  • Paul Skenes Needs More Time At Triple-A

The Pittsburgh Pirates currently have a hole in their starting rotation with lefty Marco Gonzales (forearm) on the injured list, but MLB Pipeline's No. 3 prospect, right-hander Paul Skenes, isn't getting called up because he needs to continue to build up for his first full professional season. Skenes has yet to allow a run with Triple-A Indianapolis through his first three outings, striking out 19 with just six baserunners allowed over 9 1/3 innings. However, he was capped at just three innings in his first two outings and has had his pitch count purposefully limited early on. "We don't want to go from zero to 100 right away. Paul's so important to us long term, so we want to be really thoughtful about that," general manager Ben Cherington said. The 21-year-old will almost certainly be with Pittsburgh this year, but fantasy managers in all formats are going to need to be patient.

  • Paul Skenes Continues To Dominate Triple-A

Pittsburgh Pirates pitching prospect Paul Skenes continued his dominance in Triple-A on Friday, throwing three shutout innings with three hits, one free pass, and eight strikeouts. The number three overall prospect is yet to surrender a run this season and has a minuscule 0.64 WHIP across nine and innings, with a total of 19 punchouts. Skenes, often touted as the best pitching prospect in baseball, is on the verge of making his major league debut, showcasing his elite fantasy ceiling with his dominant swing-and-miss potential. Already rostered in all dynasty and keeper formats, Skenes is a player worth checking your waiver wire for in shallower re-draft formats, as he will be a valuable player down the stretch.

  • Quinn Priester Excels In First Start

    Headshot for Quinn Priester

Pittsburgh Pirates starting pitching prospect Quinn Priester performed well in his first start of the season for Triple-A Indianapolis on Sunday. The right-hander went 5 2/3 innings and allowed one hit, one run, one walk and struck out nine on the evening. Priester missed a spot in the big-league rotation, but remains one of their best pitching prospects behind Paul Skenes. Priester struggled in his brief time in the big leagues this past season, but some more seasoning in Triple-A may be just what the young right-hander needs. Even though Paul Skenes is the hot name amongst Pirates prospects, Priester might have the upper hand on a promotion, should the idea present itself early in the season.

  • Paul Skenes On Fast Track To Big Leagues

Pittsburgh Pirates starting pitching prospect Paul Skenes should be considered a fast riser after his dominant season debut on Saturday for Triple-A Indianapolis. It was a strong performance for last year's first overall pick that saw him strikeout five in three innings with no hits or walks allowed. The LSU product had a strong spring and would arguably be in the big leagues if the Pirates planned to be competitive in 2024. With the Pirates in a rebuild and unlikely to compete much this season, the club will make sure to be extra cautious about promoting their future ace. Skenes will be a must-roster if/when he is promoted this season, but managers should also be aware that he will likely be on an innings count. Regardless he is arguably the best pitcher in the minor leagues and has all the makings of an ace moving forward in his career.

  • Paul Skenes To Start At Triple-A

Pittsburgh Pirates pitching prospect Paul Skenes, the consensus top prospect in all of baseball after going No. 1 overall in last year's draft, will start the 2024 season with Triple-A Indianapolis, according to general manager Ben Cherington. No. 3 prospect Jared Jones, not Skenes, ended up winning a starting rotation spot for the Pirates to open the year, but the 21-year-old Skenes may not be far behind from making his major-league debut in Pittsburgh. Skenes finished his first year in the minors with Double-A Altoona in 2023 but threw only 6 2/3 innings after helping LSU win the national title in college baseball. So far, Skenes has looked like his dominant self this spring and is considered one of the best pitching prospects since Stephen Strasburg. Because Skenes is fully expected to be up in the majors sooner than later, he's worth stashing in all fantasy leagues this year.

