  • David Hamilton Returns For Red Sox

    Headshot for David Hamilton

Boston Red Sox infielder David Hamilton (side) is back in the starting lineup for the Red Sox on Wednesday against the division-rival Toronto Blue Jays, playing shortstop and batting second against Blue Jays right-hander Kevin Gausman. Hamilton injured his left side in Monday's series opener in Canada and was forced to start Tuesday's game on the bench, but he's back in there on Wednesday for fantasy managers. The 26-year-old picked up a stolen base and a run scored as a pinch-hitter in Wednesday's game, signaling his injury wasn't very serious. The former eighth-round pick of the Milwaukee Brewers in 2019 out of Texas didn't look good in his first 14 MLB games in 2023 but has been a different hitter this year, slashing .284/.336/.440 with four homers, 12 RBI and 19 steals in just 49 games. At the very least, Hamilton has become a waiver-wire pickup in fantasy leagues for his speed alone.

  • David Hamilton Not Playing On Tuesday

    Headshot for David Hamilton

Boston Red Sox infielder David Hamilton (side) is not in the team's starting lineup on Tuesday versus the hosting Toronto Blue Jays. Hamilton left Monday's series opener in Canada early with left-side discomfort and will sit out for at least one game. For now, fantasy managers in deeper leagues should consider him day-to-day. Ceddanne Rafaela is making the start at shortstop and is batting ninth, while Enmanuel Valdez is at the keystone and in the two-hole against Blue Jays right-hander Chris Bassitt. With an off day coming on Thursday, there's a chance Hamilton is held out again on Wednesday. Due to injuries to Trevor Story and Vaughn Grissom, Hamilton has gotten a lot of run in the middle infield in Boston and has been a nice surprise for those in deeper fantasy leagues with a .284 average (40-for-141) with a career-high 18 steals in 48 games in his second year in the majors.

  • David Hamilton Exits With Side Discomfort

    Headshot for David Hamilton

Boston Red Sox shortstop David Hamilton (side) exited Monday's game against the division-rival Toronto Blue Jays with left side discomfort. After grabbing at his side in Boston's dugout and going 0-for-2 on Monday, Hamilton left the contest and was replaced by Enmanuel Valdez in the fourth inning. It's tough break for the speedy 26-year-old infielder, who's stolen a whopping 18 bases across just 48 outings while batting a strong .284 (40-for-141) with four home runs, 12 RBI, and 25 runs scored for the Red Sox this season. Look for the team to offer another update on his status sometime following Monday's matchup, as fantasy managers hope Hamilton isn't dealing with any kind of strain. Romy Gonzalez would see more playing time at shortstop for any additional action Hamilton may need to miss, but he lacks very much fantasy appeal.

  • David Hamilton Swipes Four Bags On Sunday

    Headshot for David Hamilton

Boston Red Sox shortstop David Hamilton was off and running against the New York Yankees on Sunday Night Baseball, notching four steals in a 9-3 win. Hamilton went 2-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI to round out a very solid night. The four swipes give Hamilton 18 on the season and nine since June 7, an average of more than one per game. Obviously that pace won't continue, but if he can stay anywhere close to it he will be a very valuable fantasy player. He should be rostered in any league where stolen bases matter at this point.

  • David Hamilton Out Of Lineup Saturday

    Headshot for David Hamilton

Boston Red Sox shortstop David Hamilton will be on the bench Saturday night. Hamilton is hitting .281 with four home runs, 14 RBI, 22 runs scored, and 14 stolen bases. Rookie Ceddanne Rafaela will get the start instead and hit in the ninth spot. Hamilton has had a solid June, hitting .283 with two homers, five RBI, and five stolen bases in 47 plate appearances. This is likely a day off for the left-handed hitting Hamilton as the Red Sox face lefty Carlos Rodon and the New York Yankees on Saturday night. Look for the speedy shortstop to be back in action Sunday afternoon in the series finale.

  • David Hamilton With Fourth Straight Two-Hit Game

    Headshot for David Hamilton

Boston Red Sox shortstop David Hamilton went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run in Wednesday's 8-6 win over the Phillies, logging his fourth straight two-hit game and fifth in his last six. During the six-game stretch, Hamilton is 10-for-26 (.385) with three doubles, two home runs, three RBI, five runs scored, and four stolen bases. On the season the 26-year-old has a .296-4-10-21-13 line with a .358 wOBA and 128 wRC+. He's been an under-the-radar source of steals, is eligible at 2B/SS in Yahoo leagues for managers looking for some help, and is available in over 60% of Yahoo leagues.

  • Red Sox Going With Platoons At Shortstop, Second Base

    Headshot for Romy Gonzalez

The Boston Red Sox plan to platoon at both shortstop and second base after the serious injury to shortstop Trevor Story (shoulder) last Friday. Romy Gonzalez and David Hamilton will mostly split time at shortstop, with Pablo Reyes and Enmanuel Valdez splitting time at second. Outfielder Ceddanne Rafaela will also see time up the middle in Beantown. Vaughn Grissom (groin, hamstring) will mostly work at the keystone but will also get reps at shortstop. Gonzalez was called up from Triple-A Worcester on Monday after slashing .321/.375/.821 with three homers and 10 RBI in 32 plate appearances on the farm. Grissom, who is expected to start a rehab assignment this weekend, should eventually see regular playing time for the BoSox at the keystone when he's healthy and is by far the most attractive fantasy player of all these middle-infield names.

  • David Hamilton Goes Yard

    Headshot for David Hamilton

Upon his promotion on Sunday, Boston Red Sox shortstop prospect David Hamilton went 2-for-4 with a walk, two RBI and a solo home run. The speedy Hamilton was promoted and drew the start at shortstop with the news that shortstop Trevor Story (shoulder) will be sidelined indefinitely. Hamilton struggled in his first taste of the big leagues in 2023 with six hits in 37 at-bats and one homer to go along with a pair of stolen bases. Despite his struggles last season, he is a hard to catch on the basepaths with 179 stolen bases from 2021-2023. He also has some pop in his bat with double-digit homers in the past two seasons, including 17 last year in Triple-A. Opportunity will be key for Hamilton, but his speed makes him very intriguing and if he is able to add 10 or more homers, that is icing on the cake. Managers in deeper leagues should consider Hamilton as he can help with speed right away and could be a valuable asset in deeper leagues as the season goes on.

  • Trevor Story Lands On The IL With A Left Shoulder Dislocation

    Headshot for David Hamilton

Boston Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story (shoulder) was placed on the 10-day injured list with a left shoulder dislocation. Story will be re-evaluated on Monday to determine if there's any labrum damage. The Red Sox called up infielder David Hamilton from Triple-A Worcester in a corresponding move. Story exited Friday's game early with a shoulder injury. He underwent an MRI on Saturday, which revealed a left shoulder dislocation. The 31-year-old was off to a rocky start this season, slashing .226/.294/.323 with four RBI and a run scored over eight games. According to Red Sox Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow, it's too early to know if Story will need surgery or when he will return. Hamilton will fill in at shortstop for the Red Sox and should see an uptick in at-bats while Story is sidelined. Hamilton is a speculative add in most leagues, but fantasy managers searching for speed can look to add the 26-year-old after he stole 57 bases in Triple-A in 2023.
