  • Latest On Panthers' QB Situation

The Panthers have one of the league’s only quarterback competitions this summer and plan to draw it out a bit longer. Carolina doesn’t plan on making what head coach Matt Rhule calls a “major decision” on any position battles until after the team’s second preseason game on August 19, according to David Newton of ESPN. • Panthers Won't Rush Decision on Baker Mayfield, Sam Darnold

Carolina Panthers head coach Matt Rhule said he won't make a "major decision" on any position, particularly between quarterbacks Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold, until after the Aug. 19 preseason game against the New England Patriots. "I'm not putting a timetable on the quarterback position until after we get back from the Patriots week," Rhule said. "The Patriots week is a true litmus test for us. That will really show us where guys are." Mayfield began Saturday's scrimmage with the first team, but the two took equal repetitions with the first- and second-team offense and neither QB had a decisive advantage at the end of the day. Neither signal-caller has separated himself so far in the QB competition this summer, which has to be considered a disappointment for Mayfield.

  • Jaycee Horn Making A Slow Recovery

Carolina Panthers cornerback Jaycee Horn's (foot) slow recovery from a foot injury from 11 months ago is a little disconcerting, according to The Athletic's Joseph Person. Horn hasn't taken part in any team drills at training camp after coming off the Physically Unable to Perform list, and he won't participate in practice for several more days. The No. 8 overall pick in last year's draft missed the final 14 games of his rookie season when he broke three bones in his right foot in a Thursday night game. Horn took part in organized team activities and minicamp but reported soreness after his conditioning test. It sounds like the 22-year-old could still be ready for the start of the regular season, but the Panthers secondary certainly won't be at full strength until they get him back on the field.

  • C.J. Saunders Impressing Again This Summer

Carolina Panthers wide receiver C.J. Saunders impressed during last year's training camp as an undrafted free agent, but most wrote him off as an undersized receiver making the most of his repetitions in non-contact drills against second- and third-stringers. Saunders is impressing again this year, often against the starting secondary, and it's clear he's earned the trust of quarterbacks Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold and every other QB with his ability to get open and make catches. The 5-foot-10, 190-pounder spent most of 2021 on the practice squad before playing in two of the last three games while catching two passes for 11 yards in Week 18. He's building a case for a roster spot this year, but he won't be in play in fantasy drafts.

  • Christian McCaffrey's Stock Is Rising

Although the Carolina Panthers are being cautious with running back Christian McCaffrey at training camp this summer after a rash of injuries the last two seasons, he's not exactly taking it easy either. Head coach Matt Rhule said McCaffrey won't practice more than two days in a row in full pads, but he's still getting plenty of work in as he looks to bounce back in 2022. CMC won't play in preseason games, and there's a plan to be smarter with him during the regular season as well, but it doesn't include putting him in bubble wrap. "Christian's a dominant football player. He plays a high-contact, high-percent-of-injury position. We're going to put him out there and play him," Rhule said. "I think we're all thinking about Christian one way only, and that's attack."

  • Terrace Marshall Jr. Misses Practice

Carolina Panthers wide receiver Terrace Marshall Jr. (hamstring) was unable to take the field for practice on Friday. Head coach Matt Rhule mentioned that Marshall shouldn't be on the sidelines for too long. It sounds like Marshall has been making solid progress on the field heading into his sophomore campaign. Last season, Marshall finished with 17 receptions, 138 receiving yards, and zero touchdowns through 13 games (three starts) with Carolina. The expectation is that Marshall will be the No. 3 wideout to begin the season. Fantasy managers in dynasty and deep leagues should have Marshall on their radar.

  • Chuba Hubbard Has Improved At Pass Protection

Carolina Panthers running back Chuba Hubbard has improved at pass protection, according to head coach Matt Rhule. He led the team in carries last season with Christian McCaffrey only playing seven games. Sadly, Hubbard struggled on the ground with 3.6 yards per carry. He'll be competing with D'Onata Forearm for the backup gig in Carolina. Hubbard might have the edge, assuming he continues improving in pass protection. Although, it's unlikely he'll carry weekly fantasy value, assuming McCaffrey can actually stay healthy.

  • Panthers Activate Jaycee Horn From PUP List

The Carolina Panthers activated cornerback Jaycee Horn (foot) from the Physically Unable to Perform list on Monday after he dealt with some foot soreness. Horn will be eased back into practices at training camp. The 22-year-old broke his foot in Week 3 of last year and missed the remainder of his rookie season, but barring any further setbacks, he has plenty of time to get ready for Week 1. In just three games in 2021, the eighth overall pick of last year's draft had five tackles (three solo), an interception and one pass defensed. A full season from Horn would be great news for Carolina's secondary.

  • Panthers Sign Duke Dawson

The Carolina Panthers signed free-agent cornerback Duke Dawson to an undisclosed deal on Friday. The Panthers have some back-end depth issues at the position in training camp, so they will bring the former second-round pick by the New England Patriots in this summer. The 26-year-old spent his only two NFL seasons in 2019 and 2020 with the Denver Broncos, recording just 27 tackles (17 solo), two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery in 26 games (four starts).

  • Baker Mayfield Doesn't Impress Thursday

Carolina Panthers quarterback Baker Mayfield made some poor decisions on the field while taking first-team repetitions at training camp practice on Thursday. Two of his first three passes in 7-on-7 drills should have been intercepted, and they were the type of mistakes the Panthers are trying to eliminate. Head coach Matt Rhule will continue flip-flopping Mayfield and Sam Darnold with the first team as they compete for the starting job this summer. Neither Mayfield nor Darnold looked good in 2021, but Mayfield was also playing injured for most of the year. The mere fact that the Panthers traded for Mayfield gives him the edge in the QB competition, but it doesn't mean he'll be a very attractive QB2 in two-QB leagues if he wins the starting job.

  • Jaycee Horn Placed On PUP List

Carolina Panthers cornerback Jaycee Horn (foot) was placed on the PUP list on Wednesday. Horn logged just three games before his rookie campaign abruptly ended due to a broken foot. However, while he stated he would be a "full-go" for training camp, he began experiencing soreness in the same foot after a conditioning test, forcing the team to pump the brakes. The 22-year-old showed promise despite his limited time on the field in 2021-22, compiling five tackles and one interception. It's unknown how long he'll be shut down, although there's a chance he'll be ready for Week 1.

  • Panthers Place Shaq Thompson, Jaycee Horn On PUP List

Two Panthers starting defenders will begin their training camps belatedly. The team placed Shaq Thompson and Jaycee Horn on its active/PUP list. Thompson landed on the Panthers’ PUP because of an offseason knee surgery, David Newton of ESPN.com tweets. While Matt Rhule described this as a cleanup-type procedure, Thompson will still miss a chunk of […]

  • Sam Darnold, Baker Mayfield Splitting First-Team Reps

Carolina Panthers quarterback Sam Darnold took the first-team repetitions at training camp practice on Wednesday, and Baker Mayfield will get the first-team reps at practice on Thursday, according to head coach Matt Rhule. This was the expectation all along after the Panthers acquired Mayfield in a trade with the Cleveland Browns. The mere fact that the Panthers traded for Mayfield should give him the edge for the starting gig in Week 1 of the regular season, but Darnold will be given a chance to prove himself after a disappointing first season in Carolina in 2021. Mayfield dealt with an injured left shoulder for most of last year and wasn't very good with the Browns either, but at this point, he's an upgrade over Darnold. Neither QB will be more than a low-end QB2 in fantasy, though.

  • Panthers CB Rashaan Melvin Retires

Rashaan Melvin re-signed with the Panthers in March, but the veteran cornerback will not go through with a second season in Carolina. Instead, Melvin intends to retire. The Panthers announced Melvin is walking away Wednesday. Although Melvin signed a one-year, $1.1MM deal to stay with Carolina, he did not report for the start of the […]

  • Christian McCaffrey To Have Normal Training Camp

Carolina Panthers head coach Matt Rhule said that he doesn't expect many changes with running back Christian McCaffrey's (ankle) preseason preparation. McCaffrey isn't expected to play at all in the preseason after playing in just 10 total games over the last two seasons due to injuries. But in his last healthy season in 2019, CMC went off for 1,387 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns while adding 116 catches for 1,005 yards and four more TDs in 16 games. Although he isn't in play for the first overall fantasy selection anymore, he should still be considered a top-five fantasy back for his upside alone, even in a Panthers offense with questions at quarterback. The good news is that the 26-year-old didn't need offseason surgery on his injured ankle.

  • Danny Shelton Visiting With Panthers

Free-agent defensive tackle Danny Shelton is visiting with the Carolina Panthers on Monday, according to a source. Shelton could serve as defensive line depth before training camp kicks off this week. The 28-year-old spent last season with the New York Giants, recording 31 tackles (12 solo) and half a sack in 13 games (zero starts). He was originally the 12th overall pick by the Cleveland Browns in 2015 out of Auburn. Shelton has spent time with the Browns, New England Patriots, Detroit Lions and Giants in his seven years in the league and has totaled 278 tackles (138 solo), six sacks, 17 tackles for loss, 19 QB hits and a forced fumble in 100 games (72 starts).

  • Shaq Thompson Has Knee Cleanup, Will Start On PUP

Carolina Panthers head coach Matt Rhule said that linebacker Shaq Thompson (knee) will start training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list after having a knee cleanup. Thompson will be out a couple weeks, according to Rhule. Thompson has three straight seasons of 100-plus tackles despite missing three games in 2021 with a foot injury. Last year, he had 104 tackles (65 solo), two sacks, nine tackles for loss, six QB hits, two interceptions and five passes defensed in 14 games. He might be a little slow out of the gates in 2022 if he's not at 100 percent, but Thompson should still be on the IDP radar after finishing as the No. 29 fantasy linebacker last season.

  • Panthers Agree With Third-Rounder Matt Corral

The Carolina Panthers agreed to terms with third-round quarterback Matt Corral on his four-year rookie contract on Monday, according to a source. The former Ole Miss quarterback was one of the few remaining unsigned picks league-wide, but he'll be ready to report to training camp on Monday afternoon now. After the Panthers traded for Baker Mayfield, Corral will enter camp as the No. 3 signal-caller behind Mayfield and Sam Darnold, and there's a good chance he'll sit on the sidelines and learn his entire rookie season in 2022. As such, the 23-year-old will only be an option in dynasty/keeper drafts this fall.
