This is my weekly column where I suggest streaming low owned starting pitchers that have a matchup in their favor next week to help your fantasy baseball team. Most of these hurlers are to be used and tossed back to the waiver wire. Some of them will graduate from the wire and find a permanent space on someone’s roster. Hopefully, yours.
Streaming Starting Pitchers Week 27
My process is to look at wOBA, ISO and K% because they tend to identify weak lineups and conversely for pitchers I look at wOBA, ISO against and their K%.
All statistics, ownership and projected starting dates are as of Thursday, September 19.
RHP Ross Stripling, LAD
Owned Y44%|E35% · @ San Diego Padres – Tuesday, September 24
As a starting pitcher, Striping has a 3.36 ERA, 1.10 WHIP, 8.6 K/9 and has struck out 23.9% of batters faced in 14 starts. Those are really good numbers. His 8 road starts are even better: 2.97 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, 11.1 K/9 and he struck out 30.4% of batters faced.
He is scheduled to make a road start in San Diego next week where the Padres have these stats when facing RHP at home:
- 0.292 wOBA (4th worst in MLB), 0.164 ISO (8th worst) and a 26.3 K% (3rd worst)
- Opposing right-handed SP have put up a 3.72 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 8.9 K/9 in 59 starts
Do the right thing here and stream Stripling for this match up.
RHP Tyler Beede, SF
Owned Y4%|E2% · vs. Colorado Rockies – Thursday, September 26
In his 20 starts this season, Beede has a 4.96 ERA, 1.46 WHIP, 8.2 K/9 and has struck out 20.5% of batter faced. Not great. Not great at all. What if I told you that his home starts were better? 4.03 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, 8.7 K/9 and a 23.1 K% in 8 hoe starts.
I said his numbers were better at home, I didn’t say they were great. What is great, though, is his match up next week against the Rockies in San Francisco. Here is how the Rockies measure against RHP on the road:
- 0.283 wOBA (Worst in MLB), 0.148 ISO (2nd worst in MLB) and a 25.4 K% (6th worst)
- Opposing right-handed SP have put up a 4.09 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 8.9 K/9 in 47 starts
Beede is a sneaky good streaming option. What more do you want me to say? Sometimes you open the fridge and the only beers you see are those stray ones leftover from a party many, many months ago. Beede is just that and now’s the time to pop that cap.
RHP Dinelson Lamet, SD
Owned Y29%|E13% · @ Arizona Diamondbacks – Sunday, September 29
A Straight Cheese favorite! This marks the 5th time I’m recommending streaming Lamet. Overall, he has a 3.84 ERA, 1.24 WHIP, 12.6 K/9 and has struck out 32.8% of the batters he’s faced in 13 starts. But, check this out…
- 4 Straight Cheese recommended starts – 1.96 ERA, 1.04 WHIP, 12.9 K/9 and a 34.7 K% in 23.0 innings
- Other 9 starts – 4.80 ERA, 1.33 WHIP, 12.4 K/9 and a 31.8 K% in 45.0 innings
The new Straight Cheese poster boy, everyone.
Next week he is scheduled to face the Diamondbacks in Arizona where
- 0.303 wOBA (6th worst in MLB), 0.164 ISO (7th worst) and a 21.7 K% (14th best)
- Opposing SP have put up a 4.40 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 7.7 K/9 in 53 starts
Theses numbers don’t suggest a great match up at first glance but Lamet’s ability to miss bats will shine through and I fully expect him to post another Straight Cheese worthy start.
Extra Cheese
Here is where I recommend a two-start pitcher for you to stream. Please bear in mind that things can change after this article is posted. Injuries, rain delays, managerial moves, etc. can happen.
RHP Homer Bailey, OAK
Owned Y42%|E23% – @ Angels (Tue Sep 24) & @ Mariners (Sun Sep 29)
Bailey has a 4.55 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, 8.3 K/9 and has struck out 21.7% of batters faced in 30 starts with Kansas City and Oakland. The move to Oakland has been good for him:
- Oakland – 4.21 ERA, 1.17 WHIP, 8.6 K/9 and a 22.8 K% in 12 starts
- Kansas City – 4.80 ERA, 1.41 WHIP, 8.1 K/9 and a 20.8 K% in 18 starts
He is in line for two advantageous match ups next week.
