  • Brock Purdy Resumes Throwing, Remains Frontrunner To Start

    Headshot for Sam Darnold

Brock Purdy did end up beating early post-surgery projections. The second-year quarterback’s previously reported plan to throw this week is a go, and John Lynch said no setbacks emerged after the session. The 49ers will still be, understandably, proceeding cautiously with last year’s third-stringer-turned-starter. But Lynch said during a Sirius XM Radio appearance the team […]

  • 49ers "Incredibly Encouraged" By Brock Purdy's Progress

    Headshot for Brock Purdy

San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch said "the early returns are good" and that the 49ers are "incredibly encouraged" by quarterback Brock Purdy's (elbow) recovery after he had surgery to fix a torn UCL in his right elbow around three months ago. Purdy resumed throwing this week, and the team is hoping he will be ready for training camp and the regular season. In the meantime, Trey Lance has taken the first-team repetitions in offseason practices. Although Purdy seems to be on track in his recovery, Lynch said they will not rush him back to the lineup. There's still a chance he isn't fully cleared to play in Week 1 of the regular season, but when he's got the green light, Purdy will be San Fran's starter under center in 2023 after he thoroughly impressed in his rookie season in 2022.

  • Christian McCaffrey "Excited" About Season Ahead

    Headshot for Christian McCaffrey

San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffreyis looking forward to the season ahead. The 26-year-old spent his entire career in Carolina before he was traded to the Niners last season. He played well under head coach Kyle Shanahan, amassing 746 rushing yards, 464 receiving yards, and 10 touchdowns in 11 games. However, McCaffrey is confident he may be even more potent this season. "I'm definitely excited," said the former Panther during an appearance on The Rich Eisen Show. "It's nice being able to have an offseason under my belt where I can get comfortable with the details." McCaffrey was once a top fantasy option, but injuries slowed him down considerably. But if he can stay healthy, he has an excellent chance of finishing the year as the most productive fantasy back.

  • Dre Greenlaw Recovering From Finger Surgery

    Headshot for Dre Greenlaw

San Francisco 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw (thumb) had a minor procedure after last year to fix an injured thumb, and he's still working his way back, which is why he wasn't taking part in organized team activities this week. Once he's back to full health, Greenlaw expects to absorb everything new defensive coordinator Steve Wilks has to offer him. The former fifth-rounder in 2019 only has two career sacks to his name, but he's hoping to be used more as a blitzer in the new defensive scheme in 2023. In his four seasons in the Bay Area, the 26-year-old has recorded 326 tackles (217 solo), 13 tackles for loss, five QB hits, three interceptions (one returned for a touchdown), 10 passes defensed, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries (one for a TD) in 47 games (39 starts).

  • Elijah Mitchell Participating In OTAs

    Headshot for Elijah Mitchell

San Francisco 49ers running back Elijah Mitchell (groin) is participating in the team's organized team activities this week and ran with power in Tuesday's session, taking repetitions from the backfield as a pass-catcher. Mitchell also missed time last year due to knee injuries, but it looks like he's good to go as we get closer to the 2023 campaign. The 25-year-old's fantasy value took a big hit when the Niners traded for Christian McCaffrey in 2022, but Mitchell remained productive when he played, averaging 6.2 yards per carry. Mitchell will need to avoid injuries to remain on the fantasy radar, but even with CMC carrying the load, he'll at least be worth a late-round pick as a handcuff in San Fran's backfield.

  • Trey Lance Shows Off New Mechanics

    Headshot for Trey Lance

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance is finally healthy this offseason after rehabbing from both an ankle and finger injury last year, and he seemed to deliver the football with a tighter spiral while using a more efficient wind-up and release during organized team activities this week. Lance got the first crack at reps on the field on Tuesday, but Sam Darnold and Brandon Allen will get their chances as well. The 23-year-old former first-round pick hasn't really gotten a fair opportunity to prove he's the guy because of injuries, and Brock Purdy's (elbow) excellent rookie season has vaulted him into starter status entering 2023. The 49ers remain high on Lance, but unless Purdy isn't ready to go by Week 1, he'll be riding the pine in San Fran.

  • Brock Purdy Will Be Cleared To Throw Next Week

    Headshot for Brock Purdy

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said that quarterback Brock Purdy (elbow) will be allowed to start throwing sometime next week. Purdy had surgery to fix a torn UCL in his right arm, and he remains on track to be ready for Week 1 of the 2023 regular season, barring any setbacks along the way. With Purdy out, Trey Lance and Sam Darnold are expected to split first-team repetitions in offseason workouts, but unless Purdy suffers a setback, he's fully expected to open the year as the starter under center after impressing in his rookie season in 2022. The 23-year-old played in nine regular season games (five starts) and completed 67.1% of his passes for 1,374 yards, 13 TDs and only four picks. Purdy should only be taken in two-QB superflex fantasy leagues.

