  • Latest On A's Rotation

The A’s entered camp with a host of pitchers competing for what appeared to be two rotation spots. Another opened during Spring Training, as righty Paul Blackburn tore a fingernail and will start the year on the injured list. That left Drew Rucinski and Shintaro Fujinami as the apparent top two. For different reasons, there are questions about…

  • Shintaro Fujinami To Receive Extra Rest Between Regular Season Starts

The Oakland Athletics plan to slot starting pitcher Shintaro Fujinami into the rotation every sixth or even seventh day to mirror his previous workload in Japan, per SF Chronicles' Matt Kawahara. The 28-year-old has shown both strikeout upside and command issues this spring, compiling a 4.26 ERA with a 1.58 WHIP and 17 strikeouts in 12 2/3 innings pitched. Fantasy managers are clearly not ready to trust him, as his current average draft position is about 555.

  • AL West Notes: A's, Ragans, Taveras

The Athletics could deploy a six-man rotation this year, with general manager David Forst discussing the situation with Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle. “We've mapped it out a lot of different ways,” Forst said. "Things that look like a six-man (rotation) or an occasional bullpen day or an occasional spot starter. There are…

  • Shintaro Fujinami Makes Spring Debut Tuesday

Oakland Athletics starting pitcher Shintaro Fujinami looked impressive in his start in Tuesday's 11-5 loss to the Angels. Fujinami pitched two scoreless innings, striking out three and showcasing a darting split-finger fastball and 98-MPH four-seam fastball. However, he did walk three, which was one of his issues when pitching in Japan. While the 28-year-old presents an intriguing fantasy option given his hype in Japan, fantasy managers will likely want to see more from him before placing trust.

  • Shintaro Fujinami Impresses At A's Camp

Oakland Athletics right-hander Shintaro Fujinami was impressive in his first side session at spring training on Thursday. The 28-year-old Japanese sensation drew rave reviews and threw all six of his pitches -- four-seam fastball, two-seam fastball, cutter, slider, splitter and curveball -- during a bullpen session of around 40 pitches. "The big splitter was nasty," catcher Shea Langeliers said. "It's going to take some catching to get used to that one. It's really good. It dives down." Fujinami's fastball was topping out at 97 mph with movement. The A's will use the next several weeks as a barometer for what type of workload Fujinami might be able to handle during the season. In Japan, he pitched every sixth day, but it remains to be seen if the A's will roll with a six-man rotation in 2023. There's a lot to like about him, but he's had his share of control issues in the past.

  • A's Agree With Shintaro Fujinami

The Oakland Athletics agreed with Japanese right-hander Shintaro Fujinami on a one-year deal, pending a physical, on Wednesday, according to a source. The 28-year-old was posted by the Hanshin Tigers of Nippon Professional Baseball in Japan last month and is expected to join Oakland's starting rotation in 2023. The 28-year-old had a career-best 1.118 WHIP in 107 1/3 innings pitched last year in his 10th year with the Tigers. Fujinami is 6-foot-6 and has a fastball that sits in the upper-90s. Along with his 1.118 WHIP last season, he had a 3.38 ERA and 23.6% strikeout rate in Japan. Fujinami displayed better command in 2022, but it has been an issue for him before. Expect him to have an up-and-down first year in the big leagues, but he will be heading to a nice ballpark for pitchers.

  • Athletics, Shintaro Fujinami Agree To One-Year Deal

The Athletics have agreed to a one-year contract with right-hander Shintaro Fujinami, reports ESPN’s Jeff Passan (Twitter link). The hard-throwing 28-year-old was posted by the Hanshin Tigers of Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball back on Dec. 1. His agreement is pending a physical, and the A’s expect to use him out of the rotation, Passan adds.…