- Angels numbers against RHP at home since August 1st
- 0.312 wOBA (12th worst in MLB), 0.165 ISO (9th worst in MLB) and a 204.6 K% (8th worst)
- Opposing SP have put up a 3.84 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 9.9 K/9 in 13 starts
- Mariners numbers against RHP at home since August 1st
- 0.311 wOBA (9th worst in MLB), 0.177 (11th worst) and a 27.8 K% (3rd worst)
Opposing SP have put up a 4.73 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 10.7 K/9 in 12 games
- 0.311 wOBA (9th worst in MLB), 0.177 (11th worst) and a 27.8 K% (3rd worst)
I chose August 1st purely to show that these two teams have been struggling recently. The Angels will be without Trout and Ohtani and may just be looking to get this season over and the Mariners are rebuilding and “limping to the end of one of the worst seasons, by many measures, in club history.”
Let’s stream Bailey out there and take advantage.
Evaluating Streaming Starting Pitchers Suggested in Week 25
Let’s look back at my previous recommendations for starting pitchers to stream back in Week 25. Note we have to look back two weeks since last week’s Straight Cheese is for the current week. Got it? Good.
Name | Date | G | IP | ER | H | BB | K | DEC | ERA | WHIP |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Joe Musgrove, PIT | 9/12 @ SFG | 1 | 5.00 | 0 | 4 | 0 | 7 | W | 0.00 | 0.80 |
Zach Davies, MIL | 9/11 @ MIA | 1 | 4.33 | 3 | 4 | 2 | 3 | ND | 6.23 | 1.38 |
Sandy Alcantara, MIA | 9/13 @ SFG | 1 | 7.00 | 1 | 9 | 0 | 6 | L | 1.29 | 1.29 |
Cumulative Streaming Season Total | 50 | 255.00 | 138 | 278 | 89 | 224 | 16 – 19 | 4.87 | 1.44 |
C’mon, Davies! Thankfully Musgrove & Alcantara did what they were supposed to do.
Here’s a look back at the two-start pitcher I recommended back in Week 25.
Name | Date | G | IP | ER | H | BB | K | DEC | ERA | WHIP |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Jordan Lyles, MIL | 9/9 @ MIA | 1 | 4.33 | 1 | 4 | 3 | 3 | ND | 2.08 | 1.62 |
Jordan Lyles, MIL | 9/14 @ STL | 1 | 6.00 | 1 | 6 | 0 | 4 | W | 1.50 | 1.00 |
Total | 2 | 10.33 | 2 | 10 | 3 | 7 | 1 – 0 | 1.74 | 1.26 | |
Cumulative Two-Start Season Total | 33 | 180.67 | 78 | 168 | 52 | 174 | 16 – 6 | 3.89 | 1.22 |
Yeah, baby. That’s more like it.
Here’s a monthly breakdown of all the pitchers I recommended this season (both one start and two starts).
Month | G | IP | ER | H | BB | K | W-L | ERA | WHIP |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
April | 9 | 49.00 | 21 | 49 | 13 | 46 | 4 – 2 | 3.86 | 1.27 |
May | 20 | 107.00 | 54 | 104 | 42 | 103 | 7 – 6 | 4.54 | 1.36 |
June | 19 | 101.67 | 58 | 105 | 28 | 77 | 7 – 8 | 5.13 | 1.31 |
July | 11 | 59.33 | 38 | 74 | 13 | 57 | 6 – 3 | 5.76 | 1.47 |
August | 14 | 67.00 | 33 | 64 | 34 | 69 | 4 – 4 | 4.43 | 1.46 |
September | 10 | 51.67 | 12 | 50 | 11 | 46 | 4 – 2 | 2.09 | 1.18 |
Total | 83 | 435.67 | 216 | 446 | 141 | 398 | 32 – 25 | 4.46 | 1.35 |
My September to remember is still going strong but I still have some work to do to get keep that overall ERA down below the 4.52 MLB average ERA.