  • Offseason In Review: Pittsburgh Pirates

    Headshot for Chase Anderson

The Pirates’ ongoing rebuild showed some encouraging signs last year but it didn’t prompt the front office to go out and win the offseason. They made some modest additions as their focus remains clearly on the future, but did sign another core member of their club to a sizable extension. Major League Signings LHP Aroldis…

  • Paul Skenes Optioned To Minors Camp

Pittsburgh Pirates starting pitcher Paul Skenes has been optioned to minor league camp on Sunday. Skenes will join a handful of other players that will head to the minors and not make the Opening Day roster. It's not surprising to see Skenes getting reassigned as he was a longshot to make the roster. The right-hander was the top selection of the 2023 MLB Draft. He is currently the No. 3 prospect in the league and is likely to be up pitching in Pittsburgh at some point in 2024. The 21-year-old posted a 1.00 WHIP and a 3/0 K/BB ratio across three scoreless innings this spring. Fantasy managers should keep an eye on Skenes as he should be back at the MLB level in 2024.

  • Paul Skenes Impresses On Thursday

Pittsburgh Pirates pitching prospect Paul Skenes had two strikeouts in one inning on Thursday against the Orioles in Spring Breakout action. One of those strikeouts was against fellow top prospect, shortstop Jackson Holliday. Skenes, 21, was the first overall pick out of LSU last season, but has shown up to camp as the most popular player on the Pittsburgh Pirates. Although he has had limited action, it has all been impressive and proven why the Pirates took him first overall. Although the right-hander is likely to open in the season in the minor leagues, it shouldn't be long until he is striking out big-league hitters. Skenes should absolutely be rostered in dynasty leagues and managers in redraft leagues should keep a strong eye on the fireballer.

  • Paul Skenes Won't Make Pirates' Opening Day Roster

Pirates right-hander Paul Skenes won’t make the Opening Day roster, with Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette relaying that general manager Ben Cherington has already informed the righty. The young hurler will remain in big league camp for the time being but will start the season in the minor leagues. “I've thrown 6 2/3 innings…

  • Paul Skenes To Start In The Minors

Pittsburgh Pirates general manager Ben Cherington said that the team has told top pitching prospect Paul Skenes that he will start the 2024 season in the minors leagues. Cherington added that there are boxes Skenes must still check, but he will remain in major-league camp in spring training to get his work in. In three Grapefruit League innings, the 21-year-old first overall pick in 2023 has given up a solo home run while striking out three. Skenes, the consensus top pitching prospect in all of baseball, is considered the best overall pitching prospect in the game since Stephen Strasburg. However, he threw only 6 2/3 innings in the minors last year after getting drafted, and the Pirates want to see him get in a little bit more developmental work on the farm before likely bringing him up to the big leagues early in 2024.

  • Paul Skenes Flashes Triple-Digit Heat In Spring Debut

Pittsburgh Pirates pitching prospect Paul Skenes, the first overall pick in last year's draft, hit 102 mph twice with his fastball in a scoreless first inning in his Grapefruit League debut on Thursday against the Baltimore Orioles. Baltimore catcher Adley Rutschman, a fellow first overall pick, took a 99 mph Skenes fastball to the warning track in right field. In his one inning of work, four of Skenes' 10 pitches were clocked at triple digits on the stadium radar gun. The 21-year-old can bring the gas for sure, and he has a realistic shot at breaking camp in the Pirates' Opening Day starting rotation in 2024. Skenes is the consensus top pitching prospect in all of baseball and is ranked at RotoBaller as the No. 99 fantasy starter heading into the season.

  • Paul Skenes Invited To Spring Training

Pittsburgh Pirates pitching prospect Paul Skenes is one of a group of players that received non-roster invites to major-league spring training this year. In addition to Skenes, the Pirates also invited top prospects Termarr Johnson, Bubba Chandler, Jared Jones and Anthony Solometo. Skenes is the biggest name after Pittsburgh took him first overall in last year's draft out of LSU. The 21-year-old is the consensus top pitching prospect in all of baseball and is considered the best pitching prospect since Stephen Strasburg. Skenes made it to Double-A Altoona in 2023 and is fully expected to join the Pirates' starting rotation for the first time in 2024. The strikeout upside alone is tantalizing enough for Skenes to be stashed in all fantasy formats this spring.
