  • Mason Miller Solidifying Himself As Closer

    Headshot for Mason Miller

Oakland Athletics closer Mason Miller continued to solidify himself as the team's go-to ninth-inning option in Wednesday's 6-3 win over the visiting St. Louis Cardinals, picking up his fourth save of the season to protect the victory. Miller allowed a leadoff walk to Ivan Herrera but quickly settled in to retire the next three batters, striking out two. After giving up two runs in his first appearance of the 2024 campaign, the fire-balling 25-year-old right-hander has rattled off eight consecutive scoreless frames in the month of April and now owns a 2.00 ERA and 1.11 WHIP with 17 punchouts over nine innings overall (seven appearances). The A's aren't going to win very many games this season, but Miller's current pace suggests there is a pathway to the neighborhood of 25-30 saves if he maintains a grip on Oakland's closing job and doesn't get shifted back to the starting rotation.

  • Mason Miller Makes Nats Look Foolish

    Headshot for Mason Miller

Oakland Athletics closer Mason Miller picked up his third save of the season on Sunday in a 7-6 victory over the Washington Nationals. Miller looked dominant in his inning of work, striking out all three Nationals he faced. The 25-year-old was consistently touching triple digits while also mixing in a nasty slider, a combination that is looking lethal early in the season. Even though he pitches for Oakland, he is a must-roster player at this point. If he is somehow still available in your league, grab him now and have fun watching him do his thing.

  • Dany Jimenez Blows Save Friday

    Headshot for Dany Jimenez

Oakland Athletics reliever Dany Jimenez was called upon to lock down the game in the ninth inning on Friday against the Nationals, only to blow the save opportunity, although thankfully the A's hung on to win the game 2-1. With their closer Mason Miller unavailable to pitch due to recent workload, Jimenez was tasked with holding down a 1-0 lead and promptly gave up a home run to the first batter he saw. It was the only run he allowed in the inning, but the righty also allowed a double while striking out two batters. The 30-year-old saved 11 games for the A's back in 2022, but just once last year and he probably won't get many more opportunities this season with Mason Miller looking like a legit stopper in the ninth.

  • Mason Miller Locks Down Second Save

    Headshot for Mason Miller

Oakland Athletics closer Mason Miller tossed a perfect ninth inning against the Texas Rangers on Thursday to pick up his second save of the season. The electric right-hander threw 13-of-16 pitches for strikes and picked up two punchouts in the process. Save opportunities may not be plentiful in Oakland this season, but Miller still possesses elite strikeout upside with worthwhile ratios. He will be a useful fantasy reliever this season and has the potential to accomplish a lot more in dynasty formats.

  • Mason Miller Earns First Save Of Season Tuesday

    Headshot for Mason Miller

Oakland Athletics relief pitcher Mason Miller picked up his first save of the season in Tuesday's 4-3 win over the Rangers. Miller came in to pitch the bottom of the ninth inning up by one and turned in a 1-2-3- outing with two strikeouts. The electric 25-year-old has looked solid out of the bullpen this season with a 3.00 ERA, 10 strikeouts, and three walks in six innings pitched. The A's likely will not offer a ton of save opportunities, but Miller has the best stuff in the team's bullpen and will hopefully see plenty of high-leverage situations throughout the season. His high strikeout upside and ability to pitch multiple innings should provide fantasy value despite limited save opportunities.

  • Mason Miller Tosses Two Frames

    Headshot for Mason Miller

Oakland Athletics pitcher Mason Miller came on in a tie game in the top of the ninth inning and tossed two innings. Miller allowed one hit, one walk and struck out four in his second outing of the season. There had been speculation this offseason that Miller could wind up the teams closer as he transforms from a starter and pitching in the ninth inning of a tie game is a good indication that he will be trusted in important spots. The Athletics have still not named a closer, but managers shouldn't expect many saves from whoever will be getting the ball in the ninth inning for one of the worst franchises in the league. For now, Miller can be a speculative add in the deepest of leagues, but there might be more valuable options in leagues that count holds in addition to saves.