  • Trey Lance Has Made "Substantial Jumps" This Offseason

    Headshot for Trey Lance

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan, general manager John Lynch and private quarterbacks coach Jeff Christensen think that quarterback Trey Lance is throwing the ball more efficiently than he was last spring. Christensen said Lance's biggest breakthrough came when he stood behind Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes and watched him throw. The former No. 3 overall pick in 2021, Lance has completed just 54.9% of his passes in his first two NFL seasons over four starts. Brock Purdy (elbow) is expected to be the team's starter in 2023 if he's healthy, but he's currently recovering, so Lance and Sam Darnold will see reps in spring practices. Injuries have played a big role in Lance's delivery, but he's fully healthy now and is looking to make things interesting in training camp this summer.

  • Trey Lance Looking Good During Offseason Workouts

    Headshot for Trey Lance

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance (finger) suffered a hairline fracture of his right index finger in the 2021 preseason, and it proved to be a major setback that severely limited his throwing ability for more than a year, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan. The head coach said Lance's lower body is fine and he's been throwing the ball very well at the start of the offseason program because his finger is no longer an issue, either. "He was able to get such a better base in these last two months that I think Trey is the best that we've (seen) him right now," Shanahan said. Still, if he's healthy by the start of the regular season, Brock Purdy (elbow) is going to be the team's starter at QB. Lance, the third overall pick in 2021, could need a trade out of San Fran to regain fantasy appeal in single-year and dynasty/keeper leagues.

  • Trey Lance Changes Throwing Grip

    Headshot for Trey Lance

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance (finger) was forced to change his throwing grip last season. The young signal-caller suffered a hairline finger fracture that never healed properly. Head coach Kyle Shanahan said Lance suffered the injury during the 2021 preseason and had to change everything he did with the football. The former No. 3 overall pick has experienced some bad luck early in his career. Despite that, he'll likely begin the season as the starter with Brock Purdy (elbow) still recovering. It's uncertain what the 49ers are going to do once Purdy and Lance are both healthy. Honestly, trading Lance seems like the best solution, but it remains to be seen what the 49ers decide to do.

  • 49ers Think Highly Of All Three Quarterbacks

    Headshot for Sam Darnold

The San Francisco 49ers are extremely happy with all three of their quarterbacks -- Brock Purdy (elbow, Trey Lance and Sam Darnold -- heading into the 2023 season. "I do believe we have three quarterbacks talent-wise who are all capable of being franchise-like quarterbacks. But that's just capable. Brock's done that in his eight. And we have two other guys on our roster who we strongly believe can do that also." Purdy is expected to be ready for training camp this summer after having surgery on the UCL in his right elbow this offseason, and if fully healthy, he's expected to start under center in Week 1. Given San Fran's love for Darnold, there's a chance they trade Lance this summer to another QB-needy team. Lance's dynasty/keeper stock has fallen precipitously in the last year.

  • Brock Purdy Expected To Be Ready By Training Camp

    Headshot for Brock Purdy

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said that barring any setbacks, quarterback Brock Purdy (elbow) is expected to be back by training camp at the end of July. Purdy has already been making throwing motions with a towel, and he's expected to begin throwing a football again in June. The Niners have already said that the 23-year-old is the favorite to be the team's starter under center in 2023 if he's ready after having surgery to fix the right UCL in his throwing elbow after the season. It's one of the reasons why there have been so many Trey Lance trade rumors this offseason. Purdy led San Fran deep into the postseason and completed 67.1% of his passes for 1,374 yards, 13 touchdowns and four picks in nine games (five starts) during the regular season. He'll be a QB2 with upside in fantasy in his sophomore season.

  • Brock Purdy On Track With Rehab

    Headshot for Trey Lance

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy (elbow) is doing well rehabbing from his torn UCL that he suffered during the NFC Championship Game. Niners general manager John Lynch mentioned that Purdy will begin throwing in a few weeks. He's currently on track with his timetable, but this is a long recovery process. Purdy is expected to be the starting quarterback once he's healthy. However, it's unknown when exactly he'll be able to get back on the field. Head coach Kyle Shanahan said that Purdy could be out until Week 4. The assumption is that Trey Lance is going to start until Purdy is 100 percent healthy.

  • 49ers Agree With Isaiah Winstead

The San Francisco 49ers agreed to terms with undrafted free-agent rookie wide receiver Isaiah Winstead on an undisclosed deal on Wednesday. Winstead played in 13 games at East Carolina University last year, catching 88 passes for 1,085 yards and six touchdowns and earned All-American Athletic Conference Honorable Mention. He stands at 6-foot-4, 213 pounds and transferred to East Carolina from the University of Toledo after spending three years there. In his time at Toledo, Winstead caught 63 passes for 949 yards and four touchdowns in 19 games played. Winstead will provide the 49ers with receiving depth at training camp this summer, where he'll attempt to impress the coaches and win a roster spot.

  • Brandon Allen Set To Join 49ers

    Headshot for Brandon Allen

Veteran quarterback Brandon Allen is joining the 49ers' crowded quarterback room on a one-year deal. San Francisco has Sam Darnold, Trey Lance, and Brock Purdy on the roster, but the latter two are dealing with major injuries they suffered last season. Lance is coming back from a broken ankle, while Purdy's recovery timeline is uncertain after a torn UCL in his throwing elbow. Lance is rumored to be a trade candidate, but even if he remains on the roster, Allen is likely nothing more than an extra arm for offseason activities and training camp. The 30-year-old Arkansas alum has thrown for 1,611 yards, 10 touchdowns, and six interceptions in 15 career games played.
