The much loved, but lesser known, fantasy baseball version of the Cheatsheet Compiler & Draft Buddy originated in 2003 when many of my fantasy football CC/DB customers said, “hey Mike, can you make a baseball version of this awesome custom ranking and draft tracking tool?”
Me: “Uh, uh, uh… sure?” And so I did. I was happy to do it for the cross-section of football plus baseball fanatics, and since I didn’t really know how many people would latch on to the thing, I gave it away for free through FF Today, and later teaming up with fantasy baseball dedicated website, RotoChamps (shout out to Heath, Justin and Jackie).
About three years ago, RotoChamps ceased to exist because cake decorating turned out to be way more successful than fantasy baseball (shout out to Heath and Jackie). However, I was lucky to find Rick Milleman to contribute on the player projections side to help keep the baseball CC/DB alive. And so we – Rick and I – forged onwards with a new permanent home for the software, DraftBuddy.com.
All those years working on the software getting ready for the upcoming baseball season, and giving it away for free, was getting to be a tough sell for me to Rick, and for both Rick and I to our respective families. A lot of time and effort, with no payoff. We considered it an investment of time to try selling it one day.
The last two years we sold the CC/DB for what we felt was a modest price of $9.95. The football version sells like gangbusters at $16.95 in the late summer every year, so $9.95 seemed fair. Heck, some people are willing to pay that much just to download last year’s player stats in a pre-formatted Excel file. The CC/DB includes the last three years of stats for every player plus post-All-Star game stats and games played by position stats from last year, not to mention all of its primary features and other tricks.
To justify the CC/DB being a pay product though, I felt we needed to really step up our game with the website, providing a more complete all-around fantasy baseball content website to attract people to the software. We developed a fantasy baseball draft kit, added a news feature last year and we paid a pair of excellent writers, Scott Rudicil for his Tiers of Starting Pitching dissertation and Antonio D’Arcangelis for his Tiers of Relief Pitching closer rankings.
I was very happy with what we accomplished, in every way except, financially. Now revenue was up from zero, but also costs were up, and at the end of the day it wasn’t nil any more but still pretty modest returns. Complicating things, if I’m spending all of this time on baseball, then I don’t have time to work on various important football projects. Who here played Fantasy Throwdown this past season?
Where I’m going with this is, we’re going to try rolling back the clock to a few years ago. We are still jazzed about the fantasy baseball version of the Cheatsheet Compiler & Draft Buddy, but we want to scale back the website for more focus on the software, without the supporting draft kit, and give away the CC/DB for free. There are a lot of guys out there doing some great stuff in terms of draft kit-esque content, plus you can get news with fantasy analysis in lots of places. We’ll let them do what they do best, while we do what we do best.
All you need to get the 2012 edition of the Cheatsheet Compiler & Draft Buddy for fantasy baseball is a free membership to this website, DraftBuddy.com, and you’ll have access to download the CC/DB.
If you are willing, we’d be happy to accept donations to support the cause (and keep our wives happy). We continue to have some costs, including web hosting, opportunity cost of our time, and I may still try to hire Scott and Antonio for their annual articles, because those are excellent.
Rick works for beer money, beer, and Atlanta Braves tickets. I work for beer money, beer, Toronto Blue Jays tickets, comic books and Star Wars Lego (for my son Alex, honestly…). I plan to add PayPal donation links on the website, which hopefully you decide to utilize if you find the CC/DB helpful for your upcoming fantasy draft.
Thanks to you guys who already found your way past the under construction front page on the website in recent weeks and purchased the CC/DB at the old price. I’ll be refunding your purchase, unless of course you want to be among the first to send a donation.
Now let’s finally kick off this 2012 fantasy baseball season. Come get your copy of the Cheatsheet Compiler & Draft Buddy! Enjoy!
