Three more moves of interest as we gear up for the Winter Meetings:
Javier Vazquez to the Atlanta Braves. The Braves have been after Vazquez for more than 5 years and look to finally get their man. He’s 32 and has a few more good years left in him. The move to the NL will help and could get some wins if the Braves offense can find the spark again. The White Sox will receive Brent Lillibridge, Tyler Flowers and two other youngsters. Lillibridge is a shortstop with a mediocre future (think John McDonald). Flowers can mash the ball, but the big question surrounding him is his ability to stay catcher-eligible and when will he be moved to first base.
Mike Hampton signs with the Houston Astros. Hampton has had some outstanding years in the past, but is a legitimate injury risk now after missing 2-1/2 years with more ailments than you can shake a stick at. Houston shouldn’t count too much on Hampton, but could get away with about 20 starts and 8-10 wins.
Junichi Tazawa signs with the Boston Red Sox. This kid is not going to be a superstar! He’s got good, but not great written all over him. He’ll toil in the minors for a few years before he gets a whiff of Fenway. If you have a very deep bench or an extra minor league spot, he’s worth a flyer. But I wouldn’t spend much on him on draft day.
