  • Jameis Winston, Taysom Hill To Compete At Quarterback

New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton said he expects quarterbacks Jameis Winston and Taysom Hill to compete for the starting quarterback job in 2021 after Drew Brees announced his retirement this week. Hill has been impressive for his versatility, but his viability as a full-time starter under center seems less appealing with Brees now retired. Winston, although turnover-prone in his career, has intriguing upside as the starter. Hill took the job when Brees was injured in 2020 because of his experience and the fact that Winston hadn't been with the team for a full calendar year. Winston, the former No. 1 overall pick, probably has the advantage in the competition, and he could have some QB1 upside in this offense if he wins the job this summer.

  • Jameis Winston Officially Returning To Saints

The New Orleans Saints and quarterback Jameis Winston worked out a one-year deal on Monday with base salary of $5.5 million guaranteed. Winston can earn as much as $12 million through incentives, according to a league source. The former first overall pick and Heisman Trophy winner spent his first five seasons with the Buccaneers before signing a one-year deal last year with the Saints. The Bears were serious suitors for his services before he returned to New Orleans. The 27-year-old completed 61.3 percent of his passes for 19,737 yards, 121 touchdowns and 88 interceptions with Tampa. He led the league with 5,109 passing yards in 2019, but also became the first QB in history to throw at least 30 touchdowns and 30 interceptions. Winston will compete for the starting gig in training camp with Taysom Hill.

  • Drew Brees Retires, Jameis Winston Likely Starter

New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees officially announced his retirement on Sunday, 15 years to the day after he signed with the New Orleans Saints. It was a busy day of quarterback news for the team, as they signed Taysom Hill to a four-year, $140 million extension, though each year of the deal is voidable and it appears to be a move to save salary cap space, not an investment in Hill. Meanwhile, Ian Rapoport reports that Jameis Winston is likely going to go into 2021 as the starter in New Orleans. Technically a free agent, the former No. 1 overall pick has a strong arm and could help wide receiverMichael Thomas return to the top of the wide receiver position in terms of fantasy output, though Winston did throw 30 interceptions in his last season as a starter in Tampa.

  • Jameis Winston Leader To Be Next Saints Quarterback

Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network is reporting that quarterback Jameis Winston is the early leader to take the reins from Drew Brees and become the New Orleans Saints starter in 2021. Winston threw just 12 attempts this season and backed up Brees and Taysom Hill, but Winston has a much better arm than Hill and seems to be the better long-term fit. The former No. 1 overall pick does have a turnover problem, but maybe head coach Sean Payton can scheme that out of him. Winston would be a very appealing fantasy sleeper pick if he does earn this job.

  • Saints Not Going Into Rebuilding Mode

New Orleans Saints general manager Mickey Loomis knows it will be a "daunting" offseason if the team has to replace quarterback Drew Brees, who is expected to retire, but Loomis made it clear that the club isn't going into rebuilding mode after winning the last four NFC South titles. The Saints could also be close to $100 million over the salary cap. There is no official word yet on whether Brees will retire, but the Saints plan on waiting for his decision before deciding on how they will approach the position in 2021 and beyond. Quarterback Jameis Winston, safety Marcus Williams, defensive end Trey Hendrickson, defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins and tight end Jared Cook are all scheduled to be free agents. But the Saints could save at least $13.5 million in cap space if Brees retires. They could also consider a blockbuster trade to free up cap space and add draft picks like they did in the past with Jimmy Graham and Brandin Cooks.

  • Saints Want To Bring Jameis Winston Back

The New Orleans Saints will likely see star quarterback Drew Brees retire after this season, and they would like to bring Jameis Winston back. The Saints hardly played Winston at all this year, even when Brees missed time with rib and lung injuries, but they liked what they saw from him in practices this year. Winston still has a strong arm and the skills that made him the No. 1 overall pick out of Florida State, but he'll need to prove that he can improve his decision-making process if he's to return in New Orleans and take over when Brees inevitably retires. The 27-year-old signed a one-year deal to learn behind Brees in 2020, but there's a chance that they bring him back if they aren't sold on Taysom Hill being the starter under center in the post-Brees world. If Winston re-signs and becomes the starter in 2021, he'll have QB1 upside and will likely come at the cost of a QB2.
