Masataka Yoshida Has Big Game To Help Japan Advance
Boston Red Sox outfielder Masataka Yoshida played a huge part in Team Japan's come-from-behind 6-5 victory over Team Mexico in the World Baseball Classic semifinal on Monday evening. Yoshida went 3-for-4 with a game-tying, three-run home run, a run scored and a walk to help Japan advance to the championship game on Tuesday against Team USA. The 29-year-old will play in one more game for his country in the WBC before rejoining the Red Sox for his first major-league season after signing a five-year, $90 million deal. Yoshida is unlikely to be as good as he was in Nippon Professional Baseball, but he does make a lot of contact and rarely strikes out, so he could have a solid batting average floor. He will be an everyday player in Boston, but he doesn't have a strong glove and lacks a ton of power upside.

Masataka Yoshida Unlikely To Hit Leadoff
Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora threw cold water on Sunday on the idea of outfielder Masataka Yoshida hitting leadoff in his first MLB season. Instead, he's likely to hit near the middle of the batting order to open up the 2023 campaign. The 29-year-old was able to get on base frequently while playing in Japan, but Cora plans to have him hitting in the middle of the lineup most days. It's good news for Yoshida's fantasy value, as he should have more opportunities to drive in runs hitting in the heart of Boston's order. He also is very good at making contact and limiting his strikeouts, but he could face an adjustment to harder throwers in the States. Fantasy managers should consider him a decent target for OBP and batting average, and RotoBaller considers him as a borderline top-40 fantasy outfielder.

Boston To Split Up Rafael Devers, Masataka Yoshida In Lineup
Boston Red Sox skipper Alex Cora said that the team is hoping to split up third baseman Rafael Devers and new outfielder Masataka Yoshida in this year's batting lineup, so Devers isn't expected to hit second. The left-handed-hitting Yoshida is expected to serve as Boston's primary leadoff guy in 2023, which means Devers will likely hit in the No. 3 spot to avoid having left-handers back-to-back at the top of the order. Devers, one of the best hitters in all of baseball, signed an 11-year, $331 million contract extension this offseason to remain in Beantown for the long term. The 26-year-old has been an All-Star each of the last two seasons and hit .287/.355/.530 with 65 home runs, 201 RBI, 185 runs scored and eight stolen bases in the last two years. He's ranked 20th overall in RotoBaller's 2023 fantasy baseball rankings.
