  • Yoshinobo Yamamoto To Make Spring Debut On Wednesday

Los Angeles Dodgers right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto is scheduled to make his Cactus League debut on Wednesday against the Texas Rangers. After signing a 12-year, $325 million deal with the Dodgers this offseason, Yamamoto is expected to serve as the team's ace to open the 2024 season. The 25-year-old will be eased into the big leagues in the States with the Dodgers going with a six-man starting rotation. He won the Pacific League MVP award in each of the last three seasons while pitching in Japan and is expected to start one of the team's two games to open the year in Korea against the San Diego Padres on March 20-21. Despite his small frame, Yamamoto hits the upper-90s with his fastball with ease and features impeccable command with his other offerings. While being backed by LA's strong offense, Yamamoto has ace potential right away in fantasy.

  • Yoshinobu Yamamoto Expected To Start In Korea Series

The Los Angeles Dodgers plan for right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto to start a game in their season-opening, two-game series against the division-rival San Diego Padres in South Korea, according to people familiar with the situation who spoke under the condition of anonymity. The 5-foot-10 Japanese pitcher with a less-than-imposing frame will be transitioning from pitching once a week in Japan to pitching once every five or six days in his first year in LA. He'll also have to get used to a slicker ball, and he said he encountered trouble throwing his splitter on Sunday in his second bullpen session of the spring. "I think I'll adjust quickly," Yamamoto said. The Dodgers are expected to use a modified version of a six-man starting rotation, which should afford the 25-year-old rookie a little extra rest here and there. Given the hype and his big contract, Yamamoto is going to be drafted as a fantasy ace.

  • Walker Buehler May Be Delayed To Begin 2024 Season

    Headshot for Walker Buehler

Los Angeles Dodgers right-hander Walker Buehler (elbow), who had his second Tommy John surgery in August of 2022, may be delayed (by design) to open the 2024 regular season, according to general manager Brandon Gomes. Recent additions of Japanese lefty Yoshinobu Yamamoto and right-hander Tyler Glasnow allow the Dodgers to "slow play" Buehler entering the 2024 campaign. He's expected to be at full strength for spring training after returning to the mound late in 2023 in the minors by throwing two innings for Triple-A Oklahoma City in September. Buehler struggled in his recovery after throwing sessions, though, and was eventually shut down. The Dodgers are most certainly going to limit his innings in 2024, but to what extent isn't known. Fantasy managers need to keep in mind that Buehler could be held back for the entire first month of the season.

  • Dodgers To Sign Yoshinobu Yamamoto To 12-Year Deal

For the second time this month, the Dodgers have made a record-setting free agent strike. Los Angeles is reportedly in agreement with Yoshinobu Yamamoto on a 12-year, $325MM contract. • Yoshinobu Yamamoto Signing With LA For Over $300 Million

    Headshot for Tyler Glasnow

Japanese free-agent right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto will sign with the Los Angeles Dodgers for more than $300 million. ESPN's Jeff Passan reports that the agreement is for 12 years and $325 million. Yamamoto could be one of the most dominant pitchers to come out of Japan, which would be saying a lot. Eventually, fellow countryman and two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani will be headlining the top of LA's starting rotation alongside Yamamoto and Tyler Glasnow. It's about the best landing spot for Yamamoto's 2024 fantasy value as well. He was dominant with the Orix Buffaloes of Nippon Professional Baseball in 2023 and had a 1.16 ERA, 0.86 WHIP and 176 strikeouts in 171 innings. He doesn't have the prototypical size of a front-line starter in the big leagues, but he has plenty of strikeout stuff and his nasty sinker should play well at Chavez Ravine.

  • Giants Out Of The Bidding On Yoshinobu Yamamoto?

The San Francisco Giants have been told they are out of the bidding for Japanese free-agent right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto, according to a source familiar with the discussions. The Giants were pushing hard to add Yamamoto to the top of their starting rotation next to Logan Webb, but the expectation is that he will end up with the Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Mets or New York Yankees. The Boston Red Sox and Philadelphia Phillies also met with Yamamoto, but they are considered more of long shots for his services. The Giants continue to be spurned by big-time free agents, as they've lost out on Bryce Harper, Aaron Judge and Shohei Othani in recent seasons. We can now add Yamamoto to the list. Perhaps the best pitcher to ever come out of Japan, Yamamoto could command a deal worth up to $300 million in the next week.

