The Reds decided that they had enough of Corey Patterson and wanted to give Bruce a chance to show his wares. Bruce was tearing up triple-A with a .364/10/37 line and was ready for his opportunity. The only advantage the Reds got by sending Bruce down at the end of Spring Training was to allow Bruce to gain a little more confidence.
Kershaw also finally gets a shot that seems long overdue. This kid has a sick curve that has been rated the best in all of baseball. Look for Kershaw to be good the first time through the league and struggle during his second circuit. It is during his third time through that we will find out how quickly he will be one of the best in the majors. There is no doubt that he will be a stud, it is just a matter of time.
Should you pick them up for your team? It depends on your league. If you are in a keeper league, then you should bid high on each (assuming they are still available). If you are in a one-year league, I’d be hesitant. Maybe they would be a good short term pick up, but they will both begin to struggle as soon as enough teams have had a chance to see what these kids bring to the table. They will both be regulars at the All Star Game, but not for a couple of years.
