilson's representation in late October that he would lose the starting job and be made inactive for the rest of the year if he didn't defer the injury guarantee of $37 million that he has for 2025. The 35-year-old had a nice bounce-back season in his second year in Denver in 2023, throwing for 3,070 yards, 26 touchdowns and eight interceptions, but it wasn't enough to lead the Broncos back to the postseason for the first time since the 2015 season. Jarrett Stidham will start in Weeks 17 and 18 against the Los Angeles Chargers and Las Vegas Raiders, respectively.

  • Broncos To Bench Russell Wilson For Final Two Games

    Headshot for Russell Wilson

The Denver Broncos will bench quarterback Russell Wilson for the final two games of the regular season, thus preserving their financial flexibility for the offseason, according to sources. Jarrett Stidham will now take over Denver's offense in Weeks 17 and 18 against the Los Angeles Chargers and Las Vegas Raiders. Wilson already has $39 million guaranteed in 2024, but he has an additional $37 million that would become guaranteed if he can't pass a physical by early March. Heading into Week 17, Wilson is the NFL's seventh-rated passer with 26 touchdowns and only eight interceptions. The 35-year-old was much better in 2023 than he was in his first year in Denver in 2022 and will finish his second year with the Broncos as a top-10 fantasy QB. Although Wilson was much better this year with head coach Sean Payton running the offense and avoided costly turnovers, he still had only two games with 300-plus passing yards.

He was without his No.1 option in wide receiver Courtland Sutton (concussion) for most of the game, as Sutton left the game early with an injury and did not return. The former Wisconsin Badger makes for a strong play in Week 17 against the Los Angeles Chargers, a team allowing the third-most fantasy points to opposing quarterbacks this season.

  • Russell Wilson Ranks As QB2 For Christmas Eve Game

    Headshot for Russell Wilson

Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson ranks as a high-end QB2 option in fantasy football ahead of his game against the New England Patriots on Christmas Eve. The Broncos are coming off a difficult game versus the Detroit Lions, though Wilson actually looked solid in that contest, completing 18 passes for 223 yards, one touchdown, and one turnover. He has thrown for at least one touchdown in every game this year and currently ranks as this season's QB13 in fantasy football. He gets a slightly softer matchup this week in the form of the Patriots, who have allowed 18 total touchdowns and just nine interceptions to opposing quarterbacks this year. With that said, the Patriots have allowed the eighth-fewest fantasy points to quarterbacks, so managers invested in Wilson's performance should temper their expectations.

  • Russell Wilson Underwhelms In Primetime Loss To Lions

    Headshot for Russell Wilson

Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson threw a touchdown and avoided interceptions in Week 15 against the Detroit Lions, but he also had a costly fumble in the 42-17 blowout loss on Saturday evening. All in all, he went 18-for-32 for 223 yards passing and also ran the ball seven times for six yards and an additional touchdown. The 35-year-old's lone touchdown pass went to Lil'Jordan Humphrey three yards out, and his TD scamper came on a one-yard sneak at the goal line in the fourth quarter with the game well out of hand. If not for garbage time with the team down multiple scores, Wilson probably wouldn't have topped 200 yards passing. Wilson has been great at avoiding turnovers in 2023, but his passing ceiling hasn't been very high, and that will probably continue in a Week 16 matchup at home against the New England Patriots on Christmas Eve next week.

  • Russell Wilson Has QB1 Streaming Appeal Against Detroit

    Headshot for Russell Wilson

Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson came just shy of the 20-point fantasy mark in the Week 14 win over the Los Angeles Chargers but has still reached 20 fantasy points in four of his last six games. He'll have a great chance to cash in as a QB1 streamer again in Week 15 as the team travels to Detroit to take on the Lions on Sunday night. The 35-year-old only has two 300-yard games in 2023 (in Weeks 2 and 3) but has a fantastic touchdown-to-interception ratio of 23 to eight on the year. Wilson won't have to worry about bad weather inside the dome on Saturday night and will be facing a Lions secondary that has been very generous this year, especially in the last five weeks, as they've allowed the fourth-most fantasy points per game (22.7) to QBs in that time, including 10 passing touchdowns. Wilson will have a solid floor in Week 15 and is worth considering as a low-end QB1 streamer for fantasy lineups.

  • Russell Wilson Throws Two More Touchdowns In Week 14 Win

    Headshot for Russell Wilson

Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson bounced back in a Week 14 win over the Los Angeles Chargers after throwing a season-high three interceptions last week. In the 24-7 win over the Bolts, Wilson went 21-for-33 for 224 yards, two touchdowns and an interception, adding six carries for five yards while being sacked twice for a loss of eight yards. His pick came on his first pass of the game, but he was able to put it behind him and should have had a third TD pass had receiver Jerry Jeudy gotten a second foot in the end zone in the second half. One of the 35-year-old's scores was a 46-yard bomb to favorite wideout Courtland Sutton. Wilson now has 23 touchdowns and only eight interceptions through 14 weeks in 2023. He'll once again be a low-end QB1 streaming option for fantasy managers in Week 15 against a Detroit Lions defense that is reeling.

  • Russell Wilson Has Great Bounce-Back Matchup In Week 14

    Headshot for Russell Wilson

Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson has a get-right matchup in Week 14's divisional clash against the Los Angeles Chargers, coming off one of his worst games of the year in the Week 13 loss to the Houston Texans, when he threw for 186 yards, one touchdown and a season-high three interceptions. It was a rare game in 2023 in which Wilson failed to take care of the football. Through 12 games, he has 21 TD passes and only seven interceptions, but he's gone over 300 yards just twice and not since Week 3. The 35-year-old signal-caller will be in play as a low-end QB1 in fantasy this weekend despite last week's down performance. The Chargers defense just posted a shutout of the Patriots, but they also have surrendered the second-most passing yards per game (265.8) in 2023 and have allowed the fourth-most fantasy points per game (19.3) to QBs.
