  • Bryan Woo Could Begin Rehab Assignment Soon

    Headshot for Bryan Woo

Seattle Mariners general manager Justin Hollander provided some injury updates on injured players, specifically starter Bryan Woo (elbow). The team believes that Woo will be heading to Triple-A Tacoma this week to begin a rehab assignment. Hollander reported that everything went well for Woo in a two-inning "up-down," where a pitcher will simulate having a break between two innings like in a real game. Woo will throw live batting practice in the coming days, and if all goes well, he could get a three-inning rehab start in Tacoma next week. The team believes that Woo might need two rehab starts before he gets back on the mound for the Mariners. Woo was diagnosed with elbow inflammation in spring training and placed on the IL before the start of the season. Woo would slot back into the rotation when he can return and look to build off his momentum from last season.

  • Bryan Woo Resumes Throwing

    Headshot for Bryan Woo

Seattle Mariners starting pitcher Bryan Woo (elbow) is throwing again. Following three spring training appearances, Woo hit the 15-day injured list due to inflammation in his right elbow to begin the season and has just begun throwing again after a brief shutdown period. It's unclear just how far out the 24-year-old right-hander is from making his 2024 debut, but he figures to be an option for the M's by early-to-mid April. Woo was one of Seattle's top pitching prospects in 2023, totaling a respectable 4.21 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, and 93:31 K:BB through 87 2/3 innings during his rookie year. 2020 No. 6 overall pick Emerson Hancock is handling the vacated rotation spot for now, but Woo should be stashed in the majority of fantasy leagues with a pitcher-friendly ballpark awaiting him.

  • Bryan Woo Lands On Injured List With Elbow Inflammation

    Headshot for Bryan Woo

Seattle Mariners right-hander Bryan Woo (elbow) will begin the season on the injured list due to elbow inflammation. Woo is an option for rotation depth in deep-mixed fantasy leagues after he went 4-5 with a 4.21 ERA (4.36 FIP) and 1.21 WHIP with 31 walks and 93 strikeouts in 87 2/3 innings in his first 18 major-league starts for the Mariners in 2023. However, his stock has now dropped with him starting the year on the shelf. The former sixth-round pick in 2021 out of Cal Poly will settle into the back end of Seattle's rotation whenever he does make his 2024 debut. The 24-year-old has a diverse arsenal of pitches and could improve his strikeout rate, but if he's inconsistent, the M's have other interesting starting arms that could bump him from the rotation.

  • Bryan Woo Perfect In Third Spring Start

    Headshot for Bryan Woo

Seattle Mariners starting pitcher Bryan Woo threw four innings of perfect baseball in his third spring outing on Thursday in a 4-2 Cactus League win over the Brewers. The 24-year-old allowed zero hits, zero runs, and did not walk a batter while striking out five over four frames. After getting roughed up his first time out, Woo has bounced back nicely, not allowing a run or a hit over two and two-thirds IP his second time out and now four more clean innings of work Thursday. The righty has walked just one batter and struck out 11 over eight and a third spring innings. He may get one more tune-up before the regular season, but managers who drafted the youngster to fill out the back end of their fantasy rotations after a solid debut in 2023 should be feeling confident about their choice.

  • Offseason In Review: Seattle Mariners

    Headshot for Cory Abbott

The Mariners’ front office operated under tight payroll restrictions from ownership in light of uncertainty regarding the team’s television contract this offseason. That didn’t stop “Trader Jerry” Dipoto, the team’s president of baseball operations, from aggressively overhauling the roster with a series of trades colored by monetary implications. (This year’s Mariners Review might include the…

  • Bryan Woo Tosses Hitless Outing Thursday

    Headshot for Bryan Woo

Seattle Mariners right-hander Bryan Woo enjoyed an impressive performance in a Cactus League contest against the Los Angeles Angels on Thursday. The 24-year-old tossed 2 2/3 frames of hitless ball to go along with three strikeouts against just one walk in his second appearance of the spring, bouncing back from a tough outing in which he yielded four earned runs on six hits and a homer across just 1 1/2 innings against the Rockies on March 1. He is expected to line up as the Mariners' fifth starter on the heels of a rookie season that saw him work to a 4.21 ERA alongside a 16.7% K-BB% across 18 starts. Woo made the jump to the big leagues straight from Double-A where he dominated to the tune of a 2.05 ERA and 27.3% K-BB% across nine starts. He has the combination of strikeout stuff and quality control that can be a big boon to fantasy managers in the 2024 season.

  • Bryan Woo Looking To Improve Versus Lefties

    Headshot for Bryan Woo

Seattle Mariners right-hander Bryan Woo, who went 4-5 with a 4.21 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 93 strikeouts in his first 18 major-league starts in 2023, is hoping to improve against left-handed hitters in 2024. Lefties slashed .283/.389/.540 with a .928 OPS against Woo last year. The 24-year-old had just 16 minor-league games under his belt, with none coming above High-A, before he made his MLB debut last summer. The 131 2/3 total innings he threw in 2023 were by far the most he'd thrown in a single season, and Woo admits he wore down late in the year. He's penciled in as Seattle's No. 5 starter to open the 2024 campaign. The inexperienced starter has a five-pitch mix and could improve on his 25% strikeout rate in Year 2. Woo is worth a flier late in deep-mixed league drafts as rotation depth.
