  • Victor Scott II Sitting Again Wednesday

    Headshot for Victor Scott

St. Louis Cardinals rookie outfielder Victor Scott II will start on the bench again on Wednesday against the Oakland Athletics. The 23-year-old is now starting on the bench for the second game in a row, with Michael Siani getting the start in center field and hitting ninth for the Cardinals against A's right-hander Paul Blackburn. Scott's defense has been strong for St. Louis in center field, but he's gone just 5-for-65 (.089) with three doubles, two RBI, two stolen bases and 14 strikeouts in his first 62 big-league plate appearances over 18 games. He could begin to lose more playing time in center field if he doesn't pick it up offensively, and Scott will eventually head back to the minors when Tommy Edman (wrist) and Dylan Carlson (shoulder) return.

  • Victor Scott II Not In Sunday's Lineup

    Headshot for Victor Scott

St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Victor Scott II is not in Sunday's lineup as the Cardinals will play in the final game of a three-game set against the Arizona Diamondbacks. The third-ranked prospect in the St. Louis system has started in every game so far in center field and carries a disappointing .098/.158/.157 with two stolen bases and two RBI. 24-year-old Michael Siani will play center field in today's rubber match and will bat in the nine-hole. Siani, who has a .125 AVG in the young season, will have a tall task ahead of him today as he will face Arizona ace Zac Gallen.

  • Victor Scott II Leading Off In Home Opener

    Headshot for Victor Scott

St. Louis Cardinals outfield prospect Victor Scott II will start in center field and bat leadoff on Thursday for the team's home opener versus the Miami Marlins and left-hander Ryan Weathers. Scott is getting the nod in the top spot in the order with Brendan Donovan (elbow) sitting out after getting hit by two pitches in Wednesday's loss to the San Diego Padres. The 23-year-old is listed as the team's No. 3 prospect, per MLB Pipeline, and he made his major-league debut to begin the 2024 season because of injuries to Tommy Edman (wrist), Lars Nootbaar (ribs) and Dylan Carlson (shoulder). He'll be more attractive in the leadoff spot for DFS games on Thursday, but he's off to a 3-for-25 (.120) start with a stolen base and nine strikeouts in his first 28 MLB plate appearances.

  • Lars Nootbaar To Begin Rehab Assignment On Tuesday

    Headshot for Lars Nootbaar

St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Lars Nootbaar (ribs) will begin a minor-league rehab assignment on Tuesday. The left-handed outfielder will draw the start in center field for Tuesday's game with Triple-A Memphis. The 26-year-old is working his way back from two fractures in his ribcage that has sidelined him since early March. The expectation is that Nootbaar is going to need at least a handful of games before returning to the Cardinals lineup. It's uncertain who will get sent down in a corresponding move, but it'll likely be youngster Victor Scott.

  • Tommy Edman Set For MRI

    Headshot for Tommy Edman

St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Tommy Edman (wrist) is set to have an MRI on Wednesday to verify that his wrist is healing and progressing positively. If the MRI yields positive results, Edman will begin a swinging program. The 28-year-old has been recovering from wrist surgery, which was performed in October. However, no date for his return has yet to be determined, as the Cardinals will have a better idea when he will return once the MRI results are in. The Cardinals and fantasy managers will benefit from his speed on the base paths once he returns to St. Louis' lineup. Victor Scott II should continue to handle centerfield duties while Edman is sidelined. After swiping 107 bags in over 163 minor-league games, Scott should be added to all leagues, especially for managers searching for speed.

  • Victor Scott II To Start On Opening Day For Cardinals

    Headshot for Victor Scott

St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Victor Scott II has now made the team's Opening Day roster with Dylan Carlson (shoulder) heading to the injured list, and the team's No. 4 prospect will start in center field on Opening Day this Thursday in Los Angeles against the Dodgers. In addition to Carlson, Tommy Edman (wrist) and Lars Nootbaar (ribs) are on the IL, so Scott and Michael Siani should see extra opportunities early on in 2024. Scott is the more attractive waiver-wire pickup in mixed fantasy leagues and hit an impressive .316/.409/.368 in 44 trips to the plate in the Grapefruit League this spring. The 23-year-old has 50-steal upside over a full season and could stick around in St. Louis if he gets off to a hot start once the rest of the team's outfielders return from their respective injuries.

  • Victor Scott II Reassigned To Minor-League Camp

    Headshot for Victor Scott

The St. Louis Cardinals announced on Saturday that they have reassigned outfield prospect Victor Scott II to minor-league camp. Even though the 23-year-old might be the team's best pure center fielder, the Cardinals are going to have him start the year at Triple-A Memphis so that he can play everyday. Lars Nootbaar (ribs) and Tommy Edman (wrist) are both starting the year on the injured list, but Nootbaar isn't expected to be out long, and the Cardinals would rather see Scott get regular playing time in the minors. Scott looked good this spring, batting .316 with four stolen bases in 10 Grapefruit League games and is certainly worth stashing in deep-mixed and NL-only leagues for his speed. According to MLB Pipeline, he's the team's No. 4 prospect entering the season.

  • Victor Scott II Projected To Start In The Minors

    Headshot for Victor Scott

Even with outfielders Lars Nootbaar (ribs) and Tommy Edman (wrist) starting the year on the injured list, The Athletic's Katie Woo projects St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Victor Scott II to be left off the Opening Day roster out of camp. Scott has had an excellent spring training and has proved to be a dynamic player as the organization's best center fielder. He's able to impact the game far beyond his defense, with his speed and baserunning being a real threat. However, Nootbaar isn't expected to miss much time, and president of baseball operations John Mozeliak has a preference to promote top prospects only if there is clear everyday playing time. Alec Burleson and Dylan Carlson have also had strong offensive springs and Brendan Donovan is healthy. Scott is the team's No. 4 prospect, per MLB Pipeline, and should surface in the big leagues at some point in 2024.

  • Dylan Carlson, Victor Scott II, Michael Siani Competing For CF Job

    Headshot for Dylan Carlson

St. Louis Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said that the Opening Day center field job is still open and he is not ready to name a starter in that spot yet. With Tommy Edman (wrist) set to open the season on the injured list after having surgery on his right wrist in the offseason, Dylan Carlson, Victor Scott II and Michael Siani are competing for the job. Carlson is getting the start in center field in the team's Grapefruit League game on Saturday and is the most likely candidate to see most of the playing time in center until Edman returns. The 25-year-old year-old Carlson also had offseason surgery on his ankle in September, but he's good to go and is gaining steam in deep-mixed leagues with Edman injured. Scott, 23, has plenty of speed to spare and has really impressed in spring training. Siani, 24, would be the long shot, but he could make the Opening Day roster out of camp as a fourth or fifth outfielder.
