This is my weekly column where I suggest low owned starting pitchers that have a matchup in their favor in the coming week to help your fantasy baseball team. Most of these hurlers are to be used and tossed back to the waiver wire. Some of them will graduate from the wire and find a permanent space on someone’s roster,
Streaming Starting Pitchers Week 13
My process is to look at wOBA, ISO and K% to identify weak lineups and conversely for pitchers I look at wOBA, ISO against and their K%.
All statistics, ownership and projected starting dates are as of Thursday afternoon, June 13.
LHP Tommy Milone, SEA
Owned Y3%|E2% · vs. Kansas City Royals – Monday, June 17
Milone has been a pleasant surprise for the Mariners so far in 2019. In the 5 games he’s appeared in he’s put up a 3.42 ERA, 4.16 xFIP, 0.99 WHIP and 26 strikeouts in 26.1 innings (25.0 K%). Recently, Seattle uses an opener before putting in Milone into the game and it has been effective.
He’s set to face a Royals team that struggles against southpaws on the road. They’re near the bottom of the three metrics I look at in this split: 0.281 wOBA (5th worst in MLB), 0.141 ISO (6th worst) and 27.9 K% (5th worst). Left handed starting pitchers are averaging a 2.57 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 12.1 K/9.
LHP Framber Valdez, HOU
Owned Y34%|E5% · @ New York Yankees – Thursday, June 20
This is a bold proclamation to state Valdez, who will be making his third start in Yankee stadium, is worth streaming. He currently has a 2.73 ERA, 3.98 xFIP, 1.21 WHIP and 28 strikeouts in 33 innings (20.3 K%) and has the opportunity to stay in the Astros rotations thanks to Corbin Martin’s struggles and injuries to Forrest Whitney and Collin McHugh. He’s good, but his matchup with the Yankees makes him even more appealing.
The Yanks have a 0.287 wOBA (5th worst in MLB), a 0.135 ISO (also 5th worst) and strikeout 27.0% of the time (4th worst) when facing LHP at home. In fact, lefty starting pitchers are averaging a 3.11 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 9.7 K/9 when facing New York at home.
Valdez is in line for a good matchup and since his start is the first in the weekend series with New York, if it gets pushed back he’s still worth streaming. Also, Houston’s other lefty SP, Wade Miley, should enjoy the same advantageous matchup next weekend. If he is available you should consider streaming him, too.
LHP Martin Perez, MIN
Owned Y44%|E46% · @ Kansas City Royals – Friday, June 21
Well, it looks like I’m telling you to stream another pitcher against the inept Royals next week. This time it is in Kansas City where they have a 0.281 wOBA and a 0.122 ISO (both are 4th worst in MLB) against lefties. They don’t strikeout quite as much: 23.3% (only 11th worst). Left-handed starting pitchers are averaging a 3.29 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and just over a strikeout per inning (9.1 K/9).
In his first year with Minnesota he’s posting a 3.48 ERA and a 1.32 WHIP when he starts a game while striking out 20.9% of the batters he’s faced. He’s set up for a good outing next weekend and we need to take advantage.
Here is where I recommend a two-start pitcher for you to stream. Please bear in mind that things can change after this article is posted. Injuries, rain delays, managerial moves, etc. can happen.
RHP Lance Lynn, TEX
Owned Y52%|E37% – vs. Indians (Mon Jun 17) & vs. White Sox (Sat Jun 22)
Through 14 starts Lynn has a 4.40 ERA, 3.91 xFIP, 1.33 WHIP and 93 strikeouts in 86 innings (25.4 K%). But in his last 3 home starts he has 2 wins with a 2.79 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 26 strikeouts in 19.1 innings (34.2 K%).
- Indians vs RHP on the road: 0.295 wOBA (6th worst in MLB), 0.159 (11th worst) and a 23.8 K% (12th worst).
- White Sox vs RHP on the road: 0.302 wOBA (9th worst in MLB), 0.153 ISO (9th worst) and a 26.1 K% (4th worst).
Both of these matchups make the recently effective Lynn quite desirable next week. Let’s do this!

Well, looks like I had a Clint Eastwood week: the good (Miley), the bad (Eickhoff) and the ugly (Gibson). Still struggling to get that ERA down below 4.
Here’s a look back at the two start pitcher I recommended back in Week 11.

Well, thankfully the Astros sent Martin down to the minors so we wouldn’t get two painfully awful starts from him. That’s about the only good thing I can say at the moment.
