Googling “baseball pool” returned some weird images, so went with this one of the swimming pool from Chase Field, home of the Arizona Diamondbacks. At any rate, the point is join our 13-run baseball pool!
Have you ever heard of a 13-run baseball pool? I had not until a random conversation with a diehard New York Mets fan. This is not fantasy baseball, and even a game involving much (any?) skill, but it sounds like a lot of fun. And what better audience to try this than our Draft Buddy fantasy baseball members?
A 13-run baseball pool works like this… each person in the pool picks a Major League Baseball team. Then from the start date we mark when your team scores no runs in a game, 1 run in a game, 2 runs in a game, 3 runs, 4 runs, etc., etc. all the way up to 13 runs in a game. The first person whose team scores each of those 14 possible run totals, wins.
Yep, pretty sure no skill involved. Think of it as baseball bingo, and a fun way to track a team you normally wouldn’t follow.
Rules, Prizes
For our 13-run pool, we will have separate groups for each of the American League and National League. To select your team, make sure you are a registered Draft Buddy member, and post your choice in the comments below. Limit 1 entry per member.
We will start May 1. One twist I am going to throw in given the short notice is you can enter or change the team you pick all the way up to May 15, even though the stats accumulate starting May 1. A team cannot be picked more than once however, so you can only throw back your team if there is another team still available.
The winner of each of the American and National League groups receives a Draft Buddy t-shirt. If anyone would like to donate a prize to the prize pool that would be very cool of you.
Contest Standings
And away we go! Here are the pool standings starting May 1. I will update the member names as they are posted below in the comments.

Join below by simply posting your member name and team. The pool is designed with a limited number of available entries. I am going to take the Milwaukee Brewers (since I already follow the Blue Jays extensively, no need to take them). Thanks and good luck!
I am officially in taking the Milwaukee Brewers.
Debated whether I should just run this a month and the entry with the highest total wins, but probably more “fun” (frustrating) waiting to the bitter end for your team to hit the final run total you need to complete the cycle.
I’ll take the Bluejays of Toronto. Neat idea!
Cool, thanks Mike. Jays are off the board!
They can do it!!! Let’s go Braves!!!
Does this mean I am going to have to force a t-shirt on you if you win? ;)
Since Wallyworld took the Braves… I would normally take the Tigers but they already scored 13 runs once this season… I do not like their chances to do it again!
Give me the Red Sox!
To create the results table may be one of the most difficult database queries I’ve ever done, which is saying something, I’ve queried a lot of football and baseball stats and other things over the years. The initial April results posted yesterday were actually slightly flawed, but should be good now. Results starting May 1 now added to the post.
Hi Mike
as You and I have discussed…..no t-shirt!!! I don’t want my competition knowing about this site!
If I luck out get me an Acuna autographed baseball!!
Really cool idea! I will take the Yankees.
I’ll take the D-backs.
Nice. Two more added. Nationals might be a good add since they already have a 12 spot under their belt.
I’ll take the Cubs!
Actually Mike, Could you change mine to the Astros? Thanks!
Sure. It is in the rules you can change as long as the team you are changing to it available. Will update in a minute.
Since you took the Brewers. Really, the Brewers? I will take the Chicago White Sox.
Thanks
I’ll roll with the Tribe. The Cleveland offense is due. Thanks.
Ha. I’ve been sort of trying to pick a National League team to cheer for and been leaning to the Brewers.
I’m in. Give me the Cubbies
I will take the Rockies!
Welcome Chris and Anthony. That is two more on the National side, so 6 AL and 5 NL. Still lots of room for others to join (or for us to change teams). I’ll give the Brewers at least a week to 10 days. Yesterday was the first time this season the Blue Jays were shutout this season so that helps Mike A. having that one under his belt.
maybe old school here…..but your pick should be your pick……LOL
I know you’re old school ;) Generally I would agree with you, but since I essentially opened this contest the day it started I extended the join deadline to the 15th to get more people in, and so as to not give those late entries an advantage I decided to let people change their teams.
Wow, Cleveland got an 11 and 13 in one day! brentnap is in good shape with the Indians. Jays got a 13 at least even though they got smoked in the second game.
I respectfully request to change teams from the Cubs to the Nats
Sure thing Chris, making the switch now.
Brent is in great shape with the Indians but still needs the shutout and a 1-run outing. If we could combine a couple teams that would help, like Orioles (can’t score, have 0 through 4 plus 7) and Indians, Nationals.
On a short slate last night the Astros score 16 and the Cubs 14. Should the “13” category in the pool really be 13+?
Cubs got a 13 last night! If the Brewers don’t score more than 7 at least once before the 15th then I am going to trade them in.
give me the cubs please
You’ve got it. Cubs are taken again.
Rick just missed out picking the Cubs and is now in with the Angels.
Brewers got an 11! Now I don’t know what to do. Deadline is tomorrow to trade in your team. Look at the Orioles! Only need an 8, 10, 12 and 13 to finish it off.