  • Mason Miller Electric On Friday

    Headshot for Mason Miller

Oakland A's pitcher Mason Miller was electric in his lone inning of work in Friday's Cactus League game versus the Kansas City Royals. The 25-year-old struck out the side on 16 pitches, reaching 101 mph on nine of his fastballs and even reached 103 mph on another. Miller showed power stuff in his 10-outing debut in his debut 2023 season but the oft-injured right-hander was sidelined for four months due to a UCL sprain in his right elbow. As a result, Miller will transition to a bullpen role in the 2024 campaign while A's skipper Bob Melvin said he would like to see Miller move up the bullpen hierarchy rather than use him as the team's closer right now. While he could turn into a dynamite closer at some point, he should not be drafted as such in 2024, especially on a poor A's club.

  • A's To Ease Mason Miller Into Closer's Role?

    Headshot for Mason Miller

Oakland Athletics right-hander Mason Miller, along with Dany Jimenez and Trevor Gott, could get an opportunity to close out games this season. However, when asked about the possibility of Miller seeing save chances, manager Mark Kotsay indicated he'd like to see Miller succeed in high-leverage spots and gradually move up the ladder rather than anoint him the closer from Day 1. Initially, the 25-year-old is expected to be used in two- to three-innings stints in relief before Kotsay feels comfortable giving him any save opportunities. The A's want Miller to be a starter in the long-term, but his extensive injury history has forced their hand to keep him in a relief role for now to try and keep him healthy. Miller has the best stuff in the A's bullpen, but without many save chances, he might just be a ratios/holds contributor in deeper fantasy leagues in 2024.

  • Mason Miller's Velocity Looking Electric As Reliever

    Headshot for Mason Miller

Oakland Athletics right-hander Mason Miller will be a starter in the long-term for the team, but he's ticketed for a bullpen role in 2024. He spent four months on the injured list in 2023 due to a UCL sprain in his right elbow. Miller finished his rookie year with a 3.78 ERA in 10 games (six starts) with 38 strikeouts and 16 walks in 33 1/3 innings, and that type of late-inning workload is likely to continue. So far in camp, the 25-year-old, who averaged 98.3 mph with his fastball last year, has been lighting up the radar gun. The team's No. 2 prospect, per MLB Pipeline, also has a wipeout slider, cutter and changeup, which makes him a natural fit for the closer's role. Miller should see some save chances, but Dany Jimenez and Trevor Gott could also factor into the ninth-inning picture in Oakland. For now, Miller is a speculative closer option with plenty of strikeout upside in deeper leagues.

  • Dany Jimenez, Trevor Gott In The Closer Mix

    Headshot for Trevor Gott

The Oakland Athletics don't have a clear No. 1 option for saves in 2024 and they could look to mix and match between several options. Along with young right-hander Mason Miller, righties Dany Jimenez and Trevor Gott could also be involved. "Dany [Jimnez] is the guy right now who has done it the most. Trevor [Gott] has experience pitching in the back of a game, and when he signed here, we talked about giving him that opportunity. Mason Miller's stuff sort of lends itself to thinking he can close. Those three guys right now are probably the most likely candidates," general manager David Forst said. Jimenez, 30, has the most experience of the trio and has 12 career saves in the last two seasons. He's probably the safest flier for saves on a bad team. Miller, meanwhile, has the best pure upside and stuff, but he' also the riskiest because of his injury history.

  • Mason Miller, Trevor Gott, Dany Jimenez In Closer Mix

    Headshot for Trevor Gott

Oakland Athletics general manager David Forst said that right-handers Mason Miller, Trevor Gott and Dany Jimenez will be in the closer mix with spring training approaching quickly. The A's want to see Miller get through a full season healthy, and Forst didn't rule out a return to a starting role for Miller after 2024. The 25-year-old missed most of his rookie season in 2023 due to a UCL sprain in his right elbow. Aside from being a major injury risk -- he has gone over 60 innings only twice since college -- Miller has elite stuff on a really bad team in a favorable pitcher's park. He has the most upside but also the most risk out of Gott and Jimenez, and a closer committee in Oakland is about as unattractive as it gets for fantasy managers speculating on saves from a high-leverage bullpen role.
