Prep For Your Draft

It may not seem like it with the lack of NFL preseason, but the 2020 NFL regular season is fast approaching. The primary fantasy football draft weekends are the final two weekends of August and Labor Day weekend. My home league annually drafts Thursday night during the first NFL game, this year Houston Texans at Kansas City Chiefs on September 10th.

There is still time to get you up and running with Draft Buddy to prep for your drafts. I recently posted a series of videos to create custom cheatsheets for your league. This is the first video in the series:

After the cheatsheets are ready, then it is time to draft. If your league’s draft is on any of MyFantasyLeague.com, Fantrax or Sleeper, then it is very easy to track your draft. Buddy syncs with drafts for each of these sites. After inputting the league identifier, you can click a button to pull in draft results. Draft Buddy then marks all the players off the cheatsheets and updates rosters.

Even if your league does not use one of those league managers, you can still input the picks as they happen. Select a player name on any of the cheatsheets and click the Draft Player button to add him to the draft report (or auction report) tab.

Tech Support

If you have any questions using Draft Buddy then we can connect through a variety of social networks, or by email.

Sign Up and Download

Once again, check the special RotoBaller sign up page to purchase this version of Draft Buddy. Once the purchase is processed then you receive access to download.

Thanks very much to RotoBaller for helping make this happen! We hope to expand the partnership to the fantasy baseball version of Draft Buddy for the next MLB season.

Import Fantasy Football Projections to Draft Buddy

August 17, 2020 By Draft Buddy Leave a Comment

importing fantasy football projections

I first created the Fantasy Football Draft Buddy over 20 years ago. Not only did it have a different name back then (anyone? see comments), but it included a unique feature that is a double-edged-sword. You can import fantasy football projections from other sources to create your cheatsheets.

Make Them Your Cheatsheets

The good about this feature is you get total control over the data that helps create your cheatsheets. I always felt it is important to stress Draft Buddy is a fantasy tool to help you make decisions about your team. It isn’t a, “here–do this,” tool. It is a support tool to help stay organized and up to date and to make better decisions – your Buddy! This feature aligns with that goal.

Import up to three sets of projections from whatever source(s) you trust. Certainly, there are many more premium subscription-based fantasy football services now than there were 20 years ago. If you use one of those, then maybe they have projections you want to use to create custom cheatsheets.

You can even edit the fantasy football projections after they are in Draft Buddy, if you want to adjust things for your own feelings about certain players. And, if you import multiple sets of projections, combine them using any weighted average you choose.

Problems Importing Projections

The difficulty with this feature is getting the projections into Draft Buddy. Since the projections come from many different possible sources, they are in a wide range of formats. For example compare CBS, ESPN, and FF Today projections.

Thankfully, FF Today’s fantasy football projections are included in Draft Buddy. But, there is no magic button to get CBS or ESPN or hundreds of other website projections into Draft Buddy.

And it isn’t as simple as copying and pasting into Excel. How do we line them up with the players and data already in Draft Buddy? How do we get the projections under the right column headings for touches, yards, and touchdowns?

Projection Pal To The Rescue

I created Projection Pal, which is a separate Excel file, to help import and make sure to line the projections up with the right players and in the right columns. Find Pal on the Draft Buddy download page. Using Pal, and with a little patience, then you can import projections. You’ll probably learn more about Microsoft Excel, to boot.

Below is a new demo video importing CBS fantasy football projections into Draft Buddy using Projection Pal. This covers most scenarios people experience importing projections. Before watching the video, here are some key points to think about with this process:

  • Player names should be full first and last names. They can be formatted last name, first name, like, “Barkley, Saquon”, but (while not impossible) hopefully not, “S. Barkley”
  • It may be necessary to clean data to remove extra info that is the same cell as each player’s name, like their team abbreviation. Sometimes there are funny characters that look like spaces but aren’t spaces, which a find-replace can often fix.
  • If names are not formatted first name-last name then Projection Pal’s clean tabs may show errors prior to clicking the Copy to Draft Buddy button. Click the button, and see if Pal cleans the data for you.
  • Many websites now offer their projections as comma-separated values (CSV) file download, which makes things much easier. If available, download, copy and paste it into Projection Pal. Split the data using Data > Text to Columns.

Sleeper Fantasy Football Integration in Draft Buddy

August 13, 2020 By Draft Buddy Leave a Comment

Sleeper fantasy football draft board

It isn’t normal to release a new version of fantasy football Draft Buddy this late in the summer. As we know, however, 2020 is far from normal. Draft Buddy version 3.0 is now available with a brand new feature – Sleeper integration.

