Trey Lance Shows Off New Mechanics

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance is finally healthy this offseason after rehabbing from both an ankle and finger injury last year, and he seemed to deliver the football with a tighter spiral while using a more efficient wind-up and release during organized team activities this week. Lance got the first crack at reps on the field on Tuesday, but Sam Darnold and Brandon Allen will get their chances as well. The 23-year-old former first-round pick hasn't really gotten a fair opportunity to prove he's the guy because of injuries, and Brock Purdy's (elbow) excellent rookie season has vaulted him into starter status entering 2023. The 49ers remain high on Lance, but unless Purdy isn't ready to go by Week 1, he'll be riding the pine in San Fran.

Trey Lance Has Made "Substantial Jumps" This Offseason

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan, general manager John Lynch and private quarterbacks coach Jeff Christensen think that quarterback Trey Lance is throwing the ball more efficiently than he was last spring. Christensen said Lance's biggest breakthrough came when he stood behind Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes and watched him throw. The former No. 3 overall pick in 2021, Lance has completed just 54.9% of his passes in his first two NFL seasons over four starts. Brock Purdy (elbow) is expected to be the team's starter in 2023 if he's healthy, but he's currently recovering, so Lance and Sam Darnold will see reps in spring practices. Injuries have played a big role in Lance's delivery, but he's fully healthy now and is looking to make things interesting in training camp this summer.

Trey Lance Looking Good During Offseason Workouts

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance (finger) suffered a hairline fracture of his right index finger in the 2021 preseason, and it proved to be a major setback that severely limited his throwing ability for more than a year, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan. The head coach said Lance's lower body is fine and he's been throwing the ball very well at the start of the offseason program because his finger is no longer an issue, either. "He was able to get such a better base in these last two months that I think Trey is the best that we've (seen) him right now," Shanahan said. Still, if he's healthy by the start of the regular season, Brock Purdy (elbow) is going to be the team's starter at QB. Lance, the third overall pick in 2021, could need a trade out of San Fran to regain fantasy appeal in single-year and dynasty/keeper leagues.

Trey Lance Changes Throwing Grip

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance (finger) was forced to change his throwing grip last season. The young signal-caller suffered a hairline finger fracture that never healed properly. Head coach Kyle Shanahan said Lance suffered the injury during the 2021 preseason and had to change everything he did with the football. The former No. 3 overall pick has experienced some bad luck early in his career. Despite that, he'll likely begin the season as the starter with Brock Purdy (elbow) still recovering. It's uncertain what the 49ers are going to do once Purdy and Lance are both healthy. Honestly, trading Lance seems like the best solution, but it remains to be seen what the 49ers decide to do.

49ers Think Highly Of All Three Quarterbacks

The San Francisco 49ers are extremely happy with all three of their quarterbacks -- Brock Purdy (elbow, Trey Lance and Sam Darnold -- heading into the 2023 season. "I do believe we have three quarterbacks talent-wise who are all capable of being franchise-like quarterbacks. But that's just capable. Brock's done that in his eight. And we have two other guys on our roster who we strongly believe can do that also." Purdy is expected to be ready for training camp this summer after having surgery on the UCL in his right elbow this offseason, and if fully healthy, he's expected to start under center in Week 1. Given San Fran's love for Darnold, there's a chance they trade Lance this summer to another QB-needy team. Lance's dynasty/keeper stock has fallen precipitously in the last year.

Brock Purdy On Track With Rehab

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy (elbow) is doing well rehabbing from his torn UCL that he suffered during the NFC Championship Game. Niners general manager John Lynch mentioned that Purdy will begin throwing in a few weeks. He's currently on track with his timetable, but this is a long recovery process. Purdy is expected to be the starting quarterback once he's healthy. However, it's unknown when exactly he'll be able to get back on the field. Head coach Kyle Shanahan said that Purdy could be out until Week 4. The assumption is that Trey Lance is going to start until Purdy is 100 percent healthy.

Trey Lance Could Open Season As No. 3 On QB Depth Chart

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport suggests that San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance could be the team's No. 3 QB when the 2023 season starts behind Brock Purdy (elbow) and Sam Darnold. It's why the Niners have considered trading the former No. 3 overall pick this offseason. Nothing is imminent right now, but there's a better chance that Lance is dealt in August if another team's QB goes down with an injury in training camp and Purdy appears to be on track to be ready for Week 1. Lance is only 22 years old, and although he hasn't had great injury luck, there surely are some teams out there that wouldn't mind taking him on to see what he can do with an opportunity. For now, Lance's stock in dynasty/keeper leagues continues to plummet.