  • Phillies Have Made An Offer To Yoshinobu Yamamoto

The Philadelphia Phillies have made an offer to Japanese free-agent right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto. It's a bid odd, considering president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski has said several times that their five-man starting rotation is set after re-signing right-hander Aaron Nola for $172 million earlier this offseason. Philadelphia will have their highest payroll ever in 2024, so it has been unlikely that they'd be able to add another star player like Yamamoto. They've been interested in Yamamoto for months, though, and increased their scouting presence in Japan over the last two years. However, the Phils have never signed a Japanese player to a major-league contract and haven't had a Japanese player on their roster since 2009. That will likely work against them in their pursuit of Yamamoto, and they are unlikely to be his highest bidder.

  • Giants All-In On Yoshinobu Yamamoto

According to those familiar with San Francisco Giants president Farhan Zaidi's thinking, he has never been so all-in on a free agent in his six years while leading the Giants' baseball operations group as he has been this winter for Japanese right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto. The Giants have the financial flexibility to sign Yamamoto and to keep adding and they'd view a Logan Webb-Yamamoto pairing atop their starting rotation as a strength that could get them over the hump in the tough National League West. The Giants won't lose out on Yamamoto because their offer was light, and they are looking to add some sizzle to a roster that has played uninspired baseball the last two years. Yamamoto is expected to command a deal that could be close to $300 million, and he'd certainly be a great fit for the Giants and fantasy managers in that ballpark.

The New York Mets are reportedly preparing a "very serious offer" for Japanese free-agent pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto. It's certainly no surprise to see the deep-pocketed Mets making a big-time bid for one of the top international free agents of all time. The 25-year-old right-hander has rattled off three consecutive Nippon Professional Baseball MVP awards with the Orix Buffaloes and is coming off a 2023 season that saw him work to a tidy 1.21 ERA across 23 starts with 169 strikeouts against 28 walks in 164 innings of work. • Yoshinobu Yamamoto Expected To Sign Before New Year

Japanese free-agent right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto is expected to sign with a team before the new year and perhaps as early as this week. Yamamoto is arguably the greatest pitcher ever in Nippon Professional Baseball -- he's won three straight MVP awards and three straight Sawamura awards, Japan's equivalent of the Cy Young -- despite standing at 5-foot-10, 176 pounds. The 25-year-old has a 99 mph fastball, a splitter with absurd downward movement and a curveball that breaks 5 1/2 feet. He's expected to sign a deal north of $200 million and has already met with big-market teams such as the Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Yankees, New York Mets, San Francisco Giants, Chicago Cubs, Boston Red Sox and Philadelphia Phillies. Yamamoto could reach his final decision before Christmas next Monday.

The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal reported Sunday that the New York Yankees will be aggressive in adding to their pitching staff this offseason regardless of whether they sign top free-agent Yoshinobu Yamamoto. Yamamoto would be a significant addition to improve their rotation, but the team could still benefit from additional support given recent trades as well as injuries and poor performance last season. Rosenthal also mentioned that the team could attempt to stack their bullpen with strong free-agent arms as an alternative to adding rotation arms.

He's already met with the New York Yankees, San Francisco Giants, Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Mets and Boston Red Sox. The 25-year-old has been the hands-down best pitcher in Nippon Professional Baseball in recent years while pitching for the Orix Buffaloes and will immediately hop into a starting rotation in the majors in the United States with whichever team he chooses to play for in 2024 and beyond. Yamamoto is expected to sign a deal for more than $200 million total. Adding him to a rotation that already includes Aaron Nola and Zack Wheeler would be pretty attractive for the Phillies.

A trio of Los Angeles Dodgers superstars attended a meeting with free-agent pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto on Tuesday at Dodger Stadium, as Shohei Ohtani, Freddie Freeman, and Mookie Betts all were part of the discussion. Of course, Ohtani's presence is the key, as he is a countryman of Yamamoto's and a teammate of his in March's World Baseball Classic championship with Team Japan. The right-hander and Ohtani have dominated the rumor mill this offseason, and there are reportedly plenty of clubs pursuing Yamamoto's services on the open market. A two-time NPB MVP, Yamamoto, 25, worked to a dominant 1.21 ERA across 23 outings with the Orix Buffaloes last season.

  • Mets To Pursue Blake Snell If Yoshinobu Yamamoto Signs Elsewhere

    Headshot for Blake Snell

The New York Mets will reportedly target free-agent starting pitcher Blake Snell if they do not end up signing Yoshinobu Yamamoto this offseason. While Yamamoto is the team's top pitching target, his high intrigue and potentially hefty deal could result in the Mets not landing him. Snell is the reigning National League Cy Young winner and put together a 14-9 record with a 2.25 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, 13.3% walk rate, and 31.5% strikeout rate in 32 starts with the Padres. Snell is also reportedly on the radar for the Red Sox, but they are also engaged in talks with Yamamoto. At this point, it seems as though the market for Snell will become clearer once Yamamoto signs with a team.