Boston red sox
Hi Ken. Red Sox are taken already – and haven’t been that good with respect to this pool actually. Have 6 games they scored exactly 5 runs and 4 games they scored exactly 6 since May 1. Check the results table above you can see which teams are still available. Or maybe Chris will trade off the BoSox for you? :)
Can i have the Orioles?
You got it Julie. Good choice. You’ll probably win! Ha ha.
Thanks, I completely missed the first email when it started.
I’ll take the LA Dodgers
I’ll take the Pirates.
Done and done. Welcome RossEv and MabeRuth.
Mike: put me down for the Phils, hey? There be a lot o firepower there.
Jim is in with the Phillies! Now I think we have 9 NL, 8 AL entries.
Brewers are up to 9 of 14! Come on boys lets start getting some high run games.
like my Braves Mike……remember my baseball!!! LOL
This is a fun event. So next month Wallyworld rule……you ride your pick for the month….yes, no,maybe so
Right now we are all in, no more switches so yes, wallyworld rule is in effect. This is fun! My Brewers still need a 6! Had 6 in the 7th and a comfy lead but scored a single in the 8th and 9th to land on another 8 run score. Bah!
gone fishing for the week…….two kinds of luck……the 13th run!…..or lots of fish!
I`ll take the baseball Mike, I can get fish at the grocery store!!
Go Braves!!
I don’t know if anyone got any closer over the weekend. wallyworld is very close with the Braves but needs a 12 and 13. brentnap in the AL has the 12 and 13, but needs 0, 7 and 10 from the Indians.
All I need from the Brewers is … 6, 9, 10, 12, 13! Why is 6 so hard?
Brewers got a 9! I am going to catch you wallyworld!
Brewers got 17 on the Mets! That does not help me.
brentnap just needs a 7 from the Indians! A seven doesn’t seem like it should be too hard. Rick is right behind him but needs a 6 and a lucky 13.
We have a very tight race in the National League side. wallyworld, krby13 and MabeRuth all have 12 of 14. Five of the six missing for these three are the 12 and 13 run totals, so keep an eye out for some big scores from any of the Braves, Cubs and Pirates. Go Brewers!
brentnap needs an Indians shutout to win this thing! And … just sayin’ … Chris has the Indians on the wrong side of his streaming pitcher article this weekend facing the Twins.
New monthly contest?
This time we keep our team for the whole month, no swapping?
Give me the Rockies……..mile high scores!!!!
I would like to start a new one, but not quite ready yet. Need to get football Draft Buddy ready! Maybe a July 1 start. I will start a new post when I am ready to roll out a new contest. Noted, you’ve got dibs on the Rockies.
One too many runs for the Braves, wallyworld! Scored a 14 last night. In the AL we’ve got an Indians need a shutout, Angels need a 13 showdown between brentnap and Rick.
Dodgers and Nationals take over our NL lead at 13 each, only need a 13 to win it! A few 11-run scores last night but not 12s or 13s. Milwaukee do something! Been stuck on 10 of 14 for way too long.
Brewers got 12 two days in a row! And still can’t get a 6. Whose idea was this contest anyway?!?
Indians scored 1 last night – so close!
Brewers scored 13!!!!!
13 Texas, 12 Colorado (helps gialde) last night. We have an extremely close race to the finish here!
We should track how many times the Indians have shutout an opponent since they got to 13 on our pool board and need the shutout. You keeping track, brentnap?
This is a tight contest!
6 people could clinch any day and another 6 are only two outcomes away from clinching!
We should start a new one on July 1st (and keep this one going if no winner decided).
Every day I check to see if any team scored 12 or 13, or if the Indians got shutout, and what the heck Milwaukee scored. Seriously a 6 or a 10 cannot be this difficult!
Love the idea of a new one, we each pick an AL and an NL team. Will fire it up shortly.
Indians got shutout! Indians got shutout! brentnap wins the AL!
lets go cubs need 1 more
Brewers got 6! Now just a 10-run game boys, lets go!
I will take the NY Yankees and the Chicago Cubs
Hey Chris. First, need you in the new pool, here:
https://www.draftbuddy.com/fantasy-baseball/2018/06/13-run-baseball-pool-free-contest-july-1-start/
In that one both teams are already picked. Give me a couple from the tables on that page that don’t have a member name after them.
Brewers scored 10! Brewers scored 10! Woo-hoo! We have a National League winner! Now I feel a little extra bad stealing the BrewCrew on you, ezcollectibles. Can we say that is the second close call for a t-shirt for you?
I’ll always take a free t-shirt and wear it proudly!
Okay, this one is officially – closed! It took us from May 1st to July 8th to get a winner for each league. Since I took the NL side, I am going to do a random draw from all of our members who played (AL and NL) for the second t-shirt. Which I still need to order… Brent, thanks for your patience. Thanks everyone for playing!
Can I get in this or what? I can’t figure it out and opening day is today and about to start in like an hour
Hey Brian. This is last year’s pool, but we’ve got one for 2019 and you can still join. Just need to tell me what team you want from the remaining that are available in the table. Don’t worry about the start today. This could take a while to determine our winner. The 2019 pool is right here:
