While we try to keep to a pretty regular weekly update schedule for our projections and rankings, the NFL machine doesn’t always cooperate. Sometimes there is news that is pretty significant smack dab in the middle of the last update and the next scheduled update. In the interest of staying on top of things and keeping our cheatsheets current, here are three items adjusted since last Saturday.
It appears RB David Wilson’s season isn’t just over, but his career in the NFL. His fantasy value was on a rollercoaster ride since last year due to a neck injury that threatened his career at the time, but this offseason hope sprung eternal with positive rehab reports and him staking claim at a share of running back duties.
That was until late last week, when news broke Wilson suffered a burner and needed more consultation with specialists, this time with a very pessimistic slant in the news reports. Over the weekend the Giants put Wilson on injured reserve and subsequently waived him.
In our most recent update, I removed Wilson’s projections and bumped him out of the rankings into our “Not Ranked – Awaiting News” section. We didn’t need to wait long. Now he’ll simply bump down into “Not Ranked”. Rookie Andre Williams is now ranked inside our Top 60 at RB.
This is a tough one to swallow for fantasy players, especially those holding him in dynasty leagues of course. Talented player who struggled when thrust into a bigger role last year, but one who never got a chance to redeem himself.
This report is less grim. New starter at running back for the Denver Broncos, Montee Ball, required appendectomy surgery. He’s expected to miss most or all of the preseason, but hopes to be ready for Week 1 of the NFL regular season.
This is the kind of thing where we worry about conditioning and practice reps in a complex offense, especially with Ball becoming the bell cow in place of departed Knowshon Moreno. However, his value doesn’t change much as one would expect a full recovery with no complications from this type of surgery.
In fact, in an ongoing draft for a three player keeper league I had the 1.09 pick and was deciding Monday between Giovani Bernard and Montee Ball. As is always good policy for slow drafts, I did a quick check on the news for either name, and this is what came up for Ball. I went with Bernard and hoped Ball would, based on this, come back to me in the second round seven picks later. Didn’t happen. He was taken the very next pick.
One thing that does change however is the status of the backups. I don’t suggest any change to the projections, but lets move Ronnie Hillman and his glowing training camp reports up into the fantasy radar section, joining teammate C.J. Anderson.
Chicago Bears WR Marquess Wilson broke his collarbone, so while he had very moderate projections and was right near the bottom of our WR rankings, he was on the list but is now removed.
Wilson was a name with some buzz behind it, given he had a nice opportunity playing in the shadow of Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery. There isn’t much to get excited about amongst Bears receivers after these top two, so no new addition to the rankings, but TE Martellus Bennett moves up a little.
