There have been a large number of callups in the last few weeks. Many youngsters with great potential for you to choose from, so let’s look at a few of the ones you should pay attention to.
We have to start with Homer Bailey. The Reds 22-year old RHP saw his first Big League action of 2008 tonight. Though he didn’t win, his future in the Majors is very bright and you should be all over this pickup in keeper leagues if he is somehow still available. His 2008 outlook is mediocre and you shouldn’t count on him being your ace quite yet. But if the Reds commit a rotation slot to Bailey for the rest of 2008, he won’t hurt you.
Carlos Gonzalez was the big prize going to Oakland in the Dan Haren deal. The 22-year old OF made his MLB debut this week and looks like a deer caught in headlights on a highway right before he gets run over. Gonzalez is hitting .217 over those 6 games with no HR’s or SB’s to show. Even if you are desperate for OF help in 2008, this guy should not be on your radar. But if you can stash him on your bench or a minor league roster spot, this is a future stud worth holding on to.
Josh Anderson is up in Atlanta thanks to Mark Kotsay‘s most recent back woes. Anderson posted an uncharacteristic .358 average in 67 AB’s with Houston last year. His .282 average and 13 steals in triple-A this season is more likely. This guy can swipe 40-50 bases a season if given a starting opportunity, but his OBP will most likely limit Anderson to a platoon role at best. If you are desperate for OF help right now, he’s worth a grab. But he’ll go back to Richmond as soon as Kotsay and Matt Diaz get healthy again.