Sleeper fantasy football

What is Sleeper? Sleeper is a fantasy football league manager that continues to grow in popularity. The UI (user interface) is crazy-good. Serious props to the coders and designers for their mobile and design skills.

You can use Sleeper for redraft, keeper, or dynasty leagues. The scoring options are practically endless. You can mock draft on Sleeper to practice drafting. Sleeper supports individual defensive players (IDP). It does pretty much everything you would expect from a fantasy league manager except auction drafts, and I’m sure that is on Sleeper’s radar.

Sync Draft Buddy and Sleeper

We want to make things easier for our Draft Buddy members who play at Sleeper. Draft Buddy now includes Sleeper fantasy football integration as of version 3.0.

This works very similar to existing integration with MyFantasyLeague.com and Fantrax, allowing Draft Buddy to sync with fantasy football leagues on those platforms. You can access franchise names, keepers and draft results to import into Draft Buddy.

Draft Buddy sync tab

To use Sleeper integration, go to the sync tab and select Sleeper from the drop-down menu. Then input your Sleeper league ID in Draft Buddy. Visit your league in a web browser and look at the URL. An example is:

https://sleeper.app/leagues/525573093652869120

For this league, the ID is 525573093652869120. Note, the similarly looking ID for the draft board is different than the league ID. Make sure you are on the league main page to find the league ID. Once input, then try the links to franchise, keepers, and draft results. You can pull draft results using the button on the draft report tab.

If you notice any players that appear as ?? that means they are not currently matched in our player database. Please let me know the unmatched players to help me update our database.

Thanks Sleeper for making the API available for us to sync Draft Buddy with your leagues!

  • Odell Beckham Jr. On Track In Rehab Show More

Cleveland Browns wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. is "right on track" in his efforts to rehab a torn ACL suffered last October. Cleveland general manager Andrew Berry told reporters that Beckham and some other injured Browns players are "all progressing really well" as they prepare for the 2021 season. Beckham will look to return to the fold and help Cleveland build upon their most successful season since returning to the league as an expansion franchise in 1999. Fantasy gamers can no longer count on Beckham as an elite producer but he could wind up as a value in 2021.

  • Steelers Sign Ben Roethlisberger To New Contract Show More

The Pittsburgh Steelers officially signed quarterback Ben Roethlisberger to a new contract for the 2021 season on Thursday. ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that Roethlisberger willingly reduced his pay to $14 million from $19 million in the final year of his deal, spreading his cash payment through 2022, according to a source. The move lowered Pittsburgh's salary cap hit by over $15 million, allowing them to make other moves to remain as competitive as possible. Big Ben was initially set for an exorbitant cap hit of $41.25 million. The 39-year-old will have one more shot at a championship and will likely retire after the 2021 season. Pittsburgh's offense could lose wideout JuJu Smith-Schuster this offseason and Roethlisberger is pretty injury prone, so he'll mostly be targeted as a fantasy backup as he heads into what will likely be his final NFL season.

  • Trevor Lawrence's Rehab Going Well Show More

Former Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence, who is projected as the No. 1 overall pick in this year's NFL draft, said his rehab from left non-throwing shoulder surgery last month is going better than expected. He underwent surgery on Feb. 16 to fix damage to the labrum of his left shoulder. Lawrence remains in California, rehabbing his shoulder at MOTUS Specialists Physical Therapy in Orange County. The focus of his rehab right now is working within pain-free ranges of motion and strengthening the scapular (shoulder blade) muscles along with the core. Lawrence is expected to remain in a brace for around two more weeks, and he could begin throwing in six to eight weeks if the rehab goes as planned. Expected to land with Jacksonville at No. 1 overall, Lawrence could be fantasy relevant in single-year leagues right away as a QB2 with upside.

  • Saints Cut Jared Cook, Josh Hill Show More

New Orleans Saints executive vice president/general manager Mickey Loomis announced on Wednesday that the team has terminated the contracts of tight ends Jared Cook and Josh Hill. Cook is a 12-year veteran who was originally selected in the third round of the 2009 draft out of South Carolina. Since joining the Saints in 2019, he has recorded 80 catches for 1,209 yards (15.1 average) and 16 touchdowns, which is tied for the second-most TDs at the position during that span. The 33-year-old was due an $8.04 million roster bonus on the second day of the new league year. He was a Pro Bowler in 2019, when he had 43 catches for 705 yards and nine touchdowns. With both Cook and Hill now out of the picture in New Orleans, Adam Trautman could be a name to watch as a sleeper at the position in 2021.
