  • Junior Caminero Makes Case For Promotion

    Headshot for Junior Caminero

Tampa Bay Rays third base prospect Junior Caminero returned to the lineup on Sunday with a bang. After being activated from the 7-day injured list with a quad injury that kept him sidelined, Caminero did not miss a beat by going 2-for-6 with a home run and five RBI. The 20-year-old is rated a Top-5 prospect universally and many can argue that he is not in the big leagues due to service time and not performance at this point. With Brandon Lowe (oblique), Jonathan Aranda (finger) and Taylor Wells (hip) all on the injured list, Caminero might force his way up to the big leagues by continuing to perform as he has. Caminero offers good contact and power and should be rostered in all formats when he indeed does get promoted.

  • Junior Caminero Activated From Triple-A Injured List

    Headshot for Junior Caminero

Tampa Bay Rays infield prospect Junior Caminero (quadriceps) was activated off of the injured list at Triple-A Durham on Sunday. Caminero will start at third base and bat second for Sunday's game against Triple-A Lehigh Valley. The 20-year-old is the Rays top prospect and the No. 4 overall prospect in all of baseball. While the injury derailed his season slightly, Caminero should still be up in the majors at some point in 2024. He is worthy of a stash spot in deeper leagues and is a cornerstone piece in dynasty formats.

  • Junior Caminero Takes Batting Practice

    Headshot for Junior Caminero

Tampa Bay Rays infield prospect Junior Caminero (quadriceps), who is on the seven-day injured list at Triple-A Durham, took a full session of live batting practice and also took ground balls at third base on Tuesday. He's eligible to come off the injured list now and is closing in on a return to action if he doesn't have any setbacks. The 20-year-old is the team's top prospect and the No. 4 overall prospect in all of baseball, per MLB Pipeline, but the Rays are known to slow-play their youngsters. That might be especially true for Caminero now that he's coming off an early season injury. But even then, the Dominican should play for the Ray sooner than later in 2024 after making his big-league debut last year. His high prospect pedigree makes him stash-worthy in deep-mixed and AL-only leagues.

  • Junior Caminero Out One Week With Quad Strain

    Headshot for Junior Caminero

The Tampa Bay Rays placed third baseman Junior Caminero (quadriceps) on the 7-day injured list at Triple-A Durham on Monday. A left quad strain is the diagnosis after an MRI for Caminero, who was forced from Sunday's Triple-A game with the injury but could return to action in the minor leagues as soon as he's first eligible next week. This shouldn't disrupt the 20-year-old No. 4 prospect's, per MLB Pipeline, journey to the majors very much, as he's still projected to make his 2024 debut during the early stages of the campaign. Although the setback makes him a bit more difficult to stash in redraft leagues, Caminero is slashing .333/.429/.583 with one home run, two RBI, and one stolen base across 14 plate appearances in the minors so far this year and carries loads of fantasy upside as a hitter.

  • Junior Caminero Having MRI On Monday

    Headshot for Junior Caminero

Tampa Bay Rays manager Kevin Cash said that infield prospect Junior Caminero (quadriceps), the team's top prospect who left Sunday's Triple-A Durham game with a left-quadriceps injury, is having an MRI exam on Monday. Caminero went 2-for-3 with a home run and two runs scored but then had to be helped off the field after pulling up lame while running to first base. The Rays and fantasy managers should have a better idea of the 20-year-old's timetable for a return once his MRI results comes back. Caminero reached the Double-A level at just 19 years old and made his MLB debut late last season. The Rays like to slow play their prospects, but if he can bounce back from this injury quickly, Caminero figures to resurface in the big leagues in 2024 sooner than later.

  • Junior Caminero Exits Early On Sunday

    Headshot for Junior Caminero

Tampa Bay Rays infielder Junior Caminero (leg) was forced to exit early during Sunday's game. The star prospect injured his leg while running down the line on a comebacker. Caminero was on the ground for a few minutes before being assisted off the field by the training staff. Caminero is currently playing with Triple-A Durham, but was expected to make an impact on the Rays roster soon. He's currently the Rays top prospect and one of the better prospects in all of baseball. Hopefully it's a minor issue, but the organization should give more information soon.

  • Offseason In Review: Tampa Bay Rays

    Headshot for Jason Adam

The Rays typically make at least one significant trade that sends out a veteran player to reduce spending and acquire controllable talent. Tampa Bay did that again in a major deal with the Dodgers, but it was otherwise a relatively quiet winter at the Trop. Major League Signings RHP Phil Maton: One year, $6.5MM (including buyout…

  • Rays Option Junior Caminero

    Headshot for Junior Caminero

The Rays optioned top infield prospect Junior Caminero to Triple-A Durham among their camp cuts this afternoon, writes Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times. That takes him out of the mix for an Opening Day roster spot. Caminero always seemed like a long shot to secure a season-opening big league job. The Rays promoted…

  • Junior Caminero Optioned To Minors

    Headshot for Junior Caminero

Tampa Bay Rays infielder Junior Caminero has been optioned to minor league camp on Monday. This isn't shocking considering it was reported weeks ago that Caminero was unlikely to make the Opening Day roster. The 20-year-old is expected to start his 2024 campaign in Triple-A. There is a chance that Caminero joins the big league club at some point during the season. In nine spring games, Caminero went 7-for-26 (.269) with a HR and four RBI during camp. It shouldn't be long before the top prospect is ready for the big league level.

  • Junior Caminero Having A Quiet Spring

    Headshot for Junior Caminero

Tampa Bay Rays top prospect Junior Caminero isn't expected to make the Rays' Opening Day roster, nor is he pounding his way into it this spring. The 20-year-old went 1-for-3 in a 7-4 Grapefruit League loss to the Red Sox on Tuesday and is now 4-for-16 (.250) in the spring, including one home run. MLB's fourth overall prospect had a great minor league season last year but also skipped over Triple-A before making his big league debut. He'll begin the season at Triple-A, but has big power and can hit to all fields so expect to see him in Tampa at some point again in 2024. While with the big league club in 2023, he played in seven games at three different infield positions, although it seems he profiles best at third base. RotoBaller ranks the youngster at 217 overall, ahead of his NFBC ADP of 237.

  • Rays Anticipate Jose Caballero, Rene Pinto Taking Starting Roles

    Headshot for Jose Caballero

Rays president of baseball operations Erik Neander spoke with reporters yesterday at the opening of the team’s Spring Training camp. He addressed a pair of positions of relative uncertainty as the season approaches: shortstop and catcher. At the former, Neander suggested the team anticipates José Caballero opening the year as the starter (link via Marc Topkin…

  • Junior Caminero Not Expected To Make Opening Day Roster

    Headshot for Junior Caminero

Tampa Bay Rays rookie infielder Junior Caminero isn't expected to make the team's Opening Day roster out of spring training. Caminero made his major-league debut in 2023 as a September call-up and went 8-for-34 (.235) with a home run and seven RBI in just seven games played. This news makes sense, considering the fact that the 20-year-old prospect skipped Triple-A altogether when he was recalled last season. Still, the Dominican infielder is plenty intriguing despite Tampa's reputation for slow-playing their prospects after he hit a combined .324/.384/.591 with a .976 OPS, 31 home runs, 94 RBI, five steals and 85 runs scored in 117 games with High-A Bowling Green and Double-A Montgomery last year. Given how hard Caminero hits the ball to all fields, he should resurface at some point with the Rays in 2024 and could eventually carve out everyday playing time.
